“I opened a restaurant in the US before I moved to Sweden to open another one. I have been treated and stayed in hospitals in both countries but the bills were never this high. I want the hospital to know why it is so expensive. I am willing to accept the price if the explanation is reasonable.”
I'm one of those mugs. I've read the comments from all you whiners and complainers. I've been here 10 years. I have never paid more than $300 for any hospital care including emergency treatments, albeit they were all outpatient. They were all at Phaya Thai 1 hospital. I've also had satisfactory dental treatments. The only time I've paid more was for dental implants, which were still less than 1/3 of what they cost in the US. And I don't care nor am I the least concerned about Thai people paying less. It's their country, they are generally less well off than we are, and it really doesn't affect ANYONE'S quality of life. But don't let me stop anyone from complaining, I realize that the biggest reason you came here was for fresh new topics to complain about because you got sick of the same old subjects in your home countries, where complaining and arguing is a national contact sport on the level of football. Wahhhh.

I also think that any economy that depends too heavily on tourism is fundamentally on shaky ground and bound to implode sooner or later.

I think the commenters here pretty much hit the nail on the head. Times change, attitudes change, and most importantly, economic conditions change. And now it's impossible to put the genie back into the bottle. (Although Barbara Eden still looks great at 92, let's ask her) I used to be able to fly Chinese airlines round trip from NY to BKK for $450 US, now there are no Chinese flights and for those that remain it's about $600 one way. I don't know specifics about the airline market within China, but if rates are similarly high, that would be enough to kill it in and of itself.

yet more senseless loss of life on Thailands dangerous roads, you can make a guess what caused this to happen - driver fatigue - speeding - lack of driving skills - mobile phone use - mechanical failure etc etc etc but the fact remains - at least 14 people are dead due to all or a combination or one of the above
RIP
I wasn't aware that Thailand was the only place with "dangerous roads". I take it that there are no such accidents where you come from? All roads are dangerous to anyone who is not careful. Wherever there is driving there are going to be accidents and fatalities. It's a statistical certainty. There are just too many people on the roads for it not to happen. But yes, the question between the lines is, what can be done to address it and can/will such measures succeed? It's up to the investigators, and then the bus companies and government to implement what they learn.

4 hours ago, stoner said:more proof extending drinking hours is desperately needed.
This was 12 midnight. So what would you do? Close bars at 10PM? If you use your head even a little it would be clear that drinking hours are not the thing that creates the behavior of these kinds of people. They behave this way wherever they go, whenever they go. If the bars were closed they'd be doing it on some sidewalk somewhere. Maybe you should listen less to the voices in your head and pay a little more attention to how the world really works.

That's not nice. Yes, that was not a smart thing to do. Or it may have been an oversight. Maybe he didn't do his homework or was naive and trusting. Maybe this was his first trip abroad. Everyone makes mistakes, or are you one of those perfect individuals who has never done something regrettable?

Going to the airport and getting on a plane is stressful ???.... I just don't see how thats possibly stressful ??
What is there to stress about ?
It can be irritating having to queue - but thats about it, isn't it ?
Stress occurs to different people in different ways under different circumstances. It's a shame that person can't be more like you. You're a true role model.

Not an informative article, they're 5 dead, not four, and who's the shooter and his/her motive?...
If you go to the source article, Pattaya News, the groom was the shooter, he had an argument with his bride, shot her and the others then himself.

According to Thai news this idiot blew 240 on the breathalyzer enough to be comatosed. hang him on the spot and set an example 🤔
Probably meant .240, which is not comatose, and many alcoholics can actually function at that level or higher, except for the driving part.

What kind of journalism is this?
Any school for journalists in Thailand?
Pretty sure there is, but the talented and best educated ones likely find jobs elsewhere. High school diploma gets you a job at Thaiger and the other local tabloids. They get what they pay for. I met a Thai lady photojournalist who works for Reuters. Wonderful woman. She was at a forum (FCCT) about holding governments accountable for violence against journalists. She had her eyes lacerated by a broken bottle thrown by police. Here in Bangkok. She recovered. For real journalists you have to go to the Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand (FCCT). I have another friend who is a director for FCCT and also is deputy director for Human Rights Watch of Southeast Asia. I would listen to anything these two professionals say, and I often do. The club is a great place to go and toss down a few pints among interesting people. The conversations and events there often touch on the dirty little secrets that we all know are bubbling beneath the surface, from Viet Nam to Burma. I'm the piano player there, performing on 8 December. FCCT has a facebook page which is interesting.

from the linked article...
As passengers began to feel ill, the captain conversed with the passengers who reported the sparks. Half of the passengers were vomiting, while others were fainting. Upon landing, everyone clapped and cheered in relief.
Sounds like it was a scary ride. Not sure if the vomiting and fainting were a result of smoke in the cabin or a result of fear.
Motion sickness - rough ride? But high anxiety can cause knots in one's stomach

Who is going to tell the author of the article cited in the OP that the comma is used as thousand separator in English texts?
No one, because if you do you will be punished by the administrators, being that it was written by one of them.

First thing to do if you want people to respect you ?
Get yourself a decent haircut so you don't look like a cheap prostitute with aids.
So you must no doubt be movie star magazine cover material, pointing the finger as if you're some shining example? Nah I'm picturing you making Steve Bannon look like George Clooney, dribbling cheap beer down your chin and belching while you type. 2nd thing to do if you want people to respect you - show respect in the first place by not ridiculing people for their appearance and blaming and gloating over their misfortune. Most of us adults in the room don't judge people by their appearances, nor do the police, fortunately for the victim. You're about as worthy of respect as the thieves who robbed her.

They should now pop down to Pattaya and check on the Indians who seem to be running lots of nightclubs in walking street and the huge number of Indian restaurants plus selling on stalls everywhere.
And in a subsequent post as you likely have done in the past you will no doubt complain about "racism" and discrimination directed at white westerners by Thai people, as you sit here literally promoting ethnic discrimination against darker skinned people.

So having a bit of a laugh isn't a positive? A little satire here and there to lighten up otherwise serious issues? I see no harm in this, either intentional or indirectly. Life getting too complex for you in your old age?

I would think that it would behoove themselves to have a sense of humor. Certainly this was done in a lighthearted spirit. Even the pope has a sense of humor, I'm sure he's get a chuckle if the same were done to him. And one might ask, what would Buddha himself think and say? Better to laugh than to cry, suffer, or hate.

Tiktok brings out the worst in people again. I hope the police find some grounds to deport her, there isn't a shred of credibility to her claim. What did she do, stand there next to one of the hookers and wait until some guy hit on her, then twist the story to her liking?
