  1. A question for you Peter regarding the PM you sent me:

Where you say (or apply in-country for an extension) I beg to differ. I have had many Non-immigrant O visas based on retirement in the past. Under the visa stamp it said clearly in English "extension not allowed". I always understood that to mean that you could not get an extension to the 90 day stay.

Royal Thai Consulate General in Los Angeles. At which Embassy did you apply for your STV?

Yes I only found 1 so far.

This is great to know. Lucky you ???? I did the same but the Royal Thai Consulate General in Los Angeles refused it because they want a receipt from the hotel. I am very puzzled why the Agoda booking confirmation + my bank statement showing that the money had been moved to Agoda + the hotel letter confirming my stay were not enough.

Same. Thanks very much for sharing your experience, this is really good to know that Agoda worked for you.

The Embassy I dealt with was in Beijing and it was in Mid -October

  3. I booked and paid for a hotel in Pattaya for 75 days (90 - 15) on Agoda when applying for my STV visa. I submitted that booking to the Embassy and they accepted it when I applied for my STV. As soon as I landed in Suvarnaphumbi, my first task was to cancel the booking and get a refund which went through with no problems.

I have a condo in Bangkok and tried to use it as a residence for after I left quarantine but the Embassy insisted on me submitting my landlord's Tax ID number. My landlord refused to provide it and I don't blame him one bit. That is why I chose the Agoda route.

Question to the OP; which embassy are you dealing with?

Note: there are not many hotels listed on Agoda that will accept a booking over 30 days duration.

I'm interested to know if the rules are the same as when you make the initial STV application in your home country.

    Will I have to:

Show that I've paid for an additional 3 months accommodation up front?

Show any further medical certificates or covid tests?

Show another 3 months of $100,000 medical insurance specifically mentioning covid?

Show another 3 months of 40,000 baht outpatient / 400,000 baht inpatient health insurance?

Show proof of funds to stay for another 3 months?

I wondering whether it's best to apply for an STV, or just get an SETV and apply for another visa when that runs out.

None of the above for me. They only wanted a current TM30 and 1900 baht. I did my extension in mid-January

Absolutely not if you are a mid class millionaire/slightly above the average farang these days. One of the cheapest, most hassle free option around the world to get a residency in my view. Wish I could afford it.

Residency? I guess it depends on how one would define residency. It is nothing more than a glorified tourist visa.

  6. I got an extension to my STV in mid-January. I have never filled out a TM 30 for the 27 years that I have lived in Pattaya. I had to pay a fine of 1600 baht. Filled out a TM 30 for myself and had to hand in two signed photo-copies of the TM 30 with my extension application.

An acquaintance just finished getting a 1 year extension on their Elite visa. Had to hand over 2 signed copies of their recent TM 30 with the application.

Both cases were at Jomtien Immigration.

McConnell, perhaps concerned about how history will remember him, finally says something I agree with:

'"If this election were overturned by mere allegations from the losing side, our democracy would enter a death spiral," said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who helped give Trump some of his biggest accomplishments.'

What democracy? America was founded as a republic.

I have had a K-Bank account for many years and have always had an ATM card that doubles as a Master Card Debit card. I have never asked for a credit card however, with the debit card you can charge anything, at any place that has a credit card machine. only difference is the money is direct debited from your account.

I have also  held an AMEX credit card for the last 20 years. Sorry but I can't recall the exact qualification process but also don't recall any stress in getting the card, complete with a subsidiary card for the Mrs.

Try and rent a car with a Debit card or make a claim to the bank if it is compromised.

I have eaten Thai street food with only three problems in 20 years.

The first time it made me sick was when a bus stopped at a food court and even though I knew better I chose a dish from an unheated display of dishes, food that had probably been sitting there for hours.  The only reason I chose it is because the soup seller wasn't at his booth.  Later that day I wished I had gone hungry.

Thai street food made me sick twice more when I ate som tam (papaya pok pok) because my wife got that for us.  The first time it had a crab in it, which is normal.  The next time no crab but I'm sure the mortar and pestle weren't cleaned between uses.  After that my wife made our som tam at home using clean equipment and we both enjoyed it many times sans crabs and sans multiple visits to the toilet.

The only other time Thai food has made me sick was from one of the supposed best Thai restaurants in Bangkok.  I'll never return to that restaurant.

For the last 15 years I have stuck with Thai street food and selected small Thai restaurants where I can see the food being cooked and I have never had a food poisoning problem of any kind.

Personally I think a lot of the problems farangs encounter is because they are such cleanliness freaks.  If they were a little less clean they would be exposed to more types of bacteria and build up defenses against them.  The healthiest children are those raised on farms where they are exposed to all sorts of dirt, animals, and animal excrement.

Like you, I have been eating Thai street food, restaurant food, fast food, all kinds and have had food poisoning 3 times in 30 years in Thailand. Once at the most expensive fish restaurant on walking street (fish), once at an American fast food chicken joint which shall go un-named (chicken burger) and once at one of the top of the line restaurants in Pattaya. (Shrimp) Note that I have never had a problem with Thai restaurants, street food, food courts. I reckon that on the whole Thai cooks and chefs are relatively clean and careful. I have lived in other countries where I would get the "trots every other day, but not Thailand.
