  1. If they do make easy to use apps for foreigners to use make them so you don't have to register to use them.  That seems to be very problematic with them right now.  Just entering your name and passport number should allow them to find you in their system.

90 day reporting should be scrapped.  Foreigners should just be required to provide their permanent address once and only be required to report when it changes or when they leave the country and reenter.

The Erawan Shrine bombing killed 20 people and it barely made a ripple with tourism. You are going to need a body count to get the interest of foreign countries and tourist agencies. And I just don't see something like Erawan on the horizon again. Any sustained terror campaign from the south and you would find the Thai military marching through there like Sherman to the sea.

There are several attacks in the southern provinces every week.  Yet I don't see the Thai military launching full scale attacks on anything.

Hello everyone, this topic is serious and i really need advice on what to do because my thai wife before meeting me took some loan from a loan shark. She gave back full amount except the interest which keeps growing. Now we live in Europe ( i am Farang ) but that person keeps sending her messages about the money and so on. What should i do ? Should i report this to Thai Police or what can i do about it ? What would you do ?

I would imagine that if she actually did pay back the principal amount it would not have paid off the principal amount if interest was owed at the time too.  Story does not sound right.

  4. If you can afford it keep it.  Or switch to a better one.  If you drop it and then later develop some problem and try to get insurance again you will be subject to more exclusions for pre existing conditions.

Perhaps if you have a large sum of savings you don't plan on touching except for emergencies you could drop it.  But even that is risky.

You just never know when you will be involved in a major accident or have a serious illness crop up.

40k for only 1 mil baht cover seems very expensive?

I'm 50 and looking for insurance, in-patient only, cover for maybe 3-4 mil a year. If anyone knows of a GOOD co that offers this for a fair price pls free to let me know.

For your age group David Shield Essential plan gives 32M baht coverage for a little over 48K/year

I also asked if they were interested in checking the continuation of the 800,000 baht bank deposit that underwrites my retirement extension. They said not interested, as my last extension had been made before 1 March 2019, the date of implementation of the new requirements. They will check at the first 90 Day report after my next extension.

90 day reports and extension dates don't necessarily line up.  So what if you next 90 day is a month or some other amount of time short of your extension date?  I think if they asked you to come back 3 months later to prove you kept the 800K it would have nothing to do with your next 90 day reporting date.

  7. 1) Use a service such as transferwise to send it to a Thai bank.  TransferWise limits the transaction to 2 million baht maximum and for me(USA) the fee for that amount is about $470 but you get a good exchange rate.  A problem people are having with TransferWise if they have to show the transfer as international for visa purposes.  TransferWise transfers are showing as a domestic transfer now.

    2) If you have a relative or friend you trust enough send the money to them and have them wire it to your account.  I have my sister do it for me.  Fee for her is $75.  But you can send much larger amounts this way.  You will not get as good an exchange rate as using transferwise, about 20 satang less if find.  So that eats some of your money too.

    3) If your home bank allows you to do international wires online you can do it that way too.  Expect about the same as 2 above in costs.

    4)  You can also give the Thai bank here a check to deposit from your home account.  This is slower, 3 weeks to 3 months for the check to clear.  And may fail.  The Thai bank charges a fee for it and if the check does not clear they charge you an even larger fee.  Last time I tried it failed.  Reason given was that my home bank said they could not contact me. I think they took 2,000 baht from my account for that not clearing.

Some banks have transferwise integrated into them, such as N26.  That could make it easier for you.

(Crypto currency may be another way to do it.  But I don't have any knowledge about that.)

No matter what, other than bringing cash in with you when traveling, you are going to lose a pretty large amount of money on the transfer.  If you do bring in cash do not exchange it at banks or hotels here.  Use an exchange shop such as superrich for a much better exchange rate.

  8. For minor things you can go straight to a pharmacy and tell them what is wrong or what drug you want.  There are no prescriptions here but some controlled medications can only be dispensed by a hospital.  To get medicine at a hospital you have to see a doctor there.  Government hospitals are cheap but have a more limited selection of drugs to dispense.  Private hospitals charge high prices for their medications.  If you can get it at a local pharmacy it will be cheaper. Lots of doctors that work at hospitals also run clinics on their own.  These are usually open in the evening after they are done working at the hospital.
