Slow economic growth, lack of foreign investment are major challenges
Srikcir replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
The 2014 coup placed the military in charge into mid-2023 and the current minority government wears the taint of military control by its partnership with the military to block control by the elected majority party. Military influenced Senate, Election Commission and Constitutional Court cannot be said to be progressive to the extend found in Western democracies. So yes, likely in part to be the reason. -
Govt to Address Oil Fund Losses Amid Subsidy Strain
Srikcir replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Should be "the agency affirmed that the fund's situation is potentially manageable."? Something has to change for a different result. Maybe rather than rushing to spot fuel subsidies for the public, invest in more reliable fuel sources that are not as price volatile. Particularly it seems during PM Prayut's 8-year regime there was a propensity to purchase fuel on the spot market rather than long term contracts. Kind of like "day trading stocks." -
Chon Buri’s Wonnapha Beach makeover sparks online debate
Srikcir replied to webfact's topic in Pattaya News
Sandbag revetment was used at northern Pattaya beach, Chonburi province. One of the advantages of sandbag revetment is that, unlike rock revetment, it still provides an easy access way for people to walk across the beach area and the sea. Not slippery when wet. Cheap and safe but not very artistic. Does the government need people to slip on the concrete slabs and suffer grave injury to rethink the slabs? -

A good start but much more needs to be done for the MAJORITY of the debtors. Cases successfully mediated amounts to only 15% of total debtors. Importantly, the government seems to have developed a good model for getting (in general) debtors to mediation. But more needs to be done to get debtors into the model criteria so that they can be documented and eligible for mediation. Also need to find a process that ensures the current number of debtors doesn't increase as resolutions are accomplished. Otherwise, unaddressed debt becomes a "Never Ending Story."

Journalists arrested in temple graffiti case released on bail
Srikcir replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
From Reuters headline "Thai journalists arrested for news coverage of anarchist graffiti on temple" February 13, 2024: "Two Thai journalists have been arrested for their story about an activist spray painting an anarchist symbol and a symbol critical of "lese majeste" laws on a Bangkok temple wall" (my bold) Unless the reporters had prior knowledge of a plan to create subject graffiti that would make them complicit, they should actually become witnesses to the defacement for prosecution of those involved in the actual defacement. The underlying charge isn't about freedom of speech, it's about "causing damage to a historic site and vandalising a wall in a public place." Seems news worthy to report. But I suspect that Nattaphol Meksobhon, being a reporter from the independent online news outlet Prachatai that often criticizes authoritarian governance, was too easy a target for political retribution. -
If Thaskin was wise (not to be confused with smart), he could let Srettha assume the role of a "cut-out" for Thaksin to continue as PM while Thaskin avoids direct political confrontation.

Successfully asking: Biden's campaign ended the year 2023 with $46 million in cash, far more than the $33 million Trump's campaign held before the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary. Future Forward, the main super PAC backing Biden, held a little bit more in the bank than MAGA Inc., $24 million to $23.3 million, at the end of the year. -

FTI urges protection for SMEs against surge of cheap Chinese imports
Srikcir replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
You think FTI missed the "boat" several times when Chinese owned Alibaba acquired a majority stake in Lazada in 2016 after buying 500 million USD worth of new shares and a further 500 million USD in existing shares. Alibaba then increased its stake from 50% to 83% in 2017, after which Lazada received no further investment until 2022. With Alibaba's participation, Lazada made available in 2017 some 400,000 items sourced direct from China. Chinese Jack Ma Yun is the co-founder of Alibaba Group and member of the CCP Politburo. If Thai SME's want to sell in China, there's Alibaba's TMall.com. -

Royal Thai Air Force to open facilities and golf courses to public
Srikcir replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
For a fee isn't it? Like the military gun ranges that are "open to the public" as if they were private enterprises, albeit not under control of the government but directly under control of the military as if the military command was a separate sovereign entity. -
UNDP report says human rights defenders are targeted by businesses
Srikcir replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Or like the large number of State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) that were consolidated in 2014 into a SOE Superboard consisting of PM Prayut as the chairman, governor of the Bank of Thailand and prominent bankers and financiers? These SOEs in effect can evolve into political fiefdoms. https://tdri.or.th/en/2017/11/state-owned-firm-reform-better-worse/ -
Government finds itself backed into a corner on digital wallet scheme
Srikcir replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
"Government finds itself backed into a corner on digital wallet scheme" is a viable position than backed "against the wall" (my bold) Analysis of the issues is more defined for the former having four dimensions and less defined for the latter having only two (or less) dimensions. The government should embrace the corner, engage the problems, collect the applicable economic data and determine the necessary legislative goals to deliver in an equitable, fair and accountable manner. -
Suvarnabhumi Airport Boosts Capacity with New Runway
Srikcir replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
"the expansion is expected to elevate the airport's flight handling capacity from 67 flights per hour to 94, a crucial step towards bolstering Thailand's status as a key aviation hub in the region." (my bold) If many of the passengers originate from Thailand (especially Thai citizens) or ASEAN country citizens versus Non-ASEAN countries, immigration may not be as impacted as from arrivals beyond ASEAN countries. Airport authorities should already know what passengers to expect as participating airlines must in advance purchase "gates" and identify flight departures & arrivals. -

If I was a registered Democrat, ie., for an absentee ballot from overseas, I would re-register as an Independent. Trump promises his next term as POTUS will be one of political retaliation. I can envision him canceling any US- based benefits to American expats registered as Democrats.

What are those concerns exactly in terms of science? Water comes from the Srinakarind Dam. How or to what extent is that dam a water source for the local ecosystem? Granted doing a tunnel itself through the Salak Phra Wildlife Sanctuary will have some temporary environmental impacts and the government will have to explain its mitigation/- restoration plans for minimizing such impacts. But the project may provide a temporary economic boost to the area and that should be part of the program.

Thai workers invited to apply for high-paying oil rig jobs in Brunei
Srikcir replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
More like "Thai workers invited (by the Thai government) to apply for high-paying offshore oil rig jobs in Brunei." I don't think Brunei cares what the worker's nationality is versus experience and proficiency to do the job professionally. I found this in Facebook dated Dec. 22, 2018 by Borneo SR, Brunei Offshore site: "Welder - Basic wage : B$93/day offshore; Overtime: B$11.04/hour; Normal working hours: 12 hours/day Minimum 5 years working experience in Oil & Gas Industry preferably with offshore experience; Able to pass 6G (TIG/SMAW) & GR (SMAW) Tests; Experience in installation & repair of process lines using welding & cutting techniques. In 2018 Brent crude oil average closing price was $65.23 USD. In 2023 $82.49 USD. Forecast for 2024 is $82 USD; for 2025 $79 USD. https://www.eia.gov/todayinenergy If wages are not keeping up with value of crude, wages paid today that are slightly more than or equal to 2018 seem inadequate except maybe to developing countries. -
Thai Travel Industry Urged To Reduce Usage Of US$ For Doing Business
Srikcir replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Flashback to November 2023, PM during his participation in the APEC CEO Summit 2023, he sought to boost trade and investment on US visit. Flashback further to 2020, "Experts see a brighter day under a Biden/Harris US administration as PM pens congradulations" Nov. 10, 2020 https://thaiexaminer.com Srisangna pointed out that the ... "bombastic and hardline policy pursued by (POTUS) Trump had pushed Thailand more into China's sphere of influence when it comes to trade." Dr. Piti "foresees the new President (Biden) still taking a strong line to halt Chinese expansionist and protecting US trade but said it would be in the context of a more liberal environment." Has Piti been "flipped"? -
Having witnesses to an oral agreement is particularly validating. But I don't understand the issue as it's minor to write a new lease or a witnessed lease update page to supercede the original lease for another year term.

Less than 5% pay rise for Thai employees this year
Srikcir replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
PM Thavisin apparently "buys" them, in effect apologizing for giving the public the impression that he questioned the legitimacy of the published rates. Perhaps that's why Thavisin is now calling for only a 25 basis-point rate cut that would help people (debatable) that would not raise inflation further.
