Foreign man caught urinating on tuk tuk amid traffic jam in Phuket
richard_smith237 replied to webfact's topic in Phuket News
‘we’ ?? Who is ‘we’…. Evidently Lordgrinz cares otherwise he would not have highlighted where it was a Songthaew or a TukTuk…. & evidently you care enough to respond to that point as to whether it’s worth caring about… … Perhaps no one cares whether you care about the point or not… That’s the thing with web forums - the most pointless & inane comments are made… such as “who cares”… If you didn’t care at all, you wouldn’t not have commented on any of the points in this thread, you’d be busy plebbing away on another topic… -
BTW: I'm not defending KFC or fast food... we have it (either KFC or BurgerKing etc) perhaps once a year on at a drive through on a major highway when on a road trip somewhere and tight on time... .. It does its job - fills a gap, isn't horrific.. plain and simple.... But the reasons some people are throwing out there to avoid KFC are rather neurotic and unhinged when considering what else they may be eating or drinking in their day to day lives.

Always on a thread about delivery there is some bright spark who always misses the point and suggests... "walk there".... completely ignoring the whole point about the convenience of delivery... For any reason we feel like, sometimes we don't want to walk - its just that simple !! ... and that doesn't mean people are fat overweight slobs, it just means people don't want to walk everywhere, thats it.

Is it safe to take a taxi alone in Bangkok?
richard_smith237 replied to Rachel2023's topic in Thailand Travel Forum
Any reason not to take BOLT ?? I find both BOLT and GRAB similar in standards of service (within Bangkok). So I'm curious why you offer this advice, info would be useful, not just for the Op, but for others. When in Bangkok - taking the SkyTrain (within hours) if travelling from and to routes on that Sky Train is a good call. I think the greatest risk for a lone female would be travelling back from somewhere such as Khao Sarn Road to elsewhere in the City after midnight. But that advice is only covering Bangkok... There is also Samui / Phuket / Chiang Mai etc to consider (depending on where the Op is travelling to etc). -
Is it safe to take a taxi alone in Bangkok?
richard_smith237 replied to Rachel2023's topic in Thailand Travel Forum
Generally, Thailand is very safe for a female traveller - but there have been issues that have reached the news in the past. As a female traveler it would be advised to take the same common sense precautions you would take elsewhere when when not having a complete 'feel' for the place. My Wife (Thai) used to drive & drink when we she went out (before we were married & still living with her parents) to avoid having to take a taxi - neither she or her friends would take taxi's at night. I think this is the 'litmus test' - what do the local females do. Some will take a taxi alone. But many will not, especially if they have alternative means. Get a Local SIM (with Phone and Data) which is every inexpensive (True / AIS / DTAC ) are all decent and you won't pay much at all for a lot of Data and minutes - Download GRAB App and BOLT as soon as you can and register with your a number. Precautions to take are: 1) Ride Hailing Apps - both BOLT and GRAB are the main ones and work well. 2) Taking a flag fall taxi - fine in the day time when travelling within busy areas 3) Flag fall taxi - at night presents an element of risk for a lone female. The risks for a lone female obviously become elevated when travelling at night, especially if inebriated and traveling through or to non-built up area's. In such cases, ensure you can always travel with a trusted friend (which may be difficult considering you are travelling alone) and definitely rely on an App service (BOLT / Grab) whenever possible. Also note: Different cities and area's have different transport options: Bangkok has Taxi's (GRAB & BOLT) - other area's you are relying on Song Thaews (pickups with bench seats in the back) or TukTuks - they'll be running on a regular circulate, or you'll need to negotiate your fair and destination etc. As far as the Apps themselves Go (particularly in Bangkok... GRAB : - JustGrab: - Anything will arrive (from the below options) - GrabTaxi: - Which is just regular taxi's (but the ride is at least registered) - GrabCar: - Which theoretically is a regular car and driver (not a taxi - but thats a little hit and miss) - GrabCar for Females: - though that will reduce the time it takes to get a taxi. - GrabPremium: - More expensive, but operates at a higher service (better cars & drivers) BOLT: - Taxi: regular Taxi;s - Economy: Smaller Car - Ladies: Lady Driver - Bolt: Regular car and driver (not a taxi) - Comfort: Premium version Both BOLT and GRAB have similar services - there's not really much to tell them apart except that Bolt is often a little cheaper - depending on the time of day etc both will be anything from 1.5x to 3x the cost for a regular flag fall taxi ride. -
Claiming Legal Fees as Damages in Thai Lawsuits
richard_smith237 replied to ElephantEgo's topic in General Topics
Interesting question... From a moral perspective - I would think why should the 'victim' have to also pay legal fees It becomes a little more complex as you (your wife) instigated legal proceedings, but also won, proving that doing so was the correct course of action, but proved more costly in the end - which I'm sure you knew would be the case. So, you've paid for a moral victory - clear the name so to speak. ... Had your Wife lost, should she have been expected to pay the legal fees of the defence ? -
Line app. How to 'Leave' a chat? (not group chat)
richard_smith237 replied to JeffersLos's topic in Mobile Devices and Apps
This stuff is not exactly challenging, but it does seem some posters have their ideas to do something 'exactly the way they want' and have it work in 'exactly the same manner they want'... Its not possible to 'leave' a chat between two people (in Line Messenger). You can block the contact and prevent them from contacting you from that account, and keep your record of the chat. You can delete the chat, and delete the record of the chat. You can delete the chat and block the contact, deleting the record of the chat and prevent the contact from contacting You from their account. In a two person chat, the other party will not know what you have done, you'll just have disappeared, unless you want to have that 'last word' and tell them you are leaving, then do so never to reply again. I'm not sure what all the big deal is though - if you want to leave a two person chat, just delete it and don't reply. Its the similar for a group-chat, they can add you again if they want, unless you block the 'group'... I've over explained it 10 fold... its really is as simple as it appears - delete and block of thats what you want to do. If you only want to leave and not receive further messages from that contact, just leave and block. -

Indian tourist's holiday horror: Robbed, assaulted in Pattaya
richard_smith237 replied to webfact's topic in Pattaya News
Accusing an Indian man of 'being up to no good' simply because he's in a multicultural holiday resort by the simple virtue of him being Indian is blatantly racist. You then resort to abusive language using the words 'tosser' and 'fool'... Your crude socio-phonetics and flawed vernacular scream of a fundamentally flawed education and a glaring lack of basic decency. It's painfully obvious you lack the ability to hold a rational discussion to back up your bigoted and racist opinions. Just like Army admissions, there should be minimal IQ thresholds for posting rights. That way, we wouldn't have to endure such utterly unintelligent drivel from bigoted racists. The two quotes are extremely fitting - No further comment from me towards you, I'll take the historical advice of Mark Twain. Ricky Gervais -"When you are dead, you do not know you are dead. It's only painful and difficult for others. The same applies when you are stupid." Mark Twain - “Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.” -

richard_smith237 replied to webfact's topic in Phuket News
It is, but for some strange reason they call them Tuk Tuks in Phuket! A grey area, but its about the size more than anything I think. Tuk-Tuks are not universally three wheels. The name 'tuk-tuk' comes from the sound of the 'put-put' engine used... But I've also heard that the name 'tuk-tuk' comes from the sound of their horn when trying to attract passengers... The name Song-Thaew comes from 'two rows' (as in two rows of bench seats) - which many Tuk-Tuks also are. As I've always understood it, or as I've always named them: Song-Thaew is a Pickup based vehicle with bench-seats (as they have in Pattaya) Tuk-Tuk - Small 3 Wheeled vehicles (Bangkok - as they have in Bangkok). Tuk-Tuk - Small 3 Wheeled vehicles (as they have in Phuket - rear or side entry). So - the photo's below - all show tuk-tuks... (not Song Thaews). None usually have buckets... -
Buffalo’s Road Death Sparks Chaos in Chiang Mai, Four Injured

That would imply that I only 'talk negative' of Thailand and use every opportunity, never missing a chance to 'talk negative' of Thailand.... ... In making such an implication you'd be relying on a very incorrect assumption in an attempt to shoe horn in a personal dig - not very clever. -

Time to start backing up your device... Regaining security access to some of the more secure apps such as mBanking etc could be a hassle, but only if overseas, because obtaining a new SIM card so you could receive OTP to your number would be the stumbling point. -
What's your favourite beer for the home?
richard_smith237 replied to scubascuba3's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
If you like IPA and can find this beer in your area - its well worth a go - Mahanakorn White IPA (about 120 baht) (I picked this up in Gormet Market at EmQuatier - but sure its available elsewhere too)... Best beer in Thailand IMO - along with Fullmoon Brewworks 'SayPlay' IPA (about 80 baht)... (available at 7-11's in BKK and other supermarkets such as Gormet / Villa etc) -
Locals try to ban Brits from beaches
richard_smith237 replied to MalcolmB's topic in UK & Europe Topics and Events
I don't disagree... many Brits behave poorly, as do tourists from other nations. We could be digging up news of Americans in Cancun or Australians in Bali etc - wherever there are a lot of tourists from any one nation, an element of contempt develops with the locals. That said, I don't spend my time digging up news about Brit's.. Perhaps I'm also negatively bias against MalcomB and what appears to be an anti-British agenda, even though in this thread he appears to be levying upset against the Spanish for wanting to prevent the British from travelling to 'their area'... I read into his threads an underlying negativity towards the Brits, in this case I suspect he was hoping the discussion will develop into a "Can't blame the locals for not wanting the British there" type of bash - he's just being a little less obvious about it as he's been called out too many times already for his anti-British trolling. ... Perhaps I'm over reading to much into his threads ?... Or, perhaps I already have a handle on where he'd like to direct the tone of the thread and have called it before it happens. -

richard_smith237 replied to MalcolmB's topic in UK & Europe Topics and Events
Most of this Op's content is Brit-bashing... he seeks it out and reposts it on this site. He's British, but clearly with an anti-British agenda claiming 'embarrassment of his countrymen'. In this thread he's attempted to mask his negative bias with a very thinly veiled comment regarding the issue that locals in areas Spain with exceptionally high British tourist footfall are viewed with a degree of contempt due to poor behavior which may nudge them to Thailand... which is utter rubbish and a very poor attempt to shoe horn in some Thailand relevance to his troll. -
Is that the kiwi brand Mainland? It's good value and better than their tasty cheddar. Epicure is the one... If you can find it. Its not sold everywhere, but readily available in Bangkok, so it maybe available there in Chiang Mai, Vintage is more common though.

Great for you - but you appear to be claiming 'attitude' can impact longevity which is flawed in absolute terms - You've been very lucky, perhaps genetically so, nevertheless, very lucky. I know plenty of people who's life and quality of life has been prolonged due to medical intervention after routine investigation for something simple... i.e. Colonoscopies.... breast cancer check, skin cancer checks etc.. seems the 'C word' is the big one and if caught early enough in a lot of cases is fully recoverable (sadly I also know of plenty where it was simply too aggressive). My medical bills this year alone have exceeded 500,000 baht... over the past couple of years, they have exceded approximately 1,300,000 baht... a bad run of sports injuries... of course, self insuring I'd have gone to cheaper hospitals but perhaps would have had to wait for longer for treatment... You did mention 'living sensibly' but does that mean stopping sports so we don't get injured, or not riding a motorcycle any more due to risk of injury vs a car etc ? At 70 yrs + I may well have to self insure too though - the premiums are insane. Getting citizenship would be a solution - but thats impossible for many of us who've not worked here for the last 3 yrs.

It's a File photo for reference only An actual photo of the bike is in another thread, here ... Brilliant - the manner in which ridicule is thrown at the Thai police and the term 'forensic inspector' is thrown out there without being 'forensic' enough to identify that the photo is 'reference only' !!...

Because the contractor was told to erect light poles along the road, the weren't told to wire them up or add bulbs !!!... Facetious comment I know - but after seeing the work of contractors here its amazing to discover the lowness of short-cut taking involved... it seems, if there is the slightest option for a short-cut, its taken.

The last time I was on 'interprovincial roads' at night (dual lane in each direction) it was pitch black, absolute darkness and no visibility at all without headlights.. I had to slow down to drive within my visibly (not to out drive the headlights) but other vehicles were still screaming past me at what I can only estimate was 120 kmh ++ In this case the 'crashed bike' should have had lights that made it still visible to the oncoming Pajero driver - was the driver paying attention, going too fast etc ? As far as falling of a bike in the middle riding in a straight line... I've been reading recently of people coming off bikes due to debris on the road - this could be a possibility... (and / or.. just a drunk rider - which wouldn't be a surprise).
