  1. Thailand (then Kingdom of Siam) itself engaged in colonization, ie., the seizure of the Kingdom of Patani Sultanate in 1786.
  2. from Google: "A weather advisory for the area had been issued by the Thailand Meteorological Department, warning of 4-metre-high (13 ft) waves and advising ships to "proceed with caution".[9] She was caught in a storm on 18 December.[10] Seawater entering an exhaust port led to flooding and a heavy list, followed by a short circuit in the ship's electrical system and failure of the pumps.[11] This flooding caused the engines to fail, and the pumps became unusable." there were not enough life jackets on board the ship for the regular crew plus thirty extra people who were to take part in a ceremony, but that the chances of survival were the same with or without life jackets." A lot of failures that the US would like to understand with regard to the ship operations. But since when is survival the same with or without life jackets? Maybe Thailand needs to understand such a policy.
  3. Public knowledge apparently with apparent zero action by the government/RTP to make that section safer. What about a couple of solar powered street lamps to highlight the stretch to provide awareness of its danger? How many injuries and lives are required for safer use?
  4. Seems Thailand governments focus on Inflow FDI (IFDI) with seemingly little consideration of Outflow FDI (OFDI) that is being substituted with focus on Thailand-bound tourism. It's like "Give Me your money and I will help you visit Thailand" kind of economics - complete economic disconnect in foreign trade relations. "Outward foreign direct investment: A new channel for development" by Matthew Stephenson & Jose Ramon Perea |October 23, 2018 https://blogs.worldbank.org/psd/outward-foreign-direct-investment-new-channel-development OFDI can be used to source knowledge and technology (aka Innovation) not present in the home market. These knowledge effects can benefit not only outwardly invested firms, but also domestic firms in the home economy OFDI can boost home country exports through complementary relationships, for instance by opening new export markets or increasing the demand for intermediate exports. The UK has substantial export trade to Kazakhstan far exceeding Thailand's export trade consistent with its Outflow FDI exceeding Thailand IFDI and OFDI. A Net FDI between nations provides a trade equilibrium that is sustainable for both nations. Thailand seems to understand the value of this concept among some of its its ASEAN neighbors but extending substantial OFDI outside of the region seems lacking.
  5. Does Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin not understand how interest rates are determine by BOT/MPC? The Governor does not make the sole determination. The 7-member MPC votes on the rate determined by majority vote. Recently, the Committee voted 5 to 2 to maintain the policy rate at 2.50 percent that is consistent with preserving macro-financial stability, a key foundation for sustainable growth in the longer term. Two MPC members voted to cut the policy rate by 0.25 percentage points to reflect a lower potential growth as a result of structural challenges. https://www.bot.or.th/en/news-and-media/news/news-20240207.html PM Thavisin seems more driven by political urgency to stay in power than he is by actual economic realities. It's illegal to gamble in Thailand. Yet, that's what PM Thavisin seems to want the MPC to do in establishing interest rates based on hopeful outcome of future events. Isn't that the same as betting in a game of roulette - illegal in Thailand.
  6. I wouldn't describe 40% as "most" for a "yes" vs "no" question unless a significant "I don't know" is included in the responses. Otherwise 60% would agree? Versus online survey? Can be a case of bias in direct phone poll vs online survey via cell phone (vs land line). "Phone vs. online surveys: Why do respondents’ answers sometimes differ by mode?", https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2019/02/07/phone-vs-online-surveys-why-do-respondents-answers-sometimes-differ-by-mode/
  7. Brave new PM. Causing loss of face for AoT and Immigration. Essentially - 'You don't know your job enough to even see the problems, much less solutions.' Might be time for competent airport leadership, especially before the third runway and terminal go operational.
  8. President Biden won South Carolina Democrat primary by more than 97% of the vote - that's the power of an incumbent. Trump at fifth-ish in the Republican/MAGA primary is weak, not a sound thrashing of Haley.
  9. Should be easy to verify. Any interview of the "large truck" driver? "However, an attempt to overtake a 10-wheel truck took a dramatic turn when a steering malfunction caused the bus to veer off the road, catapulting the passengers into a narrative none had anticipated." https://thai.news/news/thailand/malaysian-tourists-narrow-escape-in-kanchanaburi-a-harrowing-detour-on-thailand-adventure Was there a dash cam on the bus and/or truck? If not should be mandatory all tour buses. What was the urgency to pass the 10-wheel truck, late for the restaurant reservation?
  10. IF so how about a through investigation of the Trump crime family et al benefiting from foreign powers during Trump's administration? When dies the rule of law supply yo them?
  11. Annual number of outbound tourists to Thailand from South Korea from 2000 to 2023: 1,660,000 in 2023 vs 618,000 in 2009. Thailand needs So. Korean tourists. On average, a Koreans spend between $1,000 to $2,000 per person on an international trip, based on an average trip stay of 4.61 days. Bite your tongue Thailand and open your wallet.
  12. Stateless peoples in Thailand need not apply.
  13. There's nothing defamatory about not being paid to perform a contracted service and revealing such breach of contract. Still the actor treads very carefully because of how loosely defamation in Thailand has been defined that stresses constitutional freedom of speech.
  14. Likely irrelevant as they live in Thailand as indigenous peoples but denied citizenship or visas because they lack necessary documentation. "Thailand has a registered stateless population of more than half a million – one of the largest in the world. Nearly a quarter of them live in Chiang Mai. They are mostly members of indigenous ethnic minorities from the mountainous border areas." "The 1954 Convention's most significant contribution to international law is its definition of a “stateless person” as someone “who is not considered as a national by any State under operation of its law.” For those who qualify as stateless persons, the Convention provides important minimum standards of treatment." With regard to the latter Thailand seems to provide minimal "lip services" to it stateless peoples to comply with the Convention but keeps them very confined and controlled. My guess is such peoples would tend towards a progressive government like MFP and not with authoritarian governments if they were able to vote.
  15. Wives of Generals or former Generals?
  16. In this case 1 ladyboy and two witnesses. Brit has no defense legally.
  17. Maybe a poor memory but wasn't someone (unrelated to this article) charged with defamation because they "liked" an internet post that critizied a Thai business' customer service as a violation of the Computer Act?
  18. You might consider the 10-year Long Term Resident visa costing 50,000 THB. Four different qualifying categories. Annual notification of residence, multiple Fast Track re-entries, foreign income tax exempt for three categories, no annual bank statements, no minimum monthly monthly, transfers, etc. Offered by the Thailand Board of Investment.
  19. Pearl Harbor near Honolulu, Oahu. Headquarters of the Pacific Fleet. Includes Pearl Harbor Submarine Base, home of 18 nuclear submarines.
  20. As an added strategy, the Thai government should stop accepting Chinese loans for financing infrastructures and allowing Chinese state-owned enterprises to be included in bids for those projects.
  21. "Thai Cabinet rejects gender recognition bill, citing crime concerns" Okay, if that's the standard for accepting a bill, then the RTP should be denied funding citing crime concerns, such as corruption and failure to enforce the 2022 Anti-Torture and Enforced Disappearance Act despite order from the Constitutional Court. Extending that thought, the RTM should also be denied funding citing persistent coups, violations of the Constitution and election interference.
  22. I'd like to see a thousand like her (clothing optional) in a Thai street political protest. More effective than a PM speech on reconciliation.
  23. Why hold back. Make it the chance to enter a university or trade skill school at no cost.
  24. Now replaced by "Let it rot." Should we? Presumably in an alleged democratic society the youth has political strength.
  25. Taiwan has 141 F-16s upgraded to F-16A/B Block 72V with 56 on order. Belgium 116, Denmark 58, Netherlands 102 F-16A/B, Norway 72 and South Korea 180 F-16C/D with 134 being upgraded to F-16V. Get with the club Thailand.
