Ive met heaps of people from those countries who know didley! They ask basic questions cause they dont know what goes on.

If Thais are so stupid why are you interested in the country?

Maybe Thais just dont care about the country you come from.

It's cheap to live here. I lived among stupid people in the USA, so Thais show me some of the same racism and ignorance that I encountered back home. The low cost of living makes it a bit palatable. I won't ignore it or stop complaining merely because Thais

ignore it. It's their culture to see themselves as above criticism. I see this everyday.

Most of them dont care. Why would they?  If they happy in Thailand why worry about western life?

By the same logic, why would Chinese, Vietnamese and Indonesians have any reason to know about Western life? They DO tend to know a lot about America and Britain, as well as most other western countries. Thailand is a great exception because of its education system.

  3. I was there amidst all the madness to file my ninety day report. The only touch of levity was when a young lady from IO came out and escorted a man about my age who was using a three-pronged walking cane. As she passed those in line, she explained :"He old".  We all got a kick out of that. The Brit in front of me said "Hell, we're ALL old and we're gonna be a lot older by the time we make it inside."  This was the worst queue I have ever seen at Immigration  in Pattaya. Just glad it didn't start raining.

This is close to a yes.

The word 'automatically' kind of indicates it is from birth. Which of course it isn't. Nurture not nature.

Schadenfreude exists within every culture, in Thailand they take it to the extreme, but keep it well hidden.

Except when the country almost erupts into rich versus poor civil war.... of course.

Rich Thais do nothing to mitigate the antipathy felt by the poor. If they would commit to giving to and helping the less fortunate, there would be less rancor felt by the poorer classes. Thai elites are their own worst enemies.

How do you know what they are really thinking? Maybe they are thinking... Ah another one, a peasant in his own land but comes to a poorer country to be a king. ;-)

More like "average income guy comes to Thailand to  make his money go farther."  People who use terms like "peasant", show their true attitude: contempt for those who are not part of the moneyed elite. Get back to your castle before the riff raff have you beheaded.

Edit - "There is also the feeling (sometimes stated, sometimes not) that there is something vaguely dishonest about my income".

A Thai actually stated that there was something "vaguely dishonest about your income"?  Sounds unlikely to me.

No, it was poorly articulated...more like "...86 thousand bath??? Something wrong with that,"   No Thai would ever use the term vaguely dishonest" , even the concept does not translate. All of the rancor in the posts by the "faithful" is expected. Thais are a pack of jealous numpties, who have never taken one step to improve their social well-being. They wait for the generous elite to grant them fair wages and rights. Heads on pikes is what gets results.

  7. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that this is the case. I have seen it constantly as a tourist and now as a resident in retirement. Thais simply cannot wrap their heads around the fact that I have an upper-middle class Thai income for doing absolutely nothing. There is also the feeling (sometimes stated, sometimes not) that there is something vaguely dishonest about my income, as if Thais have been cheated of something because I have an income that allows me to live well in this country. "Americah....big, big money...think they own the world." :shock1:  There is also the totally bogus belief that those who WORK here are taking jobs away from Thais. Sure.....learn English from a Thai and see if you'll ever be understood in an English-speaking country. These people are beyond belief.

I'm going to give it a try......they are selfish, greedy, prowlers looking for easy, selective prey, and they don't at all consider themselves to be in the business of providing a public service.

I don't even mind them being selfish and greedy. What I DO mind is refusing to do their job simply because they don't want to take you to a particular destination, They are being offered MONEY. Most working people do not have the luxury of refusing money.

Possibly the feeblest comment on the whole  thread. The concept of "entitlement" gas no real meaning here and in no way is a rational justification of what is clearly a bad idea......one thing for sure that is NOT involved in this pricing is any sort of market forces....

The idea that Thailand CARES what farangs feel or think, should be put to rest. We are walking ATMs, nothing more nor less. My comment may be "feeble" but not nearly as feeble as the protests of those who think our financial contribution means anything to the Thai government. They have a long history of ignoring simple economics and shooting themselves in the feet.
