  1. Quaint and a bit unusual to the western mind I'll grant you, but why scary? Your suggestion that the spirits could 'break an ankle' indicates that you're subconsciously buying into their quaint beliefs. ????
  2. 200Kg! That's no lightweight and a difficult shape to handle as well. A house brick is heavy enough to kill if it catches you right.
  3. When someone posts up a banner headline inviting me to: 'See how useless your Thai bank is', I take umbrage as I know damn well they are not! My response was actually a watered down version of what I would like to have said. By the way I have read through this thread and come across very little evidence that it has been useful to anyone and it seems that I also garnered quite a lot of agreement for my view. So water, duck, back AFAIK,
  4. I know, but I will respond and that's my choice. It took all of 10 minutes to have my photo taken in my local Krungsri branch.
  5. Thanks but no thanks. I'll put up with the whining and moaning for free! ????
  6. Yellow shirts. The People's Alliance for Democracy. Yellow shirts
  7. It started as security measure to protect important people (choose your own interpretation of that) from criminal acts, particularly terrorism and assassinations. Now it's just become a habit that many think is a must do. no matter who they are.
  8. We never had to fly to Bangkok for the income letter from the British embassy. It was all done by mail. Granted it did cost 52 GBP as apposed to free service I now provide myself by preparing the paperwork to prove my income, so I'll concede you that point.
  9. Penicillin is a naturally occurring antibiotic discovered in 1928 by Alexander Fleming. And as far as I'm aware all antibiotics are naturally occurring. They will of course have been refined in a lab for medical use.
  10. If one is married here and uses the 400k in the bank method, one only needs 33.33k per month income to switch to a retirement extension using the combination method. So what's the problem? Surely nobody lives on less than 33k per month here.
  11. That's one good reason why you should get some life insurance on the lady in your life @chalawaan
  12. You neglected to mention the attitude of the customer!
  13. It' good news as a counterweight to all the gripping and moaning that we are so often subjected to on ANF. A very refreshing change and worthy of comment.
  14. Here's what ChatGPT has to say: 'Yes, lab-grown meat is real meat. It is generated by growing animal cells in a lab using various techniques, and it is made up of the same cells, proteins, and nutrients as conventionally raised meat. Although it is produced in a different way, it is still considered real meat'. So it seems to me that it is possibly healthier to eat than the 'real' stuff, giving the way many animals are raised and the junk that they're feed on, especially hormones and antibiotics. And it has to be kinder on the environment.
  15. Do you ever go and talk to migrant workers on this issue? Just asking.
  16. Yes, you do hear a few groans and moans from the perpetually discontented on ANF. But you rarely hear from the many thousands of foreigners who, like @Artisi and myself never have any reason to moan about the service they receive from Immigration. We tend to just get on with our lives.
  17. I've sent a lot of mail the the UK using Thai Post registered and never had one go missing.
  18. Yes they would. Have a look on the 2nd page of a TM7. You will read 'APPLICANT MUST SUBMIT THE APPLICATION IN PERSON WITH THE EXCEPTIONS OF HANDICAPPED PATIENTS OR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES'. My wife and I have already discussed such a situation with our IO at Sakon Nakhon and were told that they do have powers of discretion to enable my wife to arrange for an extension on my behalf. The wife of our (now deceased) German neighbour was able to do this after he had lost a leg due to diabetes.
  19. Sorry, I completely disagree with that. I've seen dramatic rises in pressure in SCUBA tanks that have been left out in the sun for too long. They, fortunately are built to much higher standards than fire extinguisher cylinders and can withstand it. It has now been established that there was no safety valve fitted to the one that exploded. That and the rise in pressure due to heat from the sun almost certainly caused this incident.
  20. Here's a good website for you @fred2028 that lists attractions in Udon Thani province. My favourite 'must see sites' are: 3. Wat Pa Phu Kon High in the hills to the east with a huge reclining Buddha. 5. Wat PhothiSomphon (find on Google maps as Wat Pa Ban Kho) This temple is amazing. The best by far Stuka I've ever seen and interesting museum. And one that isn't listed here is the Chinese Cultural Centre in down-town Udon. It's an interesting historical museum and a pleasant change from the (yawn) 'not another temple syndrome'. I used to visit this place regularly not the least because I have a particular interest in Confucius who is depicted there. Plenty more stuff to find and explore.
  21. So this is the price of Yaba in this country is it? Is it any wonder it's becoming such a major problem here.
  22. If you're going to catch any communicable disease, a hospital is the most likely place to do so. Which is why I avoid them like the plague. (yes pun intended)
  23. I've been involved directly and indirectly with fire extinguishers throughout my whole career and I've never heard about one exploding. But one big caveat, they do have to tested and certified regularly. I wonder whether they followed the rules and procedures in this instance.
