  1. I went go-karting in RCA last week, which was really good fun, only 390 Baht for 2 ten minute races during their "happy hour" (from 7pm till 9pm I think).

Apart from this I like going to the driving range, swimming, also planning on starting playing squash and tennis. There is a lot to do here if you can get out of the rut of going to the pub/malls.

  2. almost without exception thailand will quite quickly demystify itself once you come live here, and pretty soon the fantasy gets separated from the reality, some people get disillusioned while others adapt and learn to accept a more flawed version of their imagined thailand. overall i would say most people learn to adapt and remain largely contented, like me.

in a perfect world i would be spending part of my life here in Bkk and the rest in other asia pacific cities, but since i have to work here i'm quite happy to be spending most of my life in thailand right now, and sometimes i get lazy to travel for holidays because here is where holiday makers end up anyway.

but as a long term thing i'd go back and retire in australia simply because of the better environment and much better heathcare. i still call australia home.

    Wise words. :o

  3. Sorry to piss on the collective bonfire here, but the McMuffins are actually being made with regular burger baps according to one of my friends. I haven't made it to try for myself yet, can anyone confirm if this is the case? I love MaccyD's breakfast and had one in KL this week, it would be great to get them here too...

  4. Not the funniest story, but awkard none the less... Whilst travelling in my GF's uncles car along with about 5 of the "poo yais" in her family, she thought it would be funny to ask me in front of everyone "Who is prettier, me or my mum?" in Thai. Then followed an agonising couple of seconds with everyone looking at me fumbling around trying to decide the best answer, before they all pissed themselves laughing. I suppose they recognised my nervousness and played a little joke, pretty funny really. Needless to say, I got my own back on her when I took her to England.

  5. Not everybody has to throw around with cheesy Americanisms

No idea what you mean here.

Not just in Asia people have laughed about this disaster

Does that make it OK then?

made jokes about it...i believe is called something like "Gallows Humor", or "Black Humor

Finding bad taste humour in the way of cheap gags and puns following a sad event such as this (see the Pavarotti and Steve Irwin jokes that have been posted on ThaiVisa in the past) is different to laughing at the images of a disaster on the scale of 9/11 unfolding on TV in front of you.

  6. QUOTE(Aussietraveller @ 2007-09-22 20:46:58)

I regularly fly Long Haul on Qantas, BA, Thai, Singapore Airlines and Emirates.

I would not hesitate to fly on any of them.

Short Haul in Asia I use Air Asia, Jet Star Asia, TG, Sin.

I have in the past flown 12GO, however i would be hesitant to do so again.

    Just my personal opinion.

It's not work, I would guess. Hobby?

No western company would send you on Emirates, Air Asia, jet Star or 1-2-go.

    What's wrong with Emirates?!!

I work for a "Western Company" and I have been sent on Air Asia for a local flight on a couple of occasions...

  7. No, it's not sad at all - it's just not western. Why do people assume that the rest of the world reacts to any situation in the same way that they do? Why should short explosive exhalations of breath be treated the world over as exhibitions of amusement

Come off it! Laughing at a distaster like that is wrong no matter where you are in the world. How can you even begin to condone it?

Laughing at someone slipping over a banana skin is one thing, thousands of people being killed on live TV is something quite different.

  8. Studio apartment (including reasonable use of air-con) should be around 1,000-1,500 Baht a month (assuming you are paying direct and not getting charged extra by the apartment).

If you are concerned, buy a small electric fan (or borrow one?...)

  9. I suspect that there is more effort to censor Myanmar from opposition forces on the outside than there is from the government. I gave up on trying to find anyone that had anything good to say about Myanmar. I also gave up on finding statements of defense posted by the Myanmar government. The net is flooded with pro democracy horror stories that I believe are probably pure bull. Censorship regarding Myanmar is definitely happening by some big brother force representing the global business mafia mentality.

The most positive word on conditions in Myanmar comes from the pictures posted by pro democracy forces. The alleged victims of oppression appear to be quite happy, well clothed and well fed.I could go to any downtown corner here in Canada and find more convincing photo's of suffering and despair.

When I compare Thai and Burman photos to Canadian realities I feel that both the Thai and Myanmar governments should be commended while our Canadian democratic masters deserve a kick in the butt.

Are you for real? Have you ever left Canada?

  10. Hi everyone,

I am thinking about flying to Dubai this evening to suprise my brother who lives there. I don't have a ticket but I have called a travel agent and also Emirates ticket office in BKK. They have both quoted me about 23-24k Baht.

Last time I flew there (a few months ago) it was 20k, although I booked it about 4 weeks in advance.

Does anyone know of a good way to get last minute discounted flights? Is it possible to turn up at the Emirates office in Suvanabhumi before the flight leaves and get a cheap deal? Any experiences/suggestions?

    Cheers.

  11. Wow, thanks for the post very informative.

Also the Travelmate 4720 is "discontinued" and no longer available and pulled from distribution. So you will find it hard to get service, upgrades, or parts later on. So buy what you can now.

Are you sure about this?!! I only bought it about 3 weeks ago!!
