Simple people don't understand after 1990, every former Soviet bloc country wanted to join NATO out of fear of being absorbed into the Russian Federation. IMO the only way to explain Trump's behavior towards Putin and Russia is blackmail. Putin is ex-KGB, and they were expert at setting honey traps, getting people in compromising positions. It must be something that is so embarrassing, criminal or humiliating that even Trump's tarnished reputation would not survive the fallout in America.
