  1. If you're arrested your in jail until you're bailed out. I'm not trying to get into with you, but can you please show me where it says they were arrested? I read the article and didn't see anything about someone being arrested for not having a passport on them. It appears they were detained and questioned, but didn't see any arrests for not having a passport on them. As I stated I've never heard of someone being arrested for not having a passport on them. They might be detained until they can prove their legal status, but if they are legally in the country they aren't going to be asserted for not having a passport on them.
  2. really?? I dont recall seeing any reports that someone was in jail for not having a passport. I've seen news reports of expats being arrested for having no passport at all or a fake passport. I've seen reports on raids in bars in which expats are held until they provide proof of their legal status, but arrested in put in jail for not having a passport on them, never heard of this. Being detained until they provide proof yes, that happens.
  3. Wow, I cant believe you risk carrying everything with you. What if you get in accident and you're unconscious your bag goes missing. Then you have to replace everything.
  4. so you want to put people in jail because of something you believe is wrong. Anything else you dont like that we should put people in jail for? I think sugar is really unhealthy for people too, cause all kinds of health problems when used too much, maybe that should be criminalized too.
  5. but China still needs Thailand to cooperate on the rail project so China can cheaply export products from Thai ports.
  6. ha ha,, you're in Thailand different rules....
  7. In Thailand it's the management system used for the guns owned by the royal police. If anyone read the article they are talking about scraping their current system, which is a good idea. They explained that most police decide to buy their weapons (been stated on here many times they have to buy their own guns) because of the high penalties and fines associated with damaging or losing their weapon. Police can buy discounted guns through the system too, but there is no limit on how many and of course it's been abused.
  8. sorry to tell you, but racism is wide spread in Thailand and promoted by the government!
  9. would really be nice to get some real news with real reporting, I'm lost to what they are evening trying to say half the time.
  10. Why dont you just get an extension to the TR visa? Prior to the TR visa expiring you go to immigration and extend for 30 days (1900THB) very easy to do (60+30=90 days). If you need more time then do a boarder hop for a visa exempt entry 45 days (90+45=135) and if you need more time after that boarder hop then go to immigration to extend that entry for another 30 days to give you a total of 165 days only leaving Thailand once and if you need more time you can do another visa exempt via land boarder crossing. I dont understand why if you get a TR visa that you dont want to extend the TR visa, you're losing 30 days available to you to stay longer without having to leave Thailand.
  11. Come on, you've been here long enough! click the link in the article.....
  12. Hmm...maybe there should be no rules because some people behave properly.. or maybe the rules should be enforced based on the person? What world do you live in??? Someone is on overstay breaking the law and because you think they are good that it should be ok? What if they work illegally (oh you condone that already) ? Thailand 20 years ago they were very relaxed on overstayers. However, then you have all the criminal elements looking at laxed rules and then what do you have mafia types moving in, kinda like it was in the mid to late 90's
  13. First off let me state I dont support the current government! As for my feelings on Thaksin, I thought he was ok for a PM, he did do some good things and the economy was doing good. However, you talk about Thaksin like he's a saint, yes he did some good things, but he was just as corrupt as everyone else. There were no free and fair elections, Thaksin had people outside the voting booths giving money away to vote for him. Lastly, Thaksin didn't like foreigners and he is the one that started all the changes in immigration.
  14. really???? every day people did not vote on the constitution. You really think the elections are fair?
  15. understood you where here, but you said it happened overnight, now you say a few weeks. Seems we are remembering things differently. I'm sorry, but I dont recall it jumping from 32 to 50 even over a few weeks. I recall it taking months for it to move up. From what I remember it started in the 30's mid July or so, then around oct/nov hit the 40's and then early 98 it hit the 50's then feb/march stayed in the 40's and then gradually declined. My timeline might not be exact but I'm sure it's close as I remember watching the exchange rate daily, tying to decide to transfer money or wait for it to go up.
  16. sorry, some wrong info... The baht was at 25THB not 32THB and it didn't go to 50THB overnight, this happened over a period of months and actually didn't go over 50THB until Jan/Feb 1998. I dont recall it hitting 57, I think that highest exchange rate I got was 54 as for what caused the collapse, there were many issues. mainly corruption, but mainly over investment in properties with several local economies investing in Thailand's real estate market. When things start going down investors started selling out and the house or cards fell. Actually the final straw happened when the Thai Bank ran out of reserves (due to capital outflow from investor selling) and unpegged the THB to the USD to let it float.
