Submarine snag: Thai prime minister dives into talks with China
Srikcir replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
The PM needs as head of a recent new government to be honest about why so insistent that the Chinese sub MUST have the German engines. Yes, it's on the original purchase agreement, but why is he refusing China's offer to substitute with alternative? Maybe because it's really a Thai Navy issue that originally "demanded" the sub be fitted with the German engines regardless of known international political restraints for Germany. It seems obvious that the PM doesn't want to disturb the military. Again. -
Thai PM will meet with Putin in Beijing on Wednesday
Srikcir replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
At first I thought PM Thavisin as Head of the Thailand Government meeting with Heads of State Xi and Putin was unbalanced diplomatically wherein political equals meet (some exceptions such as a newly assigned foreign ambassador meets the Head of State). But the both China and Russia use a Presidential system wherein the Head of State is also Head of Government. Same as in the USA. So Thavisin would be meeting his political equals on the one hand. -
New ‘Monopoly: Chiang Mai Edition’ board game now available
Srikcir replied to snoop1130's topic in Chiang Mai News
Instead of "Go To Jail" should the Thailand edition have "Get Tortured and Disappear?" The new law passed in February 2023 and reaffirmed by the Constitutionsl Court in May 2023 (recalling the dates) against torture and disappearances by the government does not yet seem operational yet by the new government. -

Cabinet Approves Visa Extension for Russian Tourists
Srikcir replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Then why not extended tourist visa for all nations? Or was this extension for Russians the price for a Thai government meet, greet and photo-op with Putin and Xi in China? -
The passenger requested the police station. This may reflect a cultural expectation by the Japanese elderly man based on his interaction with Japanese police. Law enforcement officers in Japan have developed a "harmonious relationship" with citizens that may not be reflected by Thai police with foreigners. "Japanese rarely act on feelings of hostility in public." Just speculating, the subject perhaps the senior being alone in a foreign country may have had caused some perceived personal problem and sought out the police for help as he might in Japan to help him deal with the problem. Laying down in the taxi may have been his expectation that the police (as in Japan?) would approach peacefully and respectfully draw him out psychologically to help him.

Possibly not Singapore. Seems a high rate of Thai human trafficking into Singapore requires almost the same scrutiny as the US for a visa in the context of this discussion. It's Thailand embassy told me there's no guarantee that even if given a visa prior to entry by the embassy that a Thai woman will be allowed to enter Singapore by immigration.

Provides predictability. Any number 1-6 has a probability of 16.7% to occur with one die. That is not the same as a SWAG. Increase the of number of dice tossed in a throw (like the expectation of different flu strains) and your odds of prediction increase for flu immunity. There are nine flu vaccines in general available this flu season (no idea specifically for Thailand) that are 40-60% effective.

Thai hoteliers embrace TAT’s forthcoming expat focus
Srikcir replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Remember this previous tourism strategy:* In late June 2020, Thailand’s government approved two stimulus packages worth 22.4 billion baht (US$718 million), aimed at revitalizing the country’s tourism industry. The packages, named ‘We Travel Together’ and ‘Moral Support’, are designed to boost domestic travel by providing an array of travel perks such as subsidized flights, car rental fees, and bus fares. There are also subsidies available for hotel accommodations, food, and facilities provided at tourist destinations. The subsidies will be available from July to October 2020 I guess TAT gave up on the Thai domestic tourist. * ref. Octobrists are in power, but still committed to advancing democracy?
Srikcir replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
The Constitutional Court was silent wasn't it when the NCPO junta unilaterally abolished the 2007 Constitution and replaced it with a new Interim Charter in 2014 without any people's referendum? In Thailand it's not the rule of law but the rule of power. And that power does not lie in the sovereignty of the Thai people. -

Ministry of Defense Drives Modernization of Royal Thai Army
Srikcir replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
More than you know: "Constitution of the Kingdom of Thailand, Section 3 - Sovereign powers belong to the Thai people." (my bold emphasis) -
Let's make believe the power of this government that purports to represent the sovereignty of the Thai People.. The military (that's all branches) during an earlier (2022?) House review of the Defense budget by Future Forward Party acknowledged it has "off-the-books budgetary resources (my synopsis) independent of the Thai Treasury (such as it's own financially funded soldier welfare fund) through various military direct and indirect controlled enterprises. Such income likely is not taxed by the Thai government, ie., by virtue of secret nature of such income. The military was to identify all such financial enterprises but to date has not, to my knowledge, done so. So the government should compell such information and either back-tax it (to 2014?) or due lack of cooperation reduce the Defense budget accordingly by, ie., 30% until such meaningful financial information is provided to the House. Such action should be done under authority of existing laws and no new legislation should be required, ie., consent by the pro-military Senate. Regardless of any compliance by the military, the net effect on the Treasury would be an increase in available funding.
-
Back in 2020 I think it was that Future Forward Party leader Thanathon asked the army during a House budget panel meeting about ALL the military's off-budget incomes (ie., military private enterprises, paid public use of military facilities, sale of natural resources, licensing of private enterprises on military posts, etc.) and demanded more transparency in order, I assume, to put into perspective the army's government budgetary requirements. As I recall, the army's response was that it will provide complete transparency - but never did. Time now for that transparency.

Official Gets 50 Years In Jail For Wrongful Use Of Official Sedan
Srikcir replied to webfact's topic in Isaan News
It looks like the defendant was convicted under TITLE II, OFFENCE RELATING TO PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION - Chapter 2, Malfeasance in Office, Section 154 of the Penal Code: Whoever, being an official having the duty, or professing to have the duty of collecting or checking taxes, duties, fees or any other money, dishonestly collects or fails to collect such taxes, duties, fees or money, or does any act or does not do any act in order that the person having the duty to pay such taxes, duties or fees shall not have to pay them, or pay less than what such person has to pay, shall be punished with imprisonment of five to twenty years, or imprisonment for life and fine of two thousand to forty thousand Baht. (my bold emphasis). This is the only section out of twenty sections in this Chapter that convicted gets more than twenty years, considering fifty years as life. But a literal reading of Section 154 doesn't seem to fit the punishment based solely on inappropriate use of a government vehicle. Unless otherwise the defendant was convicted of violation of multiple sections under this Chapter and imprisonment was cumulative (vs concurrent), ie., two twenty year terms plus one ten year term. The other nineteen sections are very descriptive in the punishment. For example (and maybe more on point): Section 147 Whoever, being an official having the duty of purchasing, manufacturing, managing or keeping any thing, dishonestly misappropriates the same for his own or the other person, or dishonestly allows the other person to misappropriate the same, shall be punished with imprisonment of five to twenty years or imprisonment for life, and fine of two thousand to forty thousand Baht. (my bold emphasis) It's not unheard of that after sentencing in Thailand, that if the defendant then confesses to the crime(s), the court will lower the sentencing time. -
Israel-Hamas War Not Affecting Thailand’s Energy Reserves

57% of its (Thailand) crude oil imports came from the Middle East (28,480 million liters), 15% from Fast East countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei (7,337 million liters), and 28% from other regions such as Russia and Australia (13,870 million liters). https://www.trade.gov › energy-res... Government Addresses Rising Homelessness with Homeless Day Event
Srikcir replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Something I've championed, ie., to the district level as a minimum with funds coming from both federal provincial and district governments. Supply temporary rent-free housing, food, etc. Finish model: "Since several years, homelessness has decreased in Finland, and the current government has a plan to end homelessness completely by 2027. It means that we are producing a certain amount of affordable social housing and also providing support services for homeless people with our own housing-first model." Jan 28, 2566 BE https://www.cbc.ca › news › canada Denmark model: "The Danish have accepted three main approaches for attacking the problem of homelessness. The ideas include a “staircase transition”, a normalizing model, and a tiered model (Hansen, “The Homeless Strategy” 118)." https://english.umd.edu › spring-2012 Maybe look at Japan. At 0.003% or roughly 1 homeless person per 34,000 residents, Japan is the country with the world's lowest rate of homelessness. Moreover, with a population of around 125.7 million people, the country also has one of the lowest numbers of homeless people. Feb 28, 2566 BE https://www.developmentaid.org ›
