This is Thailand and just because something worked for one person doesn't mean it will be the same for you. Almost every office in Thailand (doesn't matter govt or non-govt) make up their own rules and what is followed today doesn't mean it will be the same next time.

Dont know why you say he ran away. He was in the USA when the coup happened which prevented him from returning to Thailand. I'm not big fan of Thaiksin, but he was doing a good job. Our company had allot of projects going on in Thailand at the time. He is the one that started cracking down, getting strict on overstays and visa runs etc.

Not always true, many times I go out to eat with Thai friends and we share the bill or one of the Thai guys will pay it. When the whole family gets together and goes out to eat my Thai brother-in-law usually pays the bill or we share it.

Don't know how you can say "This long processing time has been a continuous frustration." since you only renew every 10 years, so it's not like a regular thing. From my experience and from what my friends have experienced the US embassy in BKK processes passports renewals typically within 3-4 weeks.

I dont think you wont find anything livable for $50K. Also your idea on Medicare isn't workable as typically you cant stay out of the service area for more than 6 months. You wont be able to claim a house as you're primary residence if you are renting it out. So that would also be an issue with Medicare plans. If I were you, I would take SS as soon as available. My uncle retired at 60 and decided to wait on SS to get full payment. He died at 63.

looks like you're new to Thailand, so I'll give you some advise, just move on. You can keep going back and hope you get something, but most likely it's a dead issue for them. It's even possible they met with the scammer and the scammer paid them to make it go away and they will wait for you to give up. When I fist moved to Thailand this happened. My girlfriend's sister got into a fight with a neighbor and she was taken to jail, Later that night we got a call from the police that 30K THB and they will let her out of jail and make things go away. We paid she go out that night and that was the end of it. I've seen this happen a few times over the year. I'm not saying all the cops are bad, but they are very corrupt and most of the time if there is no money for them, then nothing is going to happen.
