Birth rate plunge triggers health minister’s urgent action plan
daveAustin replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Indeed, but politicians are always thinking about revenue. -
Weighing passengers to become standard for Bangkok Airways
daveAustin replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
That's fine too as long as you pay for it! Not my fault if you're 10 foot tall. If I get charged extra for having one more kilogram in my luggage, while the guy behind me three times my weight doesn't gets off scot free, then something is broke. -

Living Without Passport?
daveAustin replied to MakichGak's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
I wouldn’t nowadays either. Have renewed passport many moons ago here, but that was direct with CM consulate and all went smoothly. Last time I timed it with trip home, which I’ll do again. Op, if for real, go back to your embassy and ‘demand’ a temporary travel doc… cannot understand why they did not suggest this. Avoid going to ground, that will create a bigger issue. -

Probably not and unlikely at hotel. One can fly with local driving license though. -
Thailand’s government proposes swift minimum wage increase to 400 baht
daveAustin replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Very noble, I’m sure, but as a minister of finance would surely be able to work out, raising minimum wages does not really help those paid the least for the blatantly OBVIOUS reason already stated. It just takes more money out of everyone’s pockets. Finance people will say it doesn’t necessarily drive inflation but that’s prattle. It will always have a knock on effect, while employers will start looking at efficiency and offloading superfluous staff. Gotta be done steadily and incrementally, not in massive election-fulfilling chunks. -
You don’t know what his age is or factoring the status of the girl/parents is. Yours smacks of a typical know-all (know nothing) visitor with little knowledge outside the bar scene. Cringeworthy references to ‘cheap Charlie’ gives you away somewhat. While Thai males still show funds (and indeed more than this in some cases), it’ll typically be for the daughter of someone with high standing, not some average family in the middle of nowhere. There’s one born every minute.

Great place, & the mountains. Those that poo-poo it are typically devoid of culture Pattaya types. I’m glad they stay away. ???? ^^^ Nov-Feb is best, and no you don’t need a mask then.

Indeed. Many women harp on about inequality but have no idea how hard it can be being a bloke. The expectation… being the breadwinner, providing for family, berated by woman for not having as much as her friends, getting destroyed by the courts when she wants a change etc etc. Harder for a guy to seek help and they are more likely to bottle it up. The addition of social media and that toxic environment for the young uns is another biggie. Especially horrible to hear about kids doing themselves in. People will make light of it and carry on with their day as it means nothing to them. Whatever.

Have I Missed the Boat ?
daveAustin replied to lolex's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
Common misconception those amounts need to be ‘maintained’ all year. Whilst monies should be seasoned at or above 400/800 for this or that extension (marriage/retirement, for example), one is then free to draw down (as far as 400k on retirement) in the interim. To not do so might suggest one is getting monies elsewhere, such as working on the sly. Any immigration office telling folks that money HAS to be there all year is wrong. Op, you haven’t missed the boat as you’re still alive. Get off the fence and get over here. You can easily get a visa and subsequent extensions. Don’t worry about dying, we’ll all do that. Come and be with your daughter, and avoid the notion of needing to leave large sums. Giving her your time and a good start is more important so she has the tools to make her own way as most of us did. -
Thaksin's Family Refutes Fake News; Misleading Post Sparks Outrage
daveAustin replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
What crimes are those? Could you list them, please, and not the tired old tat spouted on here or by the army? Genuinely interested. -
Distraught Foreigner In Multi-Vehicle Crash In Chonburi
daveAustin replied to webfact's topic in Pattaya News
Clearly got issues, who hasn’t and who cares if others get hurt. There’s already enough farang nutters here. Fine heavily, deport and ban. Just don’t take it out on the rest of us that behave.- 97 replies

“86% of Thai police stations failed transparency test”
daveAustin replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Of course, but surprised not 100%. When an organisation operates as the RTP does, there can be only one result... where ordinary officers pay large sums to get in, have to buy all their own kit, and can only make their career pay through 'other' means. The whole system is wrong and massively open to corruption. -
This is Thailand though, innit, where 20 is underage. You can buy a pint and go clubbing in UK at 18. Always could.

I won't wear a helmet, makes me look stupid
daveAustin replied to scubascuba3's topic in Motorcycles in Thailand
Gawd, here’s another one. They’ve all been allowed out today! Been riding, and driving, in Thailand for 25 years. Does that mean I only have a partially diminished IQ, or perhaps having the audacity to ride automatically consigns me to ‘dummy’ status? I used to cycle on the roads a lot, too, you know. Guess that makes me a double-thickie, eh!
