I think I am a pretty good tipper, but I give nothing if the service is poor, or the staff rude. I disagree that it has anything to do with wait-staff being "most of the time less fortunate". There are plenty of people much less fortunate than wait-staff, and I do not tip them.

I am also confused about the chain of events. Were you connecting though Dubai or was that the origin?

People that like to tip should tip, people that do not like to tip should not tip. That said only chumps tip for bad service.

It also has a lot to do with what one prioritizes, and how much disposable income one has. If I had to wear cheap shoes to afford a new iPhone for my wife, my wife would do without a new phone. I buy my wife a phone as a Christmas gift last time, and as an anniversary gift the time before that. I would have to buy her something anyway, and I get the old one, do it's two birds with one stone. -

A phone is not an investment. It's something you buy because you want it. The best reason to buy anything is because you want it. -
I would sell out here and buy a place in the US if I went back. I already pay taxes in the US, and since I retired, it's almost nothing.

I had an onion, jalapeno, Emmental and leftover Bon Chon omelet, with a couple slices of grilled garlic cheese toast. Did not think to take a photo. It's nice to see the markets starting (from what I can tell) to carry fresh jalapenos... -

As I use my phone for banking and whatnot, I'll stick to the iOS. -
Except for what my boy's education costs, I think I could live as cheap in the US as I do here, and I could do a little consulting as well if I wanted to.
