Why are there so many haters on this site?
richard_smith237 replied to reflectionx's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
I’d agree with you if people are complaining about the head.. but thats not it... they complain about many subjects. I speak with my Thai friends and come on this site and read exactly the same opinions from posters who are then told ‘go home if you don’t like it’ by fools who think we are guests in this country and have no rights to an opinion. I discuss with my Wife who reads Pantip.com (a Thai forum) who discusses with me exactly the same complaints I see on this forum. I see far more similarity in our ‘observation’ with our Thai neighbours and peers that I do differences - yet there are many who cannot handle that ‘non-Thais’ (i.e. us on the forum) have opinions which are not always rose tinted, complimentary or entirely positive and accuse them of being a Thai basher or ‘hating’..... There are of course ‘Thai bashers’ but they are far far fewer than implied by the frequency of accusations thrown around against people who have valid gripes, negative experiences and accurate opinions..... ... A lot of the same people who voice these negative opinions are also often the voice of reason instead of burying their heads in the sand and refusing to accept anything is other than perfect. Its all about balance - there are nut-cases at both ends of the spectrum... but because someone has a negative (or even positive) opinion, it doesn’t make them a ’basher’ a ‘hater’ or even 'rosed tinted' at the other end of the spectrum if their opinions are factual and presented with balance. The issue is that the voices on the extreme and fringes are often the loudest and dilute the validity of the genuine points presented with greater balance. -

Always the same type of dumb-a$$ reply from people who’ve ‘gone native’.... .... Thai’s have exactly the same complaints of Thailand as many of us Westerners do... we all feel the same frustrations here and in our home nations. When Thai’s go to the UK they too complain about the things we also complain about (rail strikes, baggage handling and excessive overzealous security at airports and many other things)... It always seems that when someone makes an observation of anything which is not positive, there is always someone who accuses them of being a hater, or a Thai-basher when instead many times they have simple made factual observations and found this forum to voice a frustration. -
Since my Pfizer and Moderna vaccinations I have developed some severe side effects.... .... I have developed an overwhelming intolerance for ill-informed fools spreading misinformation and paranoia while quoting from within their own echo-chamber rhetoric

I don’t believe there is a ‘link’ between DLT Tax and traffic fines.... Each year we renew our Tax (online and the tax ‘square’) is posted to us (Wife takes care of it all) and there is never an issue.... we always have loads of outstanding speeding and traffic offence fines. It’s really not something I bother about... They can’t get the system right: The car is registered in my Wife’s name, the tickets always go to her parents house in Bangkok, yet the car, her driving licence, her ID, her tax records, everything is registered to our home in Bangkok... (she has nothing registered at her parents house anymore yet tickets still go there) - Maybe the DLT do not update their records. Thus: we can claim we never get the tickets (her parents bring them over). For the sanctimonious: The speeding tickets are for doing 126 kmh in a 120 kmh zone etc... (yes, we’re terrible people !).... we also get a repeated ticket for crossing a ‘solid white line’ near our house where the road markings are very poorly thought out / designed. ------- Thus: To answer the Ops question: I don’t know where or how to find out if there are any outstanding tickets, but, its not something I would even be concerned about. There will be another 20+ announcements about points systems etc before anything actually starts getting enforced.

Heat Index is usually quoted which covers a combination of Humidity and Temperature, its often reported as ‘feels like’... As an example, recently in the Middle East it was 63 Deg C heat index... dangerously hot.

Chief: 3 dead in Indiana mall shooting; witness kills gunman
richard_smith237 replied to Scott's topic in World News
Justifiably, Seems the shooter had tons of ammo. Potentially scores could have been killed or wounded had it not been for the responder's intervention. If everyone was carrying automatic assault rifles the gunman would have never attempted to shoot innocent others.... ???? -
Put those same people in 0 degrees c and see what happens !!!... Its about familiarity and acclimatisation.... I’m currently holidaying in the UK.... in the past 7 days I’ve seen my own breath (on a cold evening) and seen my car show 42 degrees C... I’ve walked out of a supermarket into a wall of warmth never noticed before in my home nation. Its jeffing hot.... and not a problem if its reffing hot every day as we’d get used to it, have Air-con or at least be familiar and know how to acclimatise and handle it.... But... don’t worry about that... you have this..

Accusing single males of pedophile
richard_smith237 replied to georgegeorgia's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
It has everything to do with crossing boundaries... the reason people react extremely in defence of children is that they fear boundaries may be crossed even if they haven’t already.... The Op is about those who’d respond ‘pre-emptively’ to the projection of someone else crossing a boundary which may never be crossed and how as single males (or males without a visible partner nearby) we’d react to such an unwarranted and undeserved response based on an unfounded projection. -

You can tell a persons accent by looking at them ? Wow ???????? I have a mate who likes to play ‘guess the nationality’ when we’re out having a drink... He gets about 7 out of 10 right.... (we find out by asking ppl)... he’s better than I at the game, but yes... clothing and behaviour often helps the profile... ... others are more ‘inert' but still have a tell... If you can’t tell this Charlie, you may not be observant enough thats all... but there are ways to tell and get it right quite often and some nationalities have dead easy giveaways.... -
If anyone has read ‘The Hot Zone’.... a novel about viral hemorrhagic fevers; particularly ebolaviruses and marburgviruses then this name [Marburg] should be familiar to them. I read this book back in Uni.... I scared the living cr@p out of me... still does !!... the movie; Outbreak with Dustin Hoffman, Rene Russo, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacey captures some of the fear, but the book itself is spine chilling considering its based on fact. I dance in front of the Devil and laugh in the face of Covid but excrete my internal organs in the presence of Ebola and Marburg viruses.... Horrible stuff but fortunately (for the aggregate population) so deadly it kills before it travels too far (hopefully).

Accusing single males of pedophile
richard_smith237 replied to georgegeorgia's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
Another facet of this is protecting ourselves.... Do we (if we are single males or out without our significant other) want to interact with children ? I do, if the situation is right and kid is playful etc... it maybe just a smile or a wave etc... but I am conscious of how this could be construed by someone over reaction. A friends career was nearly ruined... He had a horrible unruly kid in his class, he’d had to call in someone to watch his class while he frog-marched the student to the head-teacher. By the time he’d arrived at the head-teachers office the student threw out the accusation that she had been molested by the teacher (my friend) on the short walk there. My friends career was nearly destroyed and he had to ’stand down’ (stay at home) while a full investigation was carried out. The madness here is that every situation is dealt with extremely seriously and ‘crying wolf’ has serious consequences... In the modern world, adults in general have to place themselves in positions of ‘caution’ so they can never be wrongly accused.... society strongly reacts, mud sticks. That said: In the example provided by George... I’d tell fat-karen to pi$$ off and stop blocking the sun... -

I would draw the line of being accused of anything I’m not guilty of, full stop. I’d tell the fat Karen to pi$$ off. The world has gone way too PC and while I am very supportive of protecting children in any situation that does not supersede the needs, convenience or enjoyment of perfectly ‘normal’ other people and strangers. ------------ I’m currently holidaying in the UK... All nephews at the local cricket club.. They nearly had to cancel as there are not enough coaches to (many gone on holiday)... I pointed out (to my sister who was running it) that I could step in a coach the kids for a hour if it means not cancelling (about 100 kids in total decided by 5 coaches). (I used to coach sports to kids as a summer job, I was also a lifeguard). My sister pointed out that I’m not permitted to coach the kids or interact as I’m supposed to have a DBS check certificate (which highlights I’m not on the sex offenders list or some such thing). So... 100 kids nearly missed out on their fun activity because the weren’t permitted to more than 20 kids per coach and I couldn’t prove I wasn’t a pedo or perv. Fortunately for the children, another guy was called in - he’s awaiting a knee operation and could hardly move !!!... but he had the DBS check. This led to a debate later on with my sister.... I argued the world has gone a little mad.. Too PC. Kids need protecting, but I’m not sure society is going the correct way about this and now the media has frightened the <deleted> out of parents. As a parent only real safe way to protect children is to give them to the confidence to discuss anything with us openly. As far as other adults talking to my Son is concerned.... Any other person is welcome to talk and interact with my son, just so long as they are also polite and considerate. We were recently camping... my son was in the stream 20 meters away... other adults would walk past, talk to him, ask him what he is making etc... but they were couples. Would I be concerned if it were a single male ?... perhaps some caution would cross my mind, but then I’d realise the media has forced this concern and I need to rise above dumbing down my opinions to the lowest common denominator of the media frightening everyone just to get clicks and sell webpage real estate.- 89 replies

As UbonJoe wrote - the Bangkok Bank mobile phone App does have an option to request a historical statement and that is e-mailed within 5 mins (usually). However, the statement is not quite 12 months (even though the App states ‘you can request your statement history up to the past 12 months’). i.e when requesting a statement today the earliest the e-mailed statement will start on is the 1st August-2021 and go up to the latest transaction (up to yesterday). So.. its not quite ticking the 12 months statement box.... I wonder if the box-checkers at ChaengWattana will be ok with this ’technical difference’. -
This..... totally agree. If HMPO were a business it would have failed as people move to the competition... They would be forced to get rid of the half-wits hiding behind covid to continue their self entitled laziness. When government business models operate without consideration for making improvements and pushing the weakest common denominators, those weakest common denominators; the lazy slow and ineffective people stagnated or even get promoted to positions beyond their ability and those who were effective have moved on elsewhere. It's an utter embarrassment.

Then they should not be called ‘Life guards’.... Call them beach sitters or whatever, but do not provide the public with the idea that the beaches are patrolled for their safety. Lifeguards are supposedly strong swimmers and have equipment to aid with a rescue. That said - you make a valid point, why should a life-guard risk his life when people ignore a clear warning sign. If the flags were ‘red and yellow’ indicating patrolled beach, then one would expect the lifeguards to be able to do their job. That said: The lifeguards were clearly prepared to go out and fetch the unconscious swimmers, so they had the equipment and the swimming ability. What is clearly missing is their observational skills in failing to recognise the swimmers getting into trouble early enough.
-
Exactly... OK... so there were red flags, and (supposedly) the lifeguards warned the tourist not to swim. Then another Thai person (55 yr old Surasit) spotted the British tourist in trouble and helped, tragically sealing his own fate. What on earth were the lifeguards doing at this time ??? - they knew it was dangerous, told the British Guy (Ali Mohammed Mian) not to swim and then forgot about him and didn’t even watch him in the sea ??? It would appear these lifeguards don’t think they need to ‘observe’ people entering the water. ------ Clearly the sea state in Phuket at this time of year is risky, there have been so many reports of people getting into trouble... this year it seems to have gained more attention. Are we to see a knee-jerk reaction from authorities ???.... Ban tourists from swimming in the sea ???

"Just because no one is following you it doesn’t mean they aren’t after you !!!" ------- Accused of rape of two fourteen year olds... Carrying a gun and 30 rounds of ammo. Crystal Meth found. The police did an excellent job of ensuring this guy didn’t get back on the the road, drive like a lunatic into a busy area and risk more lives. This is clearly one situation where the Thai BiB performed well. The guy didn’t need to fire his gun... I don’t think there is anything more to see here than a drug fuelled nutter on the run.

It can’t be less ready than the Uk’s main port of entry (LHR)… Suvarnabumi is an absolute pleasure compared to the shambles that is are the UKs main Airports; Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester…. The only things impressive about the uk airports are the length of the lines to go through security screening, the zig-zag through brightly lit Duty-free making you walk twice as long and the amount of stuff that doesn’t work (if you’ve ever arrived in the uk and all escalators & travelators are working you have witnessed rarity !)…,

I’ve been flying to and though Dubai & Qatar numerous times (every 1-2 months) over the past couple of years… No issues whatsoever… Last month flight was delayed by 30mins in Bkk, baggage made it through to my onward flight with 45min ‘layover’ in Qatar. A couple of weeks ago, in & out of Dubai, completely hassle free… meanwhile Wife’s friends are posting of their arrival in Heathrow and waiting 2 hours for their bags….

Rather embossing from a ‘so called First World G-8 Nation’ that it can’t get the basics right. If this happened in Thailand we’d (yes, me included) would be full of criticism of incompetence. It rather frustrating and pathetic that people are being paid to sit at home (on benefits) while these issues are ongoing. Poor management, a self-entitled work force and companies cutting workers to maximize profits & cut costs…. How is it the Middle East airlines didn’t face these same issues ?

Religious holidays bring two day alcohol ban this week
richard_smith237 replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
We’re on holiday and just popped to the supermarket to stock up on some supplies…. I fancy a G&T this evening so figured I’d get a bottle of Tanqueray…. …No issues with ‘oh bo!!ox its 3pm, we can’t’…. … No issues with ‘oh bo!!ox it’s a religious holiday, we can’t’…. We’re not in Thailand, Qatar or any other country with pathetic nonsensical and puritanical booze rules….
