  1. . Either you don't comprehend my post, or you are deflecting..... It matters not a whit whether or not their "objections" are "moot" or valid. What matters is the economy is going to crash due to various reasons, and not taking a job that is critical to the economy, for any reason, is going to contribute to that crash.
  2. . Conversations with employers, big and small. over many weeks in various parts of the country while driving from Florida to Los Angeles. The aforementioned senior manager at Smith's Supermarket stated quite clearly that it was a primary reason in Bountiful, Utah, as well as other areas of Utah, for turning down jobs. Smith's is owned by Kroger. Kroger is on the edge of going from a Fortune 500 company, to a Fortune 100 company. Not only are they offering $18.50/hour, but also things that up until now, they never would have considered: discounted health care, reimbursement of college tuition, and the option of getting paid daily. Yep, leave your shift with your pay. Never been done in the USA except for day labor ditch diggers. And, he said, he has another conundrum: supply chain problems leading to empty shelves, and yet, no new hires to stock what they actually do get in. He was not optimistic. I m not saying this is happening in every city, it's not. But my route westward was, with the exception of New Mexico, pretty conservative so that was who I was exposed to and spoke with. My conversations probably added 2-3 days to my trip, but I gathered a lot of info and insight. A side note: I tried to stay in a hotel I like, in Kerrville, Texas. Was told on the phone, no rooms available. I once stayed there for two months and know that manager, too. I stopped in. She said they actually had a hundred empty rooms. So, I asked why can't I have one? Two reasons: no housekeepers to work, and secondly, the state requires certain things done to the rooms before they can be used again and a large group of hunters had all left the same day (not an unusual event). She said the state's requirements are so damaging that they likely won't make it through spring. That hotel has been there for decades.
  3. . Wanna bet.....? That was then, this is now. What Klaus 'Anal' Schwab calls, the New Normal.
  4. . Utah is a mainly conservative state. $18.50/hour now offered for cashiers, grocery stockers, janitors, etc. Few takers as, once hired, they will be required to take a vaxx they don't want. Pro-vax or anti-vax aside, it is an issue that absolutely affects the entire society, and economy. The question is: is it the law of unintended consequences, or intended consequences?
  5. . Uhm, depends on why they wanted to be in bed by ten.....
  6. . Why would the Thai government be embarrassed.....? It was the US who ordered millions in medical grade equipment from a company called Paddy the Room.
  7. . You would think that with the hundreds of different plans these brainiacs come up with....... At least one of them would not suck.
  8. . Yes, non-essentials are on sale..... Food, shelter, etc, is not. Sleight of hand.
  9. . No, I think when I got back to the States they were in the $4 range. But, when I left the States in December of last year, however, yes, they were $2.99. The thick applewood-smoked bacon I liked that went with the eggs was $7 a pack last December, and Publix regularly had buy-one-get-one sales. That pack, this month, is $13. And I don't see any specials on those. The specials I see are numerous, but are on non-essentials: TVs, etc.....
  10. . That's odd. I'm always a bit suspicious of people bashing USA or when they claim we are so lucky to live here. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Great-Value-Large-White-Eggs-18-Count/172844767?athbdg=L1200 . Allow me to allay your unwarranted suspicions from which you derived your false accusation...... Note that in my post, I used the word 'box' not 'carton.' https://www.walmart.com/ip/Great-Value-Large-White-Eggs-60-Count/193637719 He11, they've gone up since I left there on the 15th...... And it's not bashing, it's the listing of factual information.
  11. . When I was in SLC for a few days, I ran into the senior manager of a big Smith's Supermarket. Lived there for a few years and know this guy well. $18.50 for a cashier, or any other job in the store......still can't find people. I asked why. At first he said it was because: hours were part-time to stay within government's rules about avoiding paying health insurance (over 23 hours, employer must pay). Then he mentioned that apartments in SLC now started at $1300/month, way up from last year. All your pay goes just to rent. I said, yeah, but people still have to work. Some are living with others or family. After looking at me for a moment, he leaned in and said, "But if the people are no longer around, then what?" This guy is anything but a conspiracy theorist. He would not comment further other than to add, "The landscape of the US has changed dramatically and is going to continue to change." Then he moved on to more pleasant topics and before we parted ways. He had earlier hinted that the Kroger home office had told him months ago that it was going to become difficult to find help in the near future. I asked how they knew that, he wouldn't give me a straight answer. Take from those cryptic comments what you will. It was a spooky conversation. I did notice in my travels that really small towns did not have employee shortages, especially those in the deep south; Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi.
  12. . Have not heard anything to the contrary. But I got a phone call in my ASQ room last night... You want out tomorrow? Uh, I have one more day left. You can go tomorrow, day early. Why? How can I leave early? Yes or no. You want? So I got out in 9 days. Though I actually very much enjoyed my stay. Very relaxing. Would not have minds 14 days..... Wanna bet? Kovid Keyboard Kombatants will show up shortly telling you how selfish you are....
  13. . Dreamer, you stupid little dreamerSo now you put your head in your hands, oh no!Wow!
  14. . Yep, driving from Florida to Salt Lake City, then on to Los Angeles, virtually every business had Help Wanted signs posted. Small businesses, nationwide chains. Can't even get inside most restaurants anymore because no wait staff; drive-thru only. PetSmart, Kohls, Home Depot, Safeway, Kroger, all need help. Smith's supermarket in SLC offered $18.50 for cashiers, deli, produce. Can't fill the positions, and can't fill the shelves. The media says it is because people want to stay on unemployment. That is pure BS. There is another reason, one that defies belief, and is best not spoken of out loud, but boils down to this: the people to fill the vacancies no longer exist.
  15. . Left LOS in May for my home state of Florida, planning on building a house over the summer, to use as a home base. Pre-"covid", the price of a 2x4 x8 was $1.51. Six months ago it was $7.50. I had land and was ready to build, but after examining the situation, well, I'm smarter than that. Supply chain is broken. Flying in, I saw freighter after freighter in the water off LAX, and more at anchor off Singapore. The house I sold for $78k in August of 2020, resold last month for $122K to a New Yorker. I sold my acre of land for three times what I paid for it in May of 2020. I sold my 1995 Ford F150 for $16,700. To be fair, it only had 95,000 miles on it. But used car prices have inflated 24.1% this year alone. Biden changes his depends, and thinks he has averted a disaster. By spring, it will all come crashing down. And like dominos, each country will get knocked down in succession. Stock up.
  16. . It stinks, but count your blessings..... I left the States 10 days ago. Had been back there for 4 months. Prices have gone crazy. Box of eggs at Walmart was $2.99. Now $7.49. Many of the aisles are half empty. Beef was sporadic and sparse and has gone up at least 20% in this year. It's only going to get worse..... Worldwide.
  17. . I want to enclose the area immediately around my bungalow with a combination wall and fence. A rectangle 100' x 60'. Block on the lower section, and a painted cement board fence running horizontally on top of it. Lower section about 3-4 feet, upper section up to about 5 feet high. Block will sit on a small, poured footer, with rebar anchors.. I could do it myself but have too many other projects. I live rural, but should be able to find someone halfway qualified that with a bit of supervision, who can perform. About how much should I expect to pay someone for such a project? Better to go by the day than the project? Has covid changed pricing?
  18. . Who in their right mind would buy medical supplies from a company called Paddy the Room?
  19. . No, those just wash up on my tiny, otherwise pristine and isolated beach about once a month..... Really p1$$e$ me off.

  22. . Potential travelers are confused. Most businesses have a sign on their door that has two sides...... Thailand's sign only has one side, and it says: Open/Closed.
  23. . On the import documents, Import Agent is listed as Ben Dover..... ☝️
