Thailand to tax residents’ foreign income irrespective of remittance
John Drake replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
What if they simply decide to flat rate a minimum? Base it on the 65,000 per month to meet the visa extension qualification. Anybody who pays less than that has to prove it and come loaded with evidence that can be or (probably) not be accepted. That would be for everybody at the low end. They could still rupture the people at the high and have time to put them at their mercy. -

Thailand to tax residents’ foreign income irrespective of remittance

This is what your link says: "Under the FATCA inter-governmental agreement signed today, Thailand will share information about accounts held by U.S. persons, and the U.S. will share information about accounts held by Thai persons." It does not say that the US will share information about accounts held by 'U.S. persons.'" -
What Movies or TV shows are you watching (2024)

Last episode #6 was a bit of a yawner. Hope it comes around again. It was getting much, much better. Dark Matter did get me to go back and watch Sliders again, which is a much more clever series. And John Rhys-Davies is superb in every part he has ever played. Like the 90s cinematography, too. High contrast highlights the action so much better than the low contrast monochromatic gloom in most contemporary TV. -
I thought the rising ocean level was sinking the Maldives. Pretty soon only fish will be visiting there. Who do they think is going to take them in before they drown?

Thailand to tax residents’ foreign income irrespective of remittance
John Drake replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Sorry, I don't want to keep pushing it. But the FBAR, which I do file every year, is for the US. For Thai revenue to get the number, that would mean they would still have to access a US government data base. Is that legal? Do privacy laws in the US prevent it. I remember when the US embassy stopped the income letters for visa extensions a few years ago. Then, I thought part of the reason was the US State Department was prohibited from accessing and thus verifying IRS and Social Security statements. How would Thailand's government be able to access US government databases that other US agencies can't even access? -
Thailand to tax residents’ foreign income irrespective of remittance

I've never given mine for two accounts I have with Bangkok Bank or the single one I have with SCB. SCB opened 14 years ago and Bangkok Bank opened 12 years ago. And how do they confirm the social security number? Unless it is required to show the social security card, someone could easily make a mistake with a single digit? -

I didn't see this until now and asked the same question below. I thought US privacy prohibited giving out social security numbers. I did read that the IRS does exchange "some" information with foreign governments. But this is opening up things to identity theft if the US government gives out your personal ID data. -
Thailand to tax residents’ foreign income irrespective of remittance
John Drake replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
How is the Thai government going to get information from my US bank or the IRS? They don't have my social security number and my bank and the IRS don't have my passport number. And all my banking, tax returns, and 401K and other retirement are tied to my social security number. Is social security even allowed to give out my number to a foreign government? -

New Tax Rules for Expats in Thailand Spark Concern
John Drake replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Don't forget the announced "adjustments" for the retirement visas due to come in September. God knows, these tax reporting regulations could be part of that, too. -
Sounds like a cakewalk. Glad that it went so easily for you. Now, you can use ID.ME for other services, such as IRS. BTW, I received a survey from ID.ME and they asked would I like ID.ME to be applied to other government services. And then the survey specifically mentioned the State Department (passports, etc.).

Mexico does that. They protect the interests of their citizens, which is why they have a rigorous voter ID system, restrictions on property ownership, and other measures. The fault isn't them. It's the American government which puts its own people last. And it doesn't matter who is going to be elected, Trump or Biden, they'll both put citizens behind benefits for refugees and neither will create a voter ID system or a citizenship test for public benefits.
