Are high end smartphones worth the money (to you)?
tomazbodner replied to impulse's topic in Mobile Devices and Apps
Xiaomi 14 (at least Ultra) has a "Battery protection" setting where you can cap charging to 80%. There's another one for optimizing battery or something like that, which learns when you pull phone off charging pad, and tops up from 80 to 100% just before you take it off. Admittedly, even without all this, my battery on previous phone lasted over 5 years (Huawei P30 Pro). -
Are high end smartphones worth the money (to you)?
tomazbodner replied to impulse's topic in Mobile Devices and Apps
Worth for me. I have some semi professional video and photo equipment, but it's big and heavy, hence I was looking for something not too far off, and got Xiaomi 14 Ultra. It fits in the pocket and has quite a good low light capability with 1" class sensor. Also the real aperture control makes a nice bokeh. On the flip side, dynamic range isn't stellar, images are very surgical, and while AI can recover some blurred details as well as Picasso... Seriously, on both, Oppo X7 Ultra does a far better job. So camera and solid build are my main reasons to paying premium. But another reason that got me to change was actually security update. While flipping through the settings I noticed my previous phone had last security update over 2 years old. With all the apps we're forced to use on phones, updates are very important. Premium phones generally come with 5 years of updates, so my current phones have last update in January 2025. I'm also using iPhone, alas 14 Pro Max, a heavy brick. But that's for work as I still don't trust Google enough to put anything sensitive on Android phone. Camera on iPhone is of reasonable quality, but a far cry from what Xiaomi produces. -
Thailand's New Digital Arrival Card Stirs Confusion Among Travellers
tomazbodner replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Singapore has a bunch of iPads at the writing desks before immigration where people used to fill in arrival cards by pens, but admittedly it was far faster to fill out paper card than going through a bunch of pages of form that looked much like a visa application. When completed I was asking staff there how to get proof I filled it out and was told to take a photo of confirmation page. At the immigration officer's station I could see my information just typed in appear on his screen. This was my first time there after COVID when I was unaware of this change. The plus side of it of course (had I known about it prior to the flight) would have been filling that form at home and saving myself time and trouble at arrival. In SG, that form needs to be filled out by every tourist, but unsure about Singaporeans (unlikely) or their permanent residents (also unlikely). -

Isn't that the job for US customs, or do you want to outsource it to foreigners? -
Something similar but way cheaper is CGM from Ottai. I'll put link below, but main thing is that it connects to your phone (no reader needed, but they have a watch for people who don't want to connect them to their phone), it reads every 5 minutes, has 30 minutes warm up time, lasts 14 days and costs below 1000 baht. A 1 piece sensor like Libra, just no yogurt cup assembly needed before installation. In their app, there's "average level" and from looking at what it showed in there vs test done in hospital, it was within 0.1 margin a few times now. Hence CGM, costing below 2000 baht/month for 2 sensors, could well give you what you're looking for, and on top of that, show you real-time glucose level (it's very close to blood check), has a little bubble that can show all the time on phone screen, compares with previous days, allows you to enter meals and exercise to make sense of how your body reacts to it, etc. Below is a kit of 2 sensors for 1 month. You'll just need an Android or Apple phone to install app from Playstore/Appstore. https://www.lazada.co.th/products/ottai-glucose-monitoring-set-2pcs-continuous-glucose-meter-no-finger-pricking-m8-cgm-monitoring-sensor-i5469004482-s23190036584.html

Why would TSMC bother with Donald's demands? Intel's foundry sucks. Samsung is marginally better but incapable of producing the volumes it needs. AMD, nVidia, Qualcomm, Apple, etc. rely 100% on semiconductors from TSMC. If he slams the tariffs on them, he's only killing American companies. I say - let him do it.

Diversity is important when you are innovating or designing products and services, as diverse opinions and ideas give you a wider customer base, since those diverse people can share what would work for them. Air traffic control is probably not an area where you put diversity in front of experience and competence, though. But I would argue that, even if this happened, it would probably not be the sole reason. Covid's global travel shutdowns also had a lot to do with competences lost. Pilots, mechanics, ATC,... these people were out of work for years, doing other stuff. Mistakes seen after they returned, and all the way to now, at least some of them, also attribute to something lost during that time, procedures forgotten, routine stuff sidelined. Not arguing, just saying that there would be other reasons for dip in aviation safety, and that pandemic shutdown play a part.
