  1. Mercenaries fight for money not faith or doctrine. If they are wiped out, should anyone care? It is the civilians only that we should care about.
  2. More loonies with guns. Really, it takes real political will to control boys with toys.
  3. To be honest, there are good and bad in every society. The Tourist Police are better than most.
  4. A few people suggest selling the property. I am not sure you can do this as an usufruct is a contract to allow you to live on the land but my understanding is, you are not the owner. Selling it would be her right. Maybe someone else could comment knowledgeably about this.
  5. Hopefully, the aforementioned documentary will have sufficient factual evidence to impeach. Voice recordings, interviews with witnesses, false testimony by Brett Kavanaugh. Remember him telling the Senate Roe v. Wade was ‘settled as precedent,’ then changing his mind after ascending the SCOTUS? hope he gets his just desserts.
  6. Unlikely his daughter could pardon him. The last time it was suspected his sister would pardon him there was quite the furore.
  7. Kluay Hom, she indoors tells me they are long and with tremendous girth, just as she likes them. To heck with potassium.
  8. Many driving instructors learned while in the army. Many drive with good discipline. The method of civilian driving here is to assume people will avoid them. Sadly, not the case.
  9. This is a great incentive for the EC and courts to dissolve parties with a chance of receiving lots of votes. I remember the free cinema tickets after the coup. No one dissolved the junta but over time the junta dissolved popular parties.
  10. Women's prisons have a creche for kids born at the prison. The one I visited was fine, clean and the babies treated well. They allow a few months of breastfeeding then the child is either given to family members or put in an orphanage for families to adopt. Either way the poisoner will be alone.
  11. Seems there was no good guy with a gun... Again. Regulate guns.
  12. I believe that when someone loses a job they go back to dad's farm and are counted as employees. No one is unemployed in a farm.
  13. And where was the famous "good guy with a gun" that we are told solves this type of situation? Hard to believe only two had guns at the wedding.
  14. A mother's love can go too far. He should lose the habit in jail.
  15. Won't that make it a democratic decision?
  16. Raw pork can also lead to blindness. Was offered larb leuat (looks like a plate of raw blood) in Laos and declined without throwing up.
  17. Always nice to hear a story with positive conclusion.
  18. Historically, no democratic institution has torn up the constitution. They have rewritten it with electorate support. Remember the People's Constitution of 1997? The first ever that was drafted by an elected assembly.
  19. All Thai constitutions mention that coups are illegal. The first thing military juntas do is tear up the constitution and prevent legal action, declaring themselves immune. The tendency to dissolve political parties that stand a chance of winning lots of votes and forming a government should not be seen as any different from declaring a coup. It is illegal. While some here don't fancy Dr. T as premier, he is unlikely to get to the position without a lot of changes to the law.
  20. While I have had a Halifax account for about 35 years, they have not tried to close it and send statements to Thailand. When I tried to open an account with other banks while on holiday there all of them said they wouldn't open a new account for an expat. Better to open offshore in Jersey.
  21. As an avid detective novel reader, I want to know how she gave the cyanide in various locations. Cyanide is said to smell of almonds, which is not hard to distinguish in food and drink.
  22. In A Study in Scarlet, Sherlock Holmes claimed to be unaware that the earth revolves around the sun since such information is irrelevant to his work. The detective believed that the mind has a finite capacity for information storage, and learning useless things reduces one's ability to learn useful things. In the case of many people in Thailand, remembering how to make food fills the memory capacity of the majority. I find it amusing.
  23. I tend to think that the longer he is in prison the more time he has to think about what he did. Execution is too quick.
  24. Too many people come from a first world country to this third world country and expect everything to be the same. There's no cheap medical care of you crash your bike and no policeman who acts like Dixon of Dock Green. Start swearing at policemen while in a cell and you risk getting "sorted". Like others I find it hard to ignore as a suicide. Whether they will ever find complete CCTV of the incident is hard to say but I hope they do so that his family will know either way and get some closure.
