Slightly off topic. But I am having a long overdue one week holiday up North in Chiang Rai, and if I wasn't committed, as I am, to where I live now, I'd establish myself there without hesitation. Small quiet place with everything a healthy Farang retiree could dream of.

I would agree with you about it being a great place, but you forgot to mention the pollution, which lasts months. And that’s why, even though I really like the place, I could never live there full time.

  2. A few years back I used the dentist who has a clinic in the large Mall beside the Hilton Hotel. It’s on the same floor as the beauty services. I was a bit apprehensive as I wasn’t sure how skilled and professional they would be. But the lady who dealt with me was really excellent, and as good as any dentist I’d used in the UK, and I’ve had some good ones. Worth a try if you can’t find one you like.

  3. I remember it made a revival around 1980, with the Who’s Quadrophenia movie, loosely based on the story told in the earlier Album of the same name. The album was always a puzzle because it’s more rock than soul ... The Real Me and Love, Reign O’er Me ... being the standout tracks. Had an interesting cast ... Ray Winstone, Phil Daniels, Toya Wilcox and Sting. The original Mods were a product of the 1960s but I still see groups on scooters wearing German and Fishtail Parkas every now and then in the Summer ... reliving their childhoods.

    Are you of Scottish decent?

If you like em, let em. If you don't like em, tell em you prefer to be on your own.

It’s descent ... and stop peddling myths. Scots are just as daft with their money as every other foreigner in Thailand.

It is the give an inch take a mile! Would you do it? Seriously, would you turn up at your mothers house every night, with your wife and expect your mother to cook for a 40 year old couple at your expense?  whilst trying to support your own family? Feeding 5? Sorry but I am not some food Charity!

it’s gas, electric and spices? And one meal. It strikes me that you just don’t want them coming round because the “cost” doesn’t amount to much ... Thai food is quickly made? Two people? If money is very tight I understand.

  6. I don’t think there should be an automatic presumption on the woman’s part that the man pays on the first date. It’s not that unusual nowadays for the woman to earn more than the man. If you like the guy then at the end of the evening offer to pay and tell him he can pay on the next date ... if he then offers to pay then suggest going 50/50. I wouldn’t let someone pay who earned a great deal less than me.

Like to point out that as you age - and especially if you are a smoker or on some medication - the bone density of your jaw could diminish. I have a small denture as I have been told my jaw may not take implants.

Best thing in my life now, is finding the right woman that loves me, will take care of me until I die and who really could not give a hoot if I have a denture or not !

That is correct. But it is possible to insert bone into the thinner density area. I know someone who had bone extracted from the hip and put in the lower jawline in order to accommodate implants. It worked out very well, but was not cheap. Many thousands of pounds for that work.

  8. Irn Bru has had the sugar content reduced, so it no longer tastes like it did. Vimto is very popular in Saudi Arabia during Ramadan and it tastes much like I remember it. I haven’t tried Tizer for a very long time, and hardly ever see it. What about Tango, don’t see much of that either?

Hope they find the CCTV footage.

I wonder if at 11:30pm there were any alcohol involved (either party).

Would a Helmet have made a difference???

Not specifically related to the Op, but more towards motorcycling safety.

I made it a hard unequivocal rules years ago:

    - Never ride a motorcycle at night (unless its a local 7-11 trip on a sub soi)

    - Never ride with alcohol in my system

    - Never ride without a helmet

    - Never ride in flip-flops

    - If going further than the nearby shops (supermarket etc) on a major road (in day time) wear Boots, Gloves, Kevlar Jeans or riding pants, Moto-jacket with back protector and of course helmet.

I’d suggest never ride on a motorcycle in Thailand. Car or walk. In a car you have a fighting chance, but much less on a motorbike.

Thanks again for all the helpful replies here. My strategy is to try and use my extension letter at the right time to get enough time to hopefully complete the visa. If anyone with experience believes this is no longer an option please do let me know.

Aside from Chiang Mai University, do any folks here recommend other legitimate schools that i might try for the ED visa? Also does anyone recommend a reliable visa service i might also contact? Cheers!

I used Pro Language school a few years back. They might not be for everyone but I thought they were quite good.
