What was your job (profession) when you moved to Thailand
timendres replied to still kicking's topic in General Topics
Before TH, I was a programmer, mostly on a contract basis, with several brief stints as an employee. Started two companies along the way, both failed. When I came to TH full-time in 2010, I was working remote as a programmer for a firm in the US. Great salary, great work, lasted a few years. I then purchased a software development company in Bangkok. Work permit, Thai salary, decent work, did it for 10 years. Now retired. I have a BSEE that was essentially worthless, other than it being a degree, since I went straight into programming. However, way back then there were very few programmers, and demand was about to go parabolic. -

In my experience, it has been the other way around. Doctors from the private hospitals putting in time at government hospitals. A friend was provided a quote and he explained he could not pay. The doctor suggested he go to the government hospital where the same doctor would perform the procedure at a much lower cost.

My WP issued in 2014, like @Ralf001's WP was very "specific". However, someone showed me a more recent WP (cannot remember the issue date or when I saw it, but I think it was after 2019) that did not have all of those specifics. And, if I remember correctly, the change to the law was not "just do anything you wish". I seem to remember that it required approval by your primary employer and some other conditions. But it did allow you to work for someone other than your primary employer. Or work for your primary employer, but at different locations and in different capacities. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable can confirm...

It comes down to "slices". If the slice gap is wider than the object of interest, well, you won't necessarily see it. Or, you might get one or two slices of something you want 10 slices of. It is not (necessarily) a "trick". Bumrungrad saved my leg. Samitivej saved my life. Both were expensive for Thailand. Both were very much cheaper than the US where I am from. Certainly, much cheaper hospitals can handle many things just as well. I have yet to feel I have been ripped off in Thailand.

When getting an MRI, the primary concern is "resolution". I had a "cheap" MRI done for a tumor. I then returned to Samitivej hospital, where the doctor informed me that the MRI was useless to him, because there was not enough resolution to determine what he needed to know. What I did not understand was that the reason the MRI was so cheap was that they used older equipment that was low-resolution. I then had to pay another 20,000 to Samitivej to get an MRI that the doctor could actually use. So, be sure to ask the doctor what sort of resolution you need to be sure you are not wasting money.

The fare and airport fee should come in around 300 THB, depending greatly on traffic. Over 500 THB and I would be highly suspicious.

Not sure if you are set on Korat. Thai friend says that Khon Kaen is the place to go.

When I set it up, I needed to take a form provided by Manilla into Bangkok Bank, and the bank had to fill in a section at the bottom (with routing and account numbers) and sign the form. Returned to Manilla, time passed, change complete. I do not think you can just call up Manilla and tell them the details. They need a properly signed document requesting the change. But... it is simple just as @KhunLA suggests.

Make sure you have more than 50 minutes to spare. With traffic, that ride could be well over an hour.

I think it might be easier to order online. Here is one, but I am sure there are other choices. https://seasongroup.co.th/en/rubber-stamp-2

Or the damming of the Mehkong possibly?

The best girlfriend I ever had was from Ubon. More than looks, she had a genuinely beautiful heart. And so easy to live with.

This is the correct answer. When immigration sees the new TM30 for the one month rental, you simply show them the lease agreement for one month and explain that you are on vacation in that place and will return to your full-time residence. As long as the TM30 on the full-time residence does not have an end date, which it should not, then they should have no issues with this.

Yup. Here we are in 2024, and people still have no clue that smoking is harmful. Thank goodness for this new sign! It should turn things around. -
Government Policy?
timendres replied to Robin's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
The history behind this is quite interesting. The current "reinterpretation" is actually a "re-reinterpretation". The original tax code taxed all income remitted to Thailand. But many years ago, an "interpretation" was added to the tax code to state that the tax only applied to money earned "in the current year". This was done to help Thai laborers working in foreign countries who were remitting the money to support their families. If they saved their income until year end, then remitted in the following year (say on Jan 1), then no tax was collected. What they have done is to remove that "addition" from years ago, leaving the original tax code as it was in the beginning. -
annual fee charged on foreign customer credit card
timendres replied to jippytum's topic in Cryptocurrency News
Do you still receive interest on the money "withheld" to secure the card balance? If not, that is yet another charge for the card. Regardless, 1,284 seems entirely unreasonable. Given that my "no fee" debit card works with 99% of VISA merchants, I would see no reason to pay the charge. -
Interesting reading about Thailand and Thai people
timendres replied to Confuscious's topic in General Topics
Not even close to true. I have spent ten years hiring kids fresh out of college. Sure, the "context" changes, and the world is moving faster and getting smaller. But as I read the paper from 1990, I kept nodding and seeing its relevance even today. 25yo Thais are interpreting the modern world within the framework of their culture and, in my humble opinion, managing it better than their western counterparts. -
Well, in the case of my extension based on a work permit, the shear heft of the documents required, along with everything being in Thai, I was not about to even attempt such a task -- an agent is necessary. However, I did my first retirement extension on my own, as well as my marriage extension (with help from the wife). So, as you say, these do not require an agent, unless you just like having someone to hold your hand and do the talking for you.

I have had this issue with many computers in Thailand, and it has always been the result of not having a proper ground. When I have a proper ground, the same computer that gave me the tingles no longer does.
