  1. I'm not talking about the number of hurricanes, I'm talking about the intensity of them. And from the article you have just referenced: 'Savin Chand, a senior lecturer at the Federation University in Australia, while there may be fewer tropical cyclones in the future, it is likely they will be more intense'. Which is more or less what the BBC article said.
  2. Firstly the article did NOT say they they were becoming more frequent, but it does say they ARE becoming more intense and there are plenty of other references to that effect. Here's just one below. I'd would tend toward the science rather than an anonymous poster. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-42251921
  3. Ask Google AI about hurricanes and this is what you'll read: 'Yes, studies indicate that hurricanes are becoming stronger and more intense due to climate change. Warmer ocean temperatures and rising sea levels are contributing to these trends, leading to more powerful winds, heavier rainfall, and increased storm surges'. Just because you don't feel the effects of climate change where you live, it doesn't mean it isn't happening.
  4. I would guess that every country on the planet is feeling the cost of the Houthi's interference with international shipping. A jet fighter and a few Reapers is small beer by comparison. The sooner they are put out of action the better it well be for everyone.
  5. Really? Russia's only aircraft carrier, the Admiral Kuznetsov, hasn't put to sea this century! https://nationalinterest.org/blog/buzz/will-russias-admiral-kuznetsov-aircraft-carrier-ever-leave-drydock Mind you, this incident is somewhat less embarrassing than the Royal Navy's loss of an F35. Some nerd forgot to remove an engine intake cover during prefight checks.
  6. Oh but he does! Not mentioned in the article (how remiss of them) is his 'modest private pension'. As mentioned by me and others, he's a 'former banker'. UK banks are generally known to offer good pension packages to all their staff, so I wonder how 'modest this pension is. https://thai.news/news/thailand/christopher-lees-retirement-struggle-the-impact-of-frozen-uk-pensions-on-british-expats-in-thailand
  7. I agree with you. It does seem somewhat incredulous that a 'former banker' of all professions would not have been aware of the implications of moving to Thailand. I've always been under the impression that being 'something in banking', to coin a phrase, was a good safe haven when it comes to retirement. I'm in much the same situation as you are but I'm doing just fine here on my pensions, despite the cap on my state pension and I'm basically crap when it comes to money management.
  8. I recall from the announcement last year on this issue that a common family name, sharing the same address is acceptable. I'm the same situation as you and I've not heard from either of my 2 account holders.
  9. Why can't the instructor take a photo ? Because he/she should be concentrating on teaching the student(s), not faffing around with a camera. Apart from anything else, it's called 'presenting a good roll model'.
  10. There's been a holiday remember. Just give them a chance to catch up.
  11. Well post a screen shot, then those familiar with the area can make a judgment call.
  12. I do not agree that 'a very fragile industry' would be under threat. The ban only applies to trainees and their instructors and rightfully so as I have said. And if the rational were to be explained to them, they would understand. Dive centres could use a dedicated experienced diver/photographer to take the much wanted oh ah photographs and profit from it. (a method I've encountered in Turkey) But you're certainly right about the damage caused by boats. We had the same problem in Egypt where I worked as a dive guide and it is very difficult, almost impossible to police.
  13. This is a very sensible ruling. It's not the photo that endangers the coral, it's the trainee diver who has yet to master the all important skills of breath and buoyancy control. I've seen many a diver concentrating so much on getting the perfect shot that they loose touch with their orientation and drift into reef. Learn to dive first, then consider taking a camera with you.
  14. You're 'jumping the gun' a bit. It's only a proposal.
  15. This does not apply when moving from a 2 year licence to a 5 years. Only when renewing a full 5 year licence. Unlike a full licence, the 2 year one does not expire on ones birthday. Hassle! What hassle? Save your money and do it yourself. It's easy.
  16. Simple. Procreate the species in order to satisfy the demands of the selfish genes that lies within every living thing. (The Selfish Gene, Richard Dawkins) Human beings bucked the trend set by nature, by learning to talk, think and write and thus got themselves all screwed up.
  17. I have recently seen, for the first time in my life, The affect that a lighting strike has on a tree. It literally exploded, sending shards of timber in all directions. The path I was walking on was inches deep in debris. From that day on, I have never gone out for my daily walk if there is any sign of a thunder storm. My condolences to the family of Sommai.
  18. There doesn't need to be anything amiss with the braking system for it to fail. They simply need to overheat which Leads to: 'When brake discs overheat, the high temperature reduces the effectiveness of the friction material. This heat build-up can be transferred into the brake fluid, causing it to boil which then leads to spongy and ineffective brakes'. Go downhill in too high a gear and rely on the brakes, this will be the result. And I'm sure happens it often happens here.
  19. Ah yes. Jim Fixx. Every lazy couch potatoes excuse for being so inclined. 'Look what exercise for him'. Well let's expose the truth shall we. Fixx started running in 1967 at age 35. At that time, he weighed 240 pounds and smoked two packs of cigarettes per day. Ten years later, when his Complete Book of Running was published, he had taken off more than 70 pounds and had given up smoking. It has also been suggested that he had a genetic predisposition for heart problems. Not exactly a role model when it comes to looking after ones health. Sounds more like he was a train wreak just waiting to happen! https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11926483/
  20. The best investment I have made recently was a humble smart watch. At only 500 THB it the most useful item I have when it comes to getting my daily walk up to speed. I can now walk at 8 kph and keep up the pace for an hour at least. Not at all bad for 79 year old. I endeavour to do an hour's walk every day. Only intense rain or a thunder storm will stop me. That's when I jump on my elliptical trainer instead.
  21. The Houthis launched a number of very serious attacks against USN ships operating in the Red Sea area. This response (along with others) is called self defence IMO. No need to declare war. I've now read that Iran is disowning the Houthis, so US action seems to be having the desired affect.
  22. And yet: His employers might want to reflect on the due diligence they use when choosing their employees.
  23. Until recently, maybe 4 years ago or so, a comprehensive road death tally. was reported on a daily basis on this forum during these holiday periods. Those reports, in tabular form should the 'deaths on the day' as reported by the police and it also reported subsequent deaths as reported by hospitals. Those subsequent deaths were added to the totals as and when they were received by the compilers. So it was quite clear that they do not only report 'deaths at the scene'. Finding a link to those reports would be a mammoth task now and I'm not even going to bother trying. I'll leave it to Googles AI to do the heavy work. 'Thailand's road death statistics are collected from various sources and compiled by the Department of Disease Control of the Ministry of Public Health. Data is gathered from death certificates, Police Information Systems reporting traffic injuries, and central motor vehicle insurance registries. This integrated approach, supported by ThaiHealth and WHO in Thailand, aims to provide a comprehensive overview of road traffic deaths'.
  24. This is a complete myth. It's been reported many times over the years that deaths, on the way to, or reported from hospitals are added later as the arise. But newbees wouldn't be aware of that would they, so they just follow the herd.
