Of course you can have a fixed deposit account with 800k. What you were doing (moving funds from FD to checking account "the following day", that was what Immigration did not accept. Indeed, in your case you should simply have a "normal savings account" and make sure it doesn't drop below the required 800k/400k depending on the months.

Not that people transferring and spending here 1.8k USD each month are poor... unless one wants to transfer back the unused money each month, oh what fun.

The new large Muji shop at Airport Plaza does that, there is a counter inside where they do both printing from your picture and embroidering. Caveat: the moment you (or your company) cancel the WP, your non-imm B becomes automatically void, so it is important to do all in the same day, no problem in my case. This statistics doesn't tell the real story. Direct flights arrivals, by passport. But certainly many, if not most, of the foreign arrivals are tourists coming with domestic flights having first stayed in other places such as Bangkok or Phuket, and thus not counted here. Also, the dominant component of the visitors to CM are Thai tourists, mainly Bangkokians, who often come by car and again are not counted. For a hotel or a restaurant it doesn't matter a fig whether the person paying the bill is national or international, so this statistics doesn't measure the real pulse of the tourist industry in CM. It is obvious to anyone living here that the city is flooded with tourists. The roads are choked with Bangkok-plated cars and with rental scooters. More than enough really! If some business owners cry that they don't have enough customers, their problem is not the tourist numbers but the competition. Coffee shops and elephant trousers stands grow like mushrooms.

There are already plenty of direct flights from China including Shanghai, I doubt the "yuan" will choose to fly on a Thai carrier especially one of bad customer service like AirAsia. In fact, some chinese airline flights are being scrapped due to low occupancy. I think the TH AirAsia move is more aimed at the Thais looking to visit China, perhaps in the hope of a visa-free policy.
