Thai actor demands unpaid fees from series producers
Srikcir replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
There's nothing defamatory about not being paid to perform a contracted service and revealing such breach of contract. Still the actor treads very carefully because of how loosely defamation in Thailand has been defined that stresses constitutional freedom of speech. -
Phuket Tourist Police arrest illegal foreign tour guides
Srikcir replied to webfact's topic in Phuket News
Likely irrelevant as they live in Thailand as indigenous peoples but denied citizenship or visas because they lack necessary documentation. "Thailand has a registered stateless population of more than half a million – one of the largest in the world. Nearly a quarter of them live in Chiang Mai. They are mostly members of indigenous ethnic minorities from the mountainous border areas." "The 1954 Convention's most significant contribution to international law is its definition of a “stateless person” as someone “who is not considered as a national by any State under operation of its law.” For those who qualify as stateless persons, the Convention provides important minimum standards of treatment." With regard to the latter Thailand seems to provide minimal "lip services" to it stateless peoples to comply with the Convention but keeps them very confined and controlled. My guess is such peoples would tend towards a progressive government like MFP and not with authoritarian governments if they were able to vote. -

Maybe a poor memory but wasn't someone (unrelated to this article) charged with defamation because they "liked" an internet post that critizied a Thai business' customer service as a violation of the Computer Act? -

Thai Cabinet rejects gender recognition bill, citing crime concerns
Srikcir replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
"Thai Cabinet rejects gender recognition bill, citing crime concerns" Okay, if that's the standard for accepting a bill, then the RTP should be denied funding citing crime concerns, such as corruption and failure to enforce the 2022 Anti-Torture and Enforced Disappearance Act despite order from the Constitutional Court. Extending that thought, the RTM should also be denied funding citing persistent coups, violations of the Constitution and election interference. -
Krabi rampage: Chinese woman blocks road, tries undress, bites cop

I'd like to see a thousand like her (clothing optional) in a Thai street political protest. More effective than a PM speech on reconciliation. -

Is new amnesty law the path to political reconciliation in Thailand?
Srikcir replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Just to be clear, it was not the street protests nor the amnesty efforts that caused the coup. It was in essence the royalist & military establishment's expectations that PM Yingluck would be re-elected in the re-scheduled election for May 2014 after the Constitutional Court declared the February 2014 election results null and void. The Election Commission as such refused to reveal the February 2014 election results. As I recall Army Gen. Prayut attempted to have Yingluck agree to something like an appointed communist mini-prolitburo composed of Democrats, PTP, etc. and (perhaps) selected pro-military elitists to govern the country. Yingluck refused on the grounds that creation of such a "committee" to govern the nation was a violation of the Constitution (correct). Thereafter, in May 2014 just prior to the scheduled election, Gen. Prayut overthrew the caretaker government, took control of the nation and abolished the Constitution. My point is that subsequent to the military's unconstitutional overthrow, it granted itself amnesty in a new constitution written by the military. And here the nation is again despite amnesty, in an unresolved national political conflict. If anything in the form of political amnesty takes place now, it should begin first with the repeal of the Prayut coup's amnesty and prosecution of those who torched the 2007 Constitution, followed by a reconstitution of the judicial system to assure fair and open rule of law without political bias. Part of such process would be the recognition that the Thai military is not sovereign but under sovereignty of the Thai People through their elected leadership. Just my thoughts to begin amnesty negotiations. -
Obviously not enough but compared to the US: https://www.wbur.org/hereandnow/2023/09/05/unrecyclable-plastic-pollution “When it comes to plastics, recycling has been an abysmal failure, and only 5% to 6% of plastics actually gets recycled in the United States, Plastics are nearly impossible to recycle because of the many different types that cannot be recycled together. Thousands of different chemical additives make plastics soft, fire resistant or give them other properties" Wealth of a nation isn't a factor in successful plastic recycling. But knowledge, public awareness and workable multi-recycling systems are. Well within Thailand's ability to achieve where even the US cannot.

Gold Standard for universal healthcare? Brazil's government-funded universal healthcare is available to visitors and foreigners. Even individuals on vacation can seek preventative and emergency care in the country, meaning that non-citizens living and working in the country have access to health coverage. https://www.skuad.io/blog/an-overview-of-countries-that-offer-free-healthcare Overall, Thailand should have an equal or better system than Brazil. https://www.mylifeelsewhere.com/compare/brazil/thailand -

Cabinet Extends Visa Exemption for Kazakhstani Tourists
Srikcir replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Increased Tourism from Kazakhstani - a low-value decision with minimal impact on Thailand GDP. Rather what about a high-value Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Kazakhstani that can increase Thailand's GDP? "During the last 26 years the exports of Thailand to Kazakhstan have increased at an annualized rate of 10%, from $4.09M in 1995 to $48.7M in 2021." https://oec.world/en/profile/bilateral-country/tha/partner/kaz Thailand can do substantially better. EU trade with Kazakhstani: https://policy.trade.ec.europa.eu/eu-trade-relationships-country-and-region/countries-and-regions/kazakhstan_en In 2022, the EU's trade in goods with Kazakhstan totalled €40.2 billion, a 74% increase on 2021. EU exports were worth €10.4 billion, an 89% increase on 2021, and imports from Kazakhstan reached €29.8 billion (up 70% vs. 2021). EU services exports to Kazakhstan stood at €1.5 billion in 2021, compared to €1.4 billion in 2020. Imports of services from Kazakhstan stood at €0.6 billion in 2021, vs. €0.5 billion in 2021.
