Is new amnesty law the path to political reconciliation in Thailand?
Srikcir replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Just to be clear, it was not the street protests nor the amnesty efforts that caused the coup. It was in essence the royalist & military establishment's expectations that PM Yingluck would be re-elected in the re-scheduled election for May 2014 after the Constitutional Court declared the February 2014 election results null and void. The Election Commission as such refused to reveal the February 2014 election results. As I recall Army Gen. Prayut attempted to have Yingluck agree to something like an appointed communist mini-prolitburo composed of Democrats, PTP, etc. and (perhaps) selected pro-military elitists to govern the country. Yingluck refused on the grounds that creation of such a "committee" to govern the nation was a violation of the Constitution (correct). Thereafter, in May 2014 just prior to the scheduled election, Gen. Prayut overthrew the caretaker government, took control of the nation and abolished the Constitution. My point is that subsequent to the military's unconstitutional overthrow, it granted itself amnesty in a new constitution written by the military. And here the nation is again despite amnesty, in an unresolved national political conflict. If anything in the form of political amnesty takes place now, it should begin first with the repeal of the Prayut coup's amnesty and prosecution of those who torched the 2007 Constitution, followed by a reconstitution of the judicial system to assure fair and open rule of law without political bias. Part of such process would be the recognition that the Thai military is not sovereign but under sovereignty of the Thai People through their elected leadership. Just my thoughts to begin amnesty negotiations. -
Obviously not enough but compared to the US: https://www.wbur.org/hereandnow/2023/09/05/unrecyclable-plastic-pollution “When it comes to plastics, recycling has been an abysmal failure, and only 5% to 6% of plastics actually gets recycled in the United States, Plastics are nearly impossible to recycle because of the many different types that cannot be recycled together. Thousands of different chemical additives make plastics soft, fire resistant or give them other properties" Wealth of a nation isn't a factor in successful plastic recycling. But knowledge, public awareness and workable multi-recycling systems are. Well within Thailand's ability to achieve where even the US cannot.

Gold Standard for universal healthcare? Brazil's government-funded universal healthcare is available to visitors and foreigners. Even individuals on vacation can seek preventative and emergency care in the country, meaning that non-citizens living and working in the country have access to health coverage. https://www.skuad.io/blog/an-overview-of-countries-that-offer-free-healthcare Overall, Thailand should have an equal or better system than Brazil. https://www.mylifeelsewhere.com/compare/brazil/thailand -

Cabinet Extends Visa Exemption for Kazakhstani Tourists
Srikcir replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Increased Tourism from Kazakhstani - a low-value decision with minimal impact on Thailand GDP. Rather what about a high-value Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Kazakhstani that can increase Thailand's GDP? "During the last 26 years the exports of Thailand to Kazakhstan have increased at an annualized rate of 10%, from $4.09M in 1995 to $48.7M in 2021." https://oec.world/en/profile/bilateral-country/tha/partner/kaz Thailand can do substantially better. EU trade with Kazakhstani: https://policy.trade.ec.europa.eu/eu-trade-relationships-country-and-region/countries-and-regions/kazakhstan_en In 2022, the EU's trade in goods with Kazakhstan totalled €40.2 billion, a 74% increase on 2021. EU exports were worth €10.4 billion, an 89% increase on 2021, and imports from Kazakhstan reached €29.8 billion (up 70% vs. 2021). EU services exports to Kazakhstan stood at €1.5 billion in 2021, compared to €1.4 billion in 2020. Imports of services from Kazakhstan stood at €0.6 billion in 2021, vs. €0.5 billion in 2021. Translation: The government is clueless on producing successful economic policies that are almost ten years too late (8 years Prayut and 1+ PTP) and begs MPC to bail the government out with SOMETHING to take responsibility. Note - the MPC does not legislate. -

"CU and EGAT jointly study conversion of CO2 released from power plants into methanol" 27 March 2023 https://www.egat.co.th "On March 24, 2023, Mr. Nitus Voraphonpiput, EGAT Deputy Governor – Fuel, and Dr. Supichai Tangjaitrong, Managing Director of Chula Unisearch, witnessed the signing ceremony of research and innovation fund agreement for the “Study of Direct Hydrogenation of CO2 to Methanol for decarbonization from flue gas of power plant” -
NESDC adjusts Thailand’s GDP growth projections for 2023 and 2024
Srikcir replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
It's in the article. "... public consumption saw a contraction of 4.6% in comparison to 2022, caused by a delay in the disbursement of the fiscal 2023 budget due to the general election. Exports of goods and services of goods and services expanded by 2.1% (2023), a decrease from 6.1% in 2022... Private investment and consumption are expected to expand by 3.5% and 3%, respectively (in 2024)." In other words while GDP sectors for 2023 were generally favorable compared to 2022, the projected increases and decreases for various GDP sectors in 2024 will not even get Thailand back to 2022 levels of the economy. Focus on increasing tourism for 2024 is a political distraction and a miss on critical major GDP sectors that make up I think about 80% of total GDP. -

Thai security academic calls for transparency in government assets
Srikcir replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
"easily"? How would he know if not all assets are revealed? I understand that military bases may have contracts with civilians for various on-base services such as tailoring. I also believe for example that the military directly owns natural resources such as forests (see Doi Suthep forested area near Chiang Mai) and minerals. Also the military has a practice to buy high-cost military equipment such as a submarine with a down-payment and multi-year annual installment payments that are treated as Treasury Obligations (not reviewable). -
He was charged with making a false statement to the FBI while a confidential source for the FBI and for creating false and fictitious statements on a FBI Form 1023. If he had made his accusations verbally in public as a private citizen without association with the FBI, it's likely under the First Amendment he couldn't be charged. But then the House GOP wouldn't have any highly credible "evidence," namely the FBI Form.

Parties or their members are behind political conflicts – NIDA Poll
Srikcir replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
As opposed to authoritarian regimes like Communist China where the only political conflict is within the only party allowed to exist. Political conflict is characteristic of a democratic system that welcomes open and nonviolent political engagement of opposing political ideologies. The electorate (the People) can then judge freely their agreement or disagreement to the various ideologies that aids them in how they vote in elections. Repeatedly in Thailand, it's my impression that the military and pro-military establishment in particular sees open political debate as an evil that diminishes the reputation of the nation. And thus suppresses open debate of opinions. -

Read the link. The officer was doing a check as with another vehicle likely exposed near the road and was hit by the speeding car. There is no mention that he stepped out deliberately in front of the speeding auto to stop it.
