Bangkok plans cycling lanes to ease congestion in key districts
soi3eddie replied to webfact's topic in Bangkok News
They did this in London and it made the congestion greater than ever. Ever since, London traffic now moves at a slower pace than Bangkok traffic. Anyway, who's going to ride a bike to/from work in the tropical heat or monsoon rains. -
If using a foreign debit card, the rate is normally set by the foreign bank. Most UK banks levy a fee of 2.5% also some banks vary from fee free to 3.5%. The Thai ATM bank does not normally set the exchange rate except of the "dynamic currency conversion scam" where they show you the rate. AI Overview Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) is a scam that can occur when using ATMs in Thailand and other countries: How it works DCC is a service that allows ATMs to display the transaction amount in your home currency, instead of the local currency. However, the foreign bank or ATM provider sets the exchange rate, which often includes a markup or extra fees. This means you may end up paying more than if you let your card's currency conversion do the work. How to avoid DCC To avoid DCC, you can choose to be charged in the local currency of the country you're in. When using an ATM in Thailand, you should always select the option "Without Conversion".

Motorbike Insurance when renting a motorbike?
soi3eddie replied to bbi1's topic in Insurance in Thailand
Exactly. Either you pay for the damage or the 3rd party owner uses their insurance (if they have any) to pay for the damage. Guess who's really going to be held liable to pay? Unless you accept the risks, best not to hire in Thailand. -
Thai Drinks launches 100m baht campaign to boost local tourism
soi3eddie replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
That's a seriously big market. Who really cares what bottled water they buy so long as it's safe and reasonably priced? It's not exactly like beer or wine or spirits with different flavours! Good luck to them if they think they'll get a ROI on this campaign. -
Thai Airlines Urged to Boost Flights as Holiday Travel Demand Soars
soi3eddie replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
What a total load of B.S! Airlines don't need to be told this. They know what earns most revenue and works best for them. Sounds like CAAT just want to earn more themselves by increasing airline traffic.- 1 reply

Thai piano teacher accuses renowned lawyer of attempted rape
soi3eddie replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
In any western country (and others), the piano teacher complainant would go to the police with her rape accusations. The police would collect any evidence and interview the accused. They would then either charge or release the accused. Anonymity would be preserved until charge and the lady would stay unnamed under law. Presenting a case and evidence by social media and television is not the way to go. Of course, Thailand and their police and judiciary operate differently. What type of "justice" is the lady really seeking? Seems purely financial to me. Meaning, if the accused did attempt rape, he would remain free to offend again. -
PM Paetongtarn Addresses Controversy Over Her Father's Hospital Stay
soi3eddie replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
They need to investigate Thaksin's stay at the police General hospital - VVIP residence. Really? Most can guess that there wasn't much wrong with him that couldn't have been treated in Dubai. So why did he return to Thailand at that time? Oh, and now his daughter is prime minister. Amazing coincidence. -
Agreed. Data sharing of criminal convictions or wanted persons would be a good start. If entering the USA from Europe, the UK and likely other countries, the US immigration know if you are wanted or have a criminal record. Hell, they even knew 10 years ago that I had lost my UK passport and was travelling on the new replacement. Surely Thailand could also be part of data sharing.

Jeez, I don't see a problem if you are there watching the staff check the new phone. My GF bought a new Samsung last year. The store not only checked it, but updated it and transferred everything from the old phone too. She was able to walk out of the store with no worries about setting up the new phone. Great service!

Are flights to Thailand a ripoff ?
soi3eddie replied to mostcurious's topic in Thailand Travel Forum
Before the pandemic, I used to buy Thai Airways fully flex economy class from LHR/BKK/LHR. Unlimited free changes and 100% mileage. I would buy the ticket as soon as it went on sale for my expected travel dates, knowing I could change for free as I wished. That ticket used to cost about £850. The same ticket since the pandemic is normally over £1,600. I still fly Thai but on a slightly more restrictive ticket at a lower cost. The loss of British Airways capacity, and competition, on same route almost certainly led partly to the increase, as Thai knew they could charge more. Add to that, the restructuing of Thai from bankruptcy, and changes to the airline, then NO, it is not a ripoff but just market pricing. -
50,000 baht stolen. Should I call the police?
soi3eddie replied to Smilin in Thailand's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
Agreed. Even in private or with someone you love or trust! No good can come of it. Thais (and others) simply see cash as something to grab and spend as fast as possible. If you have cash, then clearly you don't need it (or it would have been spent already). That's the mindset of many Thais. A lesson learned. -
British Airways has a lot of older planes (especially at Gatwick). The B777-200 (G-YMMA) they used on this flight - BA2231 LGW-BKK on 28th Oct - is 25 years old. I really hope the cabin is in better condition than you experienced. I prefer Thai's B777-300ERs (HS-TTA, HS-TTB & HS-TTC) to/from LHR that were delivered new just 2-3 years ago.

Like many have said, the Thai Tax office and Immigration are unlikely to be connected if ever. Most say "wait and see". For now they don't have a clue. Until it is clear and detailed, then do nothing. How will they, "who", know? and know what? I bring very little into Thailand each year and have 800k in Thai bank account since 2018. I do spend less than 180 days per year in Thailand but, at some point, I expect that immigration will want a TIN to get the annual Non-O extension. I'll wait until required.

But if you you don't have salary but instead fiat in hand, then it will be half. If you have gold in hand, it will retain its value and get you the same product in return (rather than half). This is the beauty of gold and reason why its price increases. i.e it retains its value in real exchange for products and value.

Wish I bought earlier. Still buying in March 2023 and holding to date is a good feeling. I didn't buy for profit but for security. When I die, my GF gets the bullion. She will be happy.

Thai-panic: AirAsia flight defies disaster over denied landing in India
soi3eddie replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
What I want to know is how it kept flying with minus 15 minutes of fuel... -
As much as I love my GF, and have no intention of leaving, as things are so good, it is for this reason that I will not get married to her. Once married, a lady can change her ways and attitude, knowing that her husband is trapped. This was me until I finally had enough and divorce was by far the better option once my son was in boarding school. Leaving the ex wife was one of the best things I ever did. Now, life is great with my GF of 4 years. Very happy. Of course she wants to seal the deal by getting married, but she knew from the outset that I will not marry again. No upside in marriage for men!

Not Chiang Mai, but in case anyone in Bangkok needs a cleaning service, I can highly recommend www.do4you.net For my 2 bed, 2 bath 78sqm condo with 1 balcony, they send 1 or 2 staff for a total of 5 hours. They bring all their own gear and leave the place sparkling. I usually get them in once a month. Cost is 1,300 Baht. Used to be able to book online, but now have to download their app to book. I nomally pay cash but I think it is possible to do bank transfer. Office staff speak good English but the cleaners are mostly young Burmese girls. Very friendly and helpful. Always spot on time and call when in the lobby.

Newborn Found in Trash Bag, Mother Confesses to Dumping Body
soi3eddie replied to Georgealbert's topic in Bangkok News
These stories are so sad on many levels. The dead infant, the mother, the father and society. This does not only happen in Thailand but likely, all countries, even the west such as; the UK, European countries, USA, Canada and Australia etc. What has not been reported here are the full circumstsances. Was the baby that of the husband, or another liaison, either consensual or otherwise? Being a foreigner in Thailand, she likely would not have access to affordable healthcare. Maybe there are many other factors involved. It is, a tragedy for sure. What crime against others have been committed? We don't know. For sure, this will likely leave a lasting effect on the mother (and possibly her husband). -
British woman injured by boat propeller on Similan Islands
soi3eddie replied to webfact's topic in Southern Thailand News
Clearly not in this case. Maybe they need to install propeller guards to avoid incidents like this which could easily have been so much worse. There should be clear, and enforced, division between diving and boating areas. Reminds me of the death of Kirsty MacColl. From Wikipedia... Death In 2000, after she participated in the presentation of a radio programme for the BBC in Cuba,[19] MacColl took a holiday in Cozumel, Mexico, with her sons and her boyfriend, musician James Knight. On 18 December 2000, she and her sons went diving at the Chankanaab reef, part of the National Marine Park of Cozumel, in a designated diving area that watercraft were restricted from entering. With the group was a local veteran divemaster, Iván Díaz. As the group was surfacing from a dive, a powerboat moving at high speed entered the restricted area. MacColl saw the boat coming before her sons did. Louis, age 13 at the time, was not in its path, but Jamie, age 15, was. She was able to push him out of the way (he sustained minor head and rib injuries), but she was struck by the powerboat, which ran over her. MacColl suffered severe chest and head injuries and died instantly.[20] MacColl's body was repatriated to the United Kingdom and was cremated after a funeral service at Mortlake Crematorium in Kew. -
Soi Seven Beer Bar - where now?
soi3eddie replied to StreetCowboy's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
You need help finding a bar in Bangkok? Try Sukhumvit Soi 11, Soi 11/1, Soi 7/1, Soi 4 and Soi 8. Plenty of choice. I had some good visits to the Soi 7 bars from 2021 but the noise was extreme as bars' loud music all blaring against each other. -
You're a UK citizen. Why would you need a transit visa to enter Thailand? Simply enter visa free. Your wife would enter as a Thai would.

High-end Hotels Plan Rate Hike Amid Tourist Surge
soi3eddie replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Yes. Most hotels know their seasonal demand and increase prices accordingly. Back in April, I was looking to book my favoured 3 star hotel in Pattaya for 28th December to 5th January. I know the manager and asked to book. Already fully booked. Looked on Agoda for nearby, similar hotels and the prices already more than doubled. I understand the surge and accept it. Many businesses use "dynamic" pricing based on demand. If they didn't, they wouldn't survive.
