  1. The reply was incorrect, there is duty payable. There is an exemption for Thais that are returning to Thailand. A friend of mine shipped his in his wife's name but still had to pay some duty on stuff that was obviously not hers. On the basis that most of the stuff will be second hand it is done on assessment relative to age. If something looks brand new you will pay duty and anything obviously old will be exempt. i know a few people that have done it and it has not been very much, I didn't have to pay anything. I used Asian Tigers for the shipping and found hem quite efficient.
  2. It is this perspective that detracts from rational debate on the issue. The situation is not unlike the "Gig economy" problems in other countries where there is a divided type of employment. In the last 10 years or so the minimum wage has pushed up the price of hotel accommodation quite substantially and to implement the proposed level would be a serious blow to the tourist industry. If Thailand wished to retain that sector of the economy the problem would need to be addressed from a different angle. The pandemic however highlighted the dangers of tourist dependency and this may well have been taken into account with Thailand looking to move in a different direction.
  3. Distorted perspective, hope it made you feel better.
  4. Bit of a stupid and irrelevant question. The monorail is not planned to go on Beach Road and is intended to supplement the HSR so not going to happen any time soon.
  5. They have been put in their place in the past. "BANGKOK: Thailand’s coup leader and prime minister-in-waiting, Gen Prayuth Chan-Ocha last night (August 22) called for the Immigration crackdown on “out-in” tourist visas to be rolled back." https://www.thephuketnews.com/coup-leader-calls-for-immigration-to-relax-‘out-in’-visa-clampdown-48007.php
  6. Do not worry, there is a solution in the pipeline, it is known as the E-visa platform.
  7. On the back of my marriage certificate there is a statement to the effect that the female party informs to use her own surname. There were reasons at the time which went away some years later and then after 10 years made the change. If someone was to read the back of the marriage certificate and then look at her ID card there is potentially a problem so always something to bear in mind.
  8. Garbage, people do what suits them best, but there has always been an elitist view with extensions. I did my first 6 years in Thailand on ME visas, just got a new one every year when I went back to the UK, all very easy. Only downside, I filled up my passport in 3 years. I got caught up in the passport fiasco of 2014 and was forced into getting an extension to remain in the country. In the 8 years since then I have had marriage extensions, retirement extensions and a few visas, the last in Aug this year.
  9. You are supposed to apply for an E-visa in the country where you are currently resident and the only 2 Asian countries on the E-visa platform are China and South Korea. As a UK citizen you would be able to obtain an E-Visa from the London embassy but IO may very well question how the visa was obtained if you try and re-enter across a neighbouring land border.
  10. That will cut down expat visa runs from Thailand.
  11. It looks like they did the visa and extension in one go, Oct to Jan is about 15 months. Friend of mine did visa exempt to Non O on marriage early Nov and was told to come back before visa expired to do extension.
  12. That is not true, I entered Thailand on the 26th Aug 2022 and my first 90 day report is due on 1st Feb 2023. There are circumstances when the clock can be reset.
  13. "it is only one of the precautions that can be taken to reduce the risk to yourself and others." If the statement was beyond your comprehension, not a lot to be said.
  14. I think there may be a bit of misunderstanding here. I did it online for a friend of mine just before the pandemic and the text is still the same. We both went but I was visa exempt, have you checked if you are eligible under the visa exemption scheme. There is an invitation arrangement but it does not apply to short term visas. Full details of the online process can be seen at the link and if you check the application process you will see where it asks for invitation there is "If any" in brackets. https://evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn/web/guest/trang-chu-ttdt
  15. You can acknowledge there has been a rise in deaths from covid at the hospital where my niece works, or you can choose to try and rubbish the information. Entirely up to you, but quite irrelevant.
  16. Irrelevant, if you die your dead. No one has ever said vaccination will prevent you dying, it is only one of the precautions that can be taken to reduce the risk to yourself and others. Prevention has always been better than cure.
  17. Yes it was, I went 5th Feb 2020 just as the pandemic started, when got off at PB the station was full of what looked like aliens in hazmat suits. Think it was about 950 each way then but up to 1100 each way now so not a great deal in it overall. Price may well rise again when Bang Sue gets going.
  18. I didn't post the whole email only the part that pointed out the requirements and referred to checking passports. The email in fact had nothing to do with "in branch business", if I hadn't updated my information by the date specified I would have lost the use of online banking, not the account. Other than for immigration, I haven't done any branch business since 2009. What they were concerned about was my address, it hadn't changed since 1999 and was still "Room 235 Apex Hotel", how times have changed.
  19. No there is not, if covid results in premature death, it has killed you. It is all about the strength of the immune system and one thing is certain, unlike vaccination, opinions do little to strengthen the immune system. My niece is a junior doctor at a hospital not that far from Korat and in recent weeks they has been a rise in cases where covid has attacked what were relatively healthy lungs and been fatal.
  20. You would be wrong to doubt. This is an extract from an email I received in 2014. "We understand our foreign customers are staying in Thailand for various reasons. Please see the details of required documents that fit your status. Please contact our branch to update your information before 27 June 2014. 1. For Customer with Work Permit, please bring these items: A) Your passport. (Branch staff will take care of making copies of certain page such as Visa page and immigration stamp page). B) A copy of your Work Permit 2. For Customer with no Work Permit but possessing a visa for longterm stay: You can bring your passport to branch but please make sure your visa is a type that allow for minimum stay of 9 months. 3. For Customer who is currently enrolled in academic institute and has no Work Permit. A) Your passport. B) A letter from your academic institute to certify your status as a student. C) A copy of your student ID card."
  21. I usually use AXA, very reasonable. A couple of years ago we had to claim about 13K baht for baggage issues and that was paid without question. Fortunately never had to claim for anything health related.
  22. I live out in the sticks near Chonburi city so nothing is easy. I have thrown away a few desktops and printers in the past after they have supposedly been repaired. I take a similar view, I will have a go if prepared to brick it. I still have the Acer and may get round to it one day, but spare time with brain in gear is not that readily available, always something a bit more urgent.
  23. Exactly. I had an Acer that was shutting down due to overheating. took the back off and couldn't get anywhere near the fan. Watched a couple of Youtube videos and decided against it. I have had phones apart and not scared of electronics but these days some of the plastic parts used are very flimsy and easily broken, not worth the hassle. I scrapped it in the end. Finding someone you can trust to do a good job is easier said than done, despite what some keyboard experts would make out.
  24. Oh that it could be that simple.
