Myanmar Junta Poised to Announce ‘Interim Government’ in July
Caldera replied to geovalin's topic in Myanmar News
Oh okay, so they're not only at their wit's end with all the uprisings across the country, but also running out of money, so it seems like a good idea AGAIN to fool some foreign governments and NGOs into believing that democracy is coming back, please please donate and rebuild etc. etc. The old play book, I can't even count how many times they've pulled that stunt already. -
Crime Police Operation at Pattaya Bank Linked to Chinese Call Centre Scam
Caldera replied to Georgealbert's topic in Pattaya News
So a few Chinese on tourist visas managed to open more than 100 bank accounts at one particular branch of a bank in Pattaya, yet the staff were totally unaware of what they were (or might have been) up to? Yeah, right... Anyone who has recently tried to open a bank account (ONE bank account) on a tourist visa knows that it's pretty much impossible, at least without some greasing of the wheels. So it would be fair to assume that some of the bank staff profited from opening those accounts for the Chinese scammers. -
Where to go to cancel a visa?
Caldera replied to Maleetea's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
You go to the same counter where you got your extension to cancel it. -
First name and last name in Thai driver's license
Caldera replied to JoseThailand's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
I've had both name orders over the years (different DLs issued by different DLTs), and it has never been a problem anywhere, airports included. But I must say that I prefer the "First Last" name order that my current DL issued in Bangkok has, too. -
Bangkokians are now the fattest Thais
Caldera replied to short-Timer's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
It really isn't a pretty sight. There used to be a lot more eye candy, and fatties were few and far in between. -
So you pay good money for a 10-year tourist visa that the minister promotes for long-term stays, and then a few years down the line, some random immigration officer will deny you entry based on spending "too much" time in Thailand as a tourist. I can just see that coming. No thanks, I'll get a retirement "visa".

Economy Thailand’s Wealth Gap Widens: Most Bank Accounts Below 50,000 Baht
Caldera replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
I'd say that's a pretty meaningless statistics, compared to household debt where the alarm bells really need to be ringing. As banks charge no monthly fees for regular savings accounts and as many Thais need to open a new account whenever they start a new job, the number of effectively dormant accounts must be enormous. -
Tourist numbers are below expectations and what do they do? They make the visa application process more convoluted again! As if a bank statement showing 20,000 baht proves anything, even if it isn't photoshopped / AI-generated. Divided by 60 days, that's 333 baht, you'd have to sleep in the street or on the beach on that budget nowadays. So this requirement is nothing other than an unnecessary hassle that none of Thailand's neighboring countries imposes on tourists.

Germany Aims to Build Europe’s Most Powerful Army, Says Chancellor Merz
Caldera replied to Social Media's topic in World News
I applaud Germany's dedication to keeping Europe safe from the Russian threat. Facing a German firing squad would be a fitting end for Putin, who spent quite some quality time in Germany in different times lol -

Tourism Tourism Shock: Thailand's Visitor Numbers See Alarming Plunge
Caldera replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Complacency, scams and arrogance while other tourist destinations make a real effort. Not sure if this is the end of "Teflon Thailand", as that has been predicted too many times. But to many new arrivals, Thailand doesn't seem to have the same magical pull that it used to have let's say till about 20 years ago. So they seem to be quite prepared to move on and go elsewhere. -
What exactly is a Thai pink ID card?
Caldera replied to Equatorial's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
It's pretty much useless, as it doesn't have a chip unlike the ID card for Thais. None of the automated/online ID verification systems that work with Thai ID cards work with the pink card, so wherever you need to use it for ID, you still need to go in person, just like any other foreigner who doesn't have a pink ID card. If I have to go somewhere in person anyway, I can just as well use my Thai DL (wherever that works) or my passport (in all other cases) for ID. I've never bothered getting one for that reason. I'd change my mind if they implement NDID functionality for it. -
Problem Nr 1 here, payment problems.
Caldera replied to swissie's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
Strange, I've been living in Thailand for almost 20 years and I've never had "payment problems". -
Analysis Quake Risk Lurking Under Bangkok: Fault Lines Spell Trouble
Caldera replied to webfact's topic in Bangkok News
Maybe those experts should have come out with that before all those high-rise buildings were added to Bangkok's skyline. Now what?! -
Report Thailand Cracks Down on Foreign Students Working Illegally
Caldera replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
I've never seen any evidence of "robust Thai educational standards", it's more like there's a complete absence of those. Which makes foreigners who want to come to Thailand to study even more suspicious though. 555 -
I've seen K9 teams (two police officers, two dogs) on the BTS and the MRT quite a few times.

Thai bar girls throwing Roman Salutes
Caldera replied to NorthernRyland's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
It will upset a few people again, in some cases foam will emerge from their mouth, and nothing of any real consequence will happen. As always with "Hitler incidents" in Thailand. Best enjoyed with popcorn. -
I've never noticed differences in price for the same products between different 7/11s, but the selection of products they stock can be quite a bit different from one shop to the next, even within the same neighborhood.
