  1. For home broadband, they usually have an 'installation' fee that they waive in exchange for you signing the contract for 12 months or whatever. If you cancel before the end of contact, you then have to pay this 'installation fee'

I've seen on some forms that you can elect to pay for this 'installation fee' upfront instead and can leave whenever you want

but the fee is anything from 2, 4000 up to  8000 in some case, where the monthly fee is only around 1000 baht or less, it doesn't make sense to pay this fee if the remainder of your 12 months contract is less than the fee

Thanks. I don't know much about these things but the back of the router is shown in the photo.

As you say, there are four ports which must be the LAN ones, and the yellow cable from one of them is the line out to the PC (it's a desktop so doesn't have WiFi). The lone port on the left of the picture must be the WAN one and indeed that's where the ONU box connects to the router. From this and what you say I take it that it is set-up in bridge mode? Or did I miss something?

It's probably set up as a bridge mode which is good, if you need to be sure, try moving and plugging the LAN cable from your PC that is currently plugged into the Dlink into the ZTE box instead, if it's set up as a bridge mode your PC shouldn't have internet,

but if your PC still works while plugged to the ZTE box that means you now have 2 nesting network in that the ZTE box is giving out IP address and doing routing, while the DLink box is also doing its own thing within the network meaning there is a 'Double NAT' which is why bittorrent or other protocol might not work

That mob of kids looks pretty menacing. I suppose he could have just aimed for the legs. Or a warning shot would have more than likely scared these cowardly punks away. There is no doubt that today's youth is far more violent than the previous generation, which still had a fairly good amount of respect for people and society.

He said he reached for the gun after he had altercation with some of the youths and his glasses were knocked over, even in the video you can hear conversation between him and his wife of 'did you hit anyone?'

Not ideal from a gun safety standpoint, firing without seeing the target and all, but convenient on the defense trial

  4. How many LAN ports does the wifi router/access point box has? and where does the LAN cable from the zte box plugs into on the wifi box?

Normally in a router there would be row of  4 ports and a separate WAN port for plugging into the modem/onu box.

If the wifi box is set up as access point only, whereby the routing duty and IP address is given out by the onu box, the cable between the ONU and the wifi router should be plugged into the normal LAN port (any one of the four) NOT the separate WAN port on the wifi box.

Only when the ONU is set up as bridge mode would you plug the cable from the ONU into the WAN port on the wifi router where the routing and giving out of ip address duty is done at the wifi router instead.

If it was not set up as a bridge mode yet is plugged in via the wan port, when you are connecting 'behind' the wifi router, it could makes the zte box unreachable from behind the wifi box as the both box are using NAT(network address translation) and firewalled twice

  5. The white ZTE box is an ONU, which is where the fiber optic cable plugs in. the ONU can function as a router and wifi access point on its own, it is used by both True and AIS as well, the wifi signal and routing ability of this ONU box is pretty universally derided, if you use a lot of device in the house, it would heat up and crash often.... and you wouldn't see 50MBps download on wifi even though the line to your house supports it; which is why many people would demand a 'bridge mode' where the ONU box just acts dumb and pass on the routing function and wifi to a better box.

Mind you, in my Ais fibre install, I was given two box with the ONU and a better three mast router as well, but they didn't set it up as a bridge mode, only using the second router as a wifi access point only....

  6. While out riding my bicycle, often the dog would come chasing after me, water in my water bottle works great but not always practical. Since I'm out to get some excercise anyway, I make it a challenge to outrun them.....

Only that by walking on or riding away seem to encourage the already aggressive dog that you are 'giving in' to their threatening; I find that the best way to deal with them is to stop and make aggressive posture back at them, crouch down widen your arms out to make yourself look large and stare them in the eyes, this has an advantage over walking or riding away that if they decide to still come at you, you can see where from and deal appropriately and not be bitten in the ankle from the back. Although I don't enjoy stopping the bicycle every time a dog come at me, so I make a sport out of it when getting chased.

  7. Ais Fibre does run along central road, I don't have personal experience in Pattaya, but I do have them in Condos and house in Bangkok, They have static IP (ipv6) even for home use and pretty knowledgable engineers that can help out with issues pretty good. Business tier package is competitive but I don't see the need, but their overseas interconnect isn't as good as True and their signup team isn't quite organized

Within condo, at least for my case, the Fiber only run to the condo's basement cabinet and the condo's own copper telephone line is used for the connection up to your room, and the connection is VDSL so that limits your choice in router a bit, If your condo is new, it might be possible to run fiber up all the way to the room

I've also head only good things about TOT's fibre too, which is unusual compared to their ADSL days.

3BB's parent company Jasmine also owns UIH which does 'leased lines' and mission critical stuff like Cash machines and credit card terminals... they do go down a lot but they seem to have solid local presence,

  8. I thought with the recent 'new' route maps, there were plenty of opportunity to unofficially raise fare to 20 baht, like by 'terminating' the service at Klang junction,

if you want to go further north, all change. or pay another 10 baht to stay on the bus; and with the official route forcing some south bound beach road routes to detour along Klang all the way up to Sukhumvit and back down, plenty of people would want to change anyway

Anyway, saw lots of military presence checking baht bus on Klang/2nd road this lunchtime, checking drivers and even talking to passengers.. maybe private hire crackdown

  9. I had True ADSL via TOT's (But operated by True) phone lines in my house in Bangkok, a couple of months ago they upgraded the local equipment in my soi and were offering to convert people to fibre for the same price as before but with faster speeds (but looks like the price will be fixed for one year only) I declined then.....

Yesterday they cut off the internet completely, redirecting everything to a page with number to call, and the number was a sign up for new service.... after furious exchange with the call centre, I surmised that True's licence to run the phone lines was running out and it is reverting back to TOT, they managed reconnect ADSL temporarily and will try to book me an 'engineer' to install fibre instead... I've had letter in the post offering 'upgrades' to fibre for a while but in was not clear that they were going to cut of existing adsl

  10. If someone live within Chonburi province but not Chonburi city (Amphur muaeng) itself but choose to describe their location as 'Chonburi' they're being vague, if you live in Sri Racha or Pattaya, the area is well known enough that people in other province/Bangkok would have an idea where that is....

But using just Amphur name to tell others where you're from can be problematic... if you live in relatively unknown place; like once I got a speeding ticket on the 331 from Amphur Bo Thong... still in Chonburi province... I'd never heard of such Amphur before....

So, it all depends on who you're talking to and what they think you know when they choose whether to use an Amphur name or the province name to talk about the area

  11. One plus side to the Airport route is that they don't detour into Chonburi definitely

Do the Ekamai bus still do that? Since the Pattaya bus is the most frequent/decently run bus out of Ekamai you'll sometime get passengers that get off in Chonburi, which makes the bus detour out of the Motorway into god know how many traffic lights on Sukhumvit in Chonburi, granted there seem to be a moratorium on Pattaya bus going into Chonburi after 4PM or around rush hour.

Other thing is that Ekamai bus even though coming on the Hwy.7 into Pattaya could continue on the by pass to Sukhumvit but instead will turn into the 36  to start dropping people off around Naklua... or even worse turn right and detour back up north to Rong Poh... which is convenient for people who live around there.. but gets my blood boiling if I'm in a rush

  12. Is the airport route better than Ekamai-Bang na?

During rush hours the traffic from Ekamai out to Bangna could take a good chunk of an hour

But if you're in the area around Bang Na, catching the bus at the Bang Na depot saves you the trouble of wading through Sukhumvit traffic from Ekamai...

If you can make it to the Airport on the Airport Rail link that's definitely less traffic dependent... but on the Airport route, are the bus less frequent? Plus is the Airport Rail link that reliable?

  13. I've seen them in the 'Metro Malls' in Bangkok attached to the underground stations where you just pay at a vending machine, take your ticket to the barber

There are also other kind of barber where instead of a 'blow dry' they finish you off with a different kind of service not unlike a hoover instead

  14. White on black background sticker is for going south into Malaysia, there are various transcription system with the province being transcribed as well for example you might get Aa 1234 BKK

there is another, metal plates valid for Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia, looks like the Thai plates with English script eg: AB 1234 with Thailand 01 (the number being the province 01 for Bangkok) Replacing the กรุงเทพ underneath, this 'English' plate although issued by the DLT is not valid for driving within Thailand,

So if customers don't spend, even for a few years in a row, that doesn't mean they will close the loss making shop, and it means even less that CPN's revenue will get a dent.

Actually they do, a couple of Central's own restaurants franchise even in Central Festival has closed down within the first year of opening, These are brands that are successful in Bangkok, I recall Pepper Lunch, which is Central Restaurant Group's own brands hightail it out around the 6 months after the mall opened, the location is where the Steak Buffet is now

The other is Coco Ichibanya not central's but owned by Fuji the Japanese restaurant this is Japanese Curry 'only' restaurant on the top floor on the corner that exit to the carpark, it managed to stay open for about a year and a half

Another is 'Little Home' which is  an ancient Thai 'cafe-styled' shop from Bangkok, they have pancakes, bakery and Thai foods, it is now 'on the table' Japanese hipster cafe

  16. The Aeon ATMs I mentioned is in the entrance to the MaxValue Supermarket in Habor Mall Pattaya

There are a couple of them on the wall to the left, near the escalator

Aren't there also Aeon machine in the walkway that leads to the toilets at BigC Extra Central Pattaya also? or is that gone?

You've forgotten about the delays, sometimes up to 30 min, at Royal Garden while the movie reel was rewound at a Big C N. Pattaya cinema and transported to RG for the next showing. They did give me a refund once when I walked out.

That's fun, didn't know they do that in Pattaya back then too, I remember in Bangkok cinemas along Sukhumvit road before the multiplexes, they would shuttle their reels around on motorcycles, while first reel would start, if the courier got held up, the screen would go white and the house light come on while they wait for the other reels to arrive, they'd do this relay along the road with one set of prints could be shown in 3-4 cinemas along the road from Siam Sq. all the way to Bang Kapi in one afternoon

Back to the topic, even the similar 'Avenues' open air mall built by the same developer around Bangkok is looking dilapidated these days with tenants moving out too,  The one I frequent in Chaeng Wattana is pretty grim, They had a Villa Market and a Major Cinema just like Pattaya, while the only one that seem to do fine is in Thong Lor where the posh Thais are... most of the upper floors of these 'Avenues' in Bangkok seem to be beauty clinics, nail place and such that is not dependent on foot traffic.... how many beauty clinics, dental place and salons there are already in Pattaya?
