  1. Now that you ask specifically, I realize that I have only received transfers from Thailand to the CapitalOne 360 account. My credit union has online provisions to wire money to Thailand, and that is how I transferred to Thailand the previous two times. I thought I had tested 360 to Thailand, but now realize I never got around to it.
  2. Quite right. It was 44 when I visited in 2001. I was thinking of the range of the past 15 years after that financial disaster "settled down".
  3. SSH has a configuration for timing out connections that are idle for a period of time. This was constantly frustrating for me until I found the configuration and set it to never timeout. You can Google this, but here is a place to start: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/4936807/how-to-set-ssh-timeout
  4. I opened an account with Capital One called the "360 Savings Account". I was able to open that account online from here in Thailand. Now I can use ACH transfers to and from Capital One, and use wire transfers to and from Thailand via the Capital One account. As others have noted, Wise is a popular choice, but I have no experience with Wise. I have been happy with Capital One. The interest paid is slightly better than my other banks, and the online experience is excellent. However, you need to note one thing: for some time now, I have needed to receive a code via SMS (phone call is also possible) to login, and this is only doable for me because I have a Skype account with a US phone number to receive those texts.
  5. Same for me. However, at that moment, it was an emergency situation, and I genuinely thought I was about to go into shock. I was screaming at the nurses to get someone in to swipe my card before I fell unconscious, knowing the potential for disaster if I was not able to complete the "necessary" deposit. An unconscious patient in an emergency situation should never be declined emergency care.
  6. Since the Thai baht went off the "peg" in 1997, USDTHB has ranged between (roughly) 29 and 36. So we are still in the upper end of the range. The recent weakness is due to the expectations of an impending rate cut in the US, which seems quite likely. However, due to the EuroDollar system that the world is currently based on, there is a very high likelihood that the USD will "melt up" during the next financial crisis, which could bring USDTHB to near all time highs in the upper forties. Unfortunately, that event will be the proverbial canary in the coal mine, indicating the stress the system is under, and the other side of that event is both scary and unpredictable. But due to the levels of US debt, the US has only one reasonable choice, which is to try and "inflate away" that debt, which will result in USD weakness of the highest order. So I am planning long term for a weaker dollar. My only hope is that Thailand's infamous competence will help keep the THB weaker as well.
  7. As @FritsSikkink stated, unless you can leverage the Amity Treaty, you cannot own a majority stake in such a company. I would never expose myself to that level of risk for something that requires as much investment as real estate. Furthermore, having a company that is involved in real estate will almost certainly bring you more scrutiny from the various governmental agencies involved, as this type of company is often used to circumvent the ownership prohibition. Also note that you will be unable to be involved in the operation of said company without a work permit. In other words, you cannot be meeting potential renters, nor be involved in the negotiations, and will be limited in your ability to do banking related to the operation (I was once rejected from making a bank transfer until I got my work permit). So you will need to hire a Thai employee for such operations. All said, I would never attempt something like this unless I intended to have a work permit, which is another can of worms to open.
  8. OnlyFans executives have convened an emergency meeting to discuss this clear threat to their business model.
  9. You probably do not need it. There are a number of reasons why people might need VPN: o Access content blocked by your country or ISP o Access media content not available in your country (e.g. Netflix US content from Thailand) o Required by your company to access company resources in a secure fashion o Attempt to hide your identity (not easy and VPN does not guarantee this) o Secure passing of sensitive information on the open web (i.e., you are sending login information over a non-HTTPS connection).
  10. In my case, my Thai wife hated the US and blamed me for "dragging" her there.
  11. I think you misunderstand the Thai government. They do not care about Thailand's reputation. They care about their reputation as Guardians of the Galaxy.
  12. Indeed. As is the lore handed down from girl to girl in every gogo bar since time immemorial.
  13. Very reasonable arguments. First, might I say that I would prefer my child be subjected to this crime as opposed to killed in some shooting event. So there is the question of the outcome. Yes, some children will be harmed mentally, others not so much. I was subjected to something very similar at the age of 11, and it was nothing for me. Just a stupid event. Each person will react differently. However, since we cannot dismiss the potential for mental and emotional harm, we must be err towards caution. I think what you are suggesting is that each case needs to be handled with perspective. For instance, if this guy were 16 years old or 19 years old, I would be more inclined to call it a stupid mistake. But this guy being 26, I would expect more maturity and be less inclined to think he is deserving of the second chance. But I do believe most people think second chances are good, because who has not made a mistake. But they need to have merit. Maybe some research showing the rate of recidivism, age, history, and other factors to decide which crimes are treated more leniently for first offenses, and which are not. I believe this is already done, but I do not know to what extent. I have been accused of being too optimistic, especially with regards to people, so take my bias into account.
  14. Are you from the US like me? He should be given a harsh sentence, maybe 6 months or 1 year, in a tough prison. Then remind him that a second offense will involve a much harsher sentence. We need to get over this idea of "locking people up for life" for what are essentially mistakes in judgement. People should be given a chance to reconstruct their lives after such a mistake and become better citizens. Make the same mistake twice, and you have proven that you do not learn, then we decide you need to be removed from society.
  15. Recently went to Bangkok Bank branch on Sukhumvit in Bangkok. This is the computer the person helping me was using: I have not seen a 3.5 floppy drive in over a decade.
  16. I believe the poster was referring to: "ensuring the conflict does not expand to consume the entire Middle East.", in which case, the US might be pulled into the action, and thus body bags nearly guaranteed. Doubtful, however, that this would unfold before the next election.
  17. Dengue worries me much more so than Covid.
  18. When I was young, back in the 1960's. I remember so many accidents. Kids losing arms and fingers. Kids losing their lives. It was very common. Farm equipment is very powerful. Deceptively powerful in ways. Never to be treated with anything less than utter respect. My sincere sympathies to his family.
  19. That is a good question. My agent was able to go to "an office" (forgive me for not knowing, but I think the "land office"), and was able to get a copy from them, since it is a public record.
  20. Do not know how to answer that question. They wanted the Tabien Baan and Thai ID of the owner that was on the lease. I believe they also wanted the Title, but not absolutely sure of that. Possibly this is where the address discrepancy came up. Unfortunately, it was all happening quickly in Thai, and my agent did not explain it very well, and I really did not care the details - I just wanted it all to end. That is why I pay an agent. To make the pain go away.
