hi there
looking at going to Koh Chang in Mid November with my lady and have seen the recommendations on hotels here
Which is the better ones for being close to a few bars, but nice beach side locations
Was thinking of maybe a few days in posh resort and then moving the other side to a cheaper place, but would like to be able to walk to a nice bar or two on an evening .
Was also thinking of taking the car on the ferry so i can tour round the island, - good or bad idea ?
Thanks

Your the 2nd person who has raised this point. Am i missing something?
so why bother with the <deleted> testing prior to flying that falangs have to do ?
why not let anyone fly in, and then quarantine same as the Thais ?, would save a lot of time and money for returning expats
And why bother with the masks on the plane, if its fair game to get infected with untested people, although still don't understand how a deadly virus knows not to infect you when your eating without a mask

They still point at you to wear a mask, get your temperature taken and leave your telephone number at the desk. Even if you come in the wrong way.
It may look like mickey mouse to you because they're still smiling. But they're serious about it.
not for me they dont !
temperature yes, anything else no, just walk straight past, never asked, never stopped
When it was enforced, it was amazing how many M Mouse there was, with a phone number 123456789 !

Who cares? You’re on the internet. Between Facebook, Twitter, Instagram Google your tax returns and passport, etc etc, there’s nothing ‘They’ don’t already know about you!!
unless you have something to it doesn’t matter!there was a company offering to chip people and kept saying how safe it was.
Up stepped a computer tech guy, who then scanned these "secure" chips and showed everyone the personal details on these chips
Exit one red face company
Same as passport chips, can read these so easily, with a simple machine
Anything that is chipped, can be hacked, so never secure

It also relieves the terror for the poor scanner girl at Tesco. She looks relieved after each person passes without histrionics aimed at her.
It doesn’t stop people from being stupid, they could do it if it was a human checking, right after.
But you can not get functionally angry with a robot like you can with an underpaid store worker just doing their job.
Doing their job has kept the numbers pretty darned low, but the risk is not gone for this winter, at least this reduces the risk for the poor employees.
thumbs up
what risk ?
any numbers on people living in Thailand dying from this deadly disease ?
If your scared of this, how do you manage to leave your house?

Based on some comments here, this high-tech gate seems to be necessary unfortunately... Ah, and for the big brother guys: No need to wear sun glasses on top, face recognition doesn't work with masks currently (Apple is feeling the pain...) and the cameras aren't good enough to do iris scans at such a distance.
why necessary ?
There is no deaths, no infections on the existing population, only those entering the country.
The virus only effects less than 1% of the population, yet these simplistic measures effect everyone
If we are so bothered about dying, why do we leave our homes ? we have much more chance of dying walking out into the street, or driving our cars, yet we do not worry, or close down the country, do we ?
Asked a nurse at our hospital, how many Covid cases they have had, she said , none here or at the next large town, so not exactly "deadly" is it ?
Yes, I wear a mask in certain stores, but only because it is either a requirement, or because it is expected, but other than these few, i, like many many Thais, do not wear a mask when out and about . Look and see how many Thais wear their masks on their chin, not over the nose, which makes it rather pointless.
Just like on an aircraft, no mask, no fly, but then 200+ people then take off their masks to eat and drink for a couple of hours ,
This magic virus is so good it knows not to infect your during these times !

My worse brake experience was my 850 Morris mini going down hill in the west of England around the Ilfercombe area.
They faded really bad so it was down to gear changes and handbrake as I remember. ????????????
Sounds like Porlock Hill,
Used to have a traffic light system in the 60s, only go up when green. Could sit and watch cars coming down the hill backwards and then disappearing into the run off area. Even had a tank of water at the top to refill your overheating car !

so only for incoming tourists ?
what about the many many infected Thais entering the country, why not include them too
any figures on how many "dirty foreigners" have found to have the Covid, compared to how many Thais ?

Any quarantine facility has to meet a raft of requirements to be given that status. You'll find them on the hsscovid website if you can read Thai. Lower grade hotels would be unlikely to meet the requirements so returnees end up in places like this.
If they were placed in Somchai's Guest House and Sawbone's Hospital provided the hospital services, Thailand would likely be awash with Covid brought back by Thais repatriating.
maybe not awash, but plenty of Thais, who are not tested prior to flying, are bringing the virus into Thailand, but hopefully these are checked and isolated during quarantine .

Not surprising really, is it ?
Foreigners have to have all the paperwork and testing, before the flights , yet Thais only get tested on arrival
So you have a plane load of mixed people, with or without tests, with no separation, and they wonder why they find these infections arriving .
500 die on the roads, hundreds die from suicides, plus many hundreds of other deaths, each week, yet they hype up a few infection cases, the majority of which the people did not even know they had this so called deadly disease,!

i told my missus , if she does all this drinking, eating and lots of monks <deleted>, i will come back and haunt here
Seen lots of these stupid merit making , with lots of people just turning up to get free food and get <deleted> for days on end
Waste of money, which could be better spent on other things
Just want simple family get together for a few hours, then light the torch, no monks, no chanting, nothing .
Would even avoid the money grabbing lazy monks if it was possible

any reason why the government is inflating the deaths figures ?
Why include any death that had links to the virus, but had nothing to do with the actual death ?
If you remove these numbers of non virus deaths, the actual death rate becomes very much smaller, less than the "normal" flu and cold deaths
Same with testing. People can, and do carry this virus, and the flu and cold virus, without any effects or problems, so why test and include these otherwise healthy people, in the , shock, horror, rising cases
Would we not be better to isolate and lock down any elderly, infirm, sick people, while letting the millions of perfectly healthy and "almost" risk free people go about their lives, rather than ruining the lives and economy of millions for many years to come

You have a bigger chance serving fast as well earning on your own by playing for ATM yourself. You could simply let them transfer it into your account and hand them the cash. You could also combine that with in-store credit.
However as far I have learned, this kind of people in villages only withdraw once a month, as there isn't that much in the first place. They then do their big shopping and other stuff as well, so they need to head out anyway.
For old people, they often only have a bank book, making it even more limited. Thanks, something else to thin about and check
In store credit ???????? NO !! no credit given , too many small shops go bust with giving credit that is never repaid
Am also looking into setting up the store to accept the welfare cards "Thong Fah" so got to see how this mix would work too
Thanks again, always grateful for any information from people more knowledgeable than me

I don't see how there could be any money in it for you ... only hassle ...
apparently they pay the property/landowner for having their machine on the premises, but the main reason is to get people to call at the shop and spend money. Sit outside a 7-11 and watch people who use the ATM machines, see what they do when they receive the money, a large section will then go into 7-11 and spend part of that money. The only hassle would be the setting up and the maintenance and restocking of the machine, which is done by others.

I am not sure about the regional boundaries, but I can tell you that in some places it's larger than the province. Mind you, I live in the Bangkok Metropolitan area, and most of my ATM transactions are in Pathum Thani province, but my primary bank is in Bangkok province (near the Central World Trade shopping center). I've never been charged ATM fees in Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani or Samut Prakan.
Was I charged in Pattaya??? Been too long since I've been there and don't remember. I was charged in Khon Kaen. ????
Kasikorn installed an ATM and passbook update machine near my village 10 plus years ago. It's up a Soi 300 m from the Highway (in front of an office building with probably max 300 employees). A security booth for the office is 25 m up from that. 7/11 with a SCB ATM are at the mouth of the Soi. There are 5 villages (maybe 6 and they are more like small subdivisions) that are accessible only by this road (large Soi). I think you have a good chance of getting an ATM near your store, but it would be good to get the village heads near you to support the request.
thanks for this
never thought of involving the heads, would give it more chances

There is a good article on one man's experience in applying for an ATM in front of his shop at https://www.niwat.blog/ติดต่อขอ-atm-วางหน้าร้าน/
It is in Thai and Google does a fair job of translation. Although the article is about 10 years old, many of the points are still valid. To find out what the banks require you might try calling a few banks and applying to more than one to get the best deal.
thanks for this, very informative and helpful will take my missus into town and talk to a few banks and see what they say, or want.
Could adapt internal quite easy if its better for a machine inside, but could easily extend the roofline if fitted outside
Farmers Bank would be good, due to the farmers and older folks getting their money each month, plus the annual payments, but as you say, got to try a few different ones
Just think it would make a big increase in footfall to our shop. Why have then travel 30k round trip and spend their money in the 7-11 when they can walk/cycle to us and then spend in our shop too .
Thanks again, this is very much appreciated by a poor old farang , lol

It's not a different province, it's region. The fee is normally 10-15 baht for every withdrawal. Every bank has a list of fees on their website.
i just use any available ATM, often not of my own bank, but only ever get charged when i' m outside of my own province
have never paid a fee in my own province

Ahhh, thanks for this, nobody seemed to know the correct name for the shops, just kept saying "card shop"
will have to do some searching on the link provided
Thank you again, much appreciated

If it's an actual 7-eleven or other national brand licensed "chain store" then typically they sell contracts for the right of 3rd parties to place their equipment on their property.
Otherwise, if you want an ATM then have someone talk to the major local banks.
Just remember that ATM usage is only 'free' (no charge) if you are a member of that bank, otherwise service charges apply for transactions. A bank would only want to place an ATM where it can be (1) Secure, (2) On a service route near other of their ATMs, (3) Consistently used so the ATM placement actually makes them money.
Up here in the far north we finally got an ATM in front of our local Credit Union Cooperative. Otherwise it's a 8km drive into town where there are ATMs at the 4 banks, 7-Eleven, a gas station, and Tesco/Lotus. The local area was supposed to be developing and growing but that seems to have fallen flat and now the banks are leaving one by one.
Thanks RichCor
Seems a bit silly, like our nearest small town, to have at least 4 ATMs close together, yet non where the people actually live .
Not sure what the actual criteria on numbers use is, but i would assume a steady footfall form the 3 villages all within a few minutes away
Maybe an ATM from the Farmers Bank would be better for the villagers, it certainly gets very busy in town
Will try and get my lady to call in the bank and see what they say, nothing to lose but a bit of our time
Thanks again, much appreciated

Hi there
Not sure what the correct term is, for elderly or poor people, who, each month get a sum of money on a card, which they can then go to a designated store and purchase goods, up to the amount on the card, which i believe is around 600 baht a month
The nearest shop, which participates in this card scheme , for people in our, and adjacent villages is around 15 kilometers , so not easy for old folk to get there
Anyone know how, as a shop, i could participate in this scheme, which would benefit me of course, but benefit lots of local people too ?
Thanks

Hi
Have shop in village. like smaller 7_11
The nearest ATM machine is around 15 kilometer's away, so not too easy for the villager,, many who only have bikes
Any idea how to go about getting an ATM machine installed outside the shop ?
Is there any criteria for them fitting an ATM ?
there is probably around 800 - 1,000 people in our village, with 2 other villages within a few minute ride, so should be of good use for the locals, as well as being good for our shop
