Thanks for your responses. Looks like renting will be a good idea prior to buying and then making the call. Also re property easy to buy and hard to sell - this would suggest lots of room for negotiating price down. Just dont want to pay fair price if I can help it. The condo i was looking to buy or was veering towards is priced at 64k bhat / sq meter in Pratamnak hill, it has stunning sea views i have to say and a big balcony. The one near Big C is more like an investment/rental opportunity rather than somewhere I would want to stay.
"this would suggest lots of room for negotiating price down" ahaha you must be new. Thais dont negotiate unless a trivial amount. Make sure your on the baht bus route..thats the most important part of the deal IMO unless you want to be fleeced by both cabbies and motorcycle scum

This fits with an earlier guess. Thaksin/team may have tried to connect with BJ because they thought his flamboyant style and public popularity would be useful in any future street protests, which now look more likely. The next protests will include cyber-control, which BJ also knows.
Remember Taksin and Sae Daeng, Lt Gen Khattiya Sawasdipol, the highly popular leader of the red street protests in 2009, before he was shot through the head while talking to a reporter live.
Sae Daeng and BJ have quite similar flamboyant leadership styles.
Both Thaksin and BJ have police roots. Sae Daeng was Army.
Both Thaksin and BJ were just recently stripped of position or honors by the same person.
Sae Daeng was probably too flamboyant, having been fired for throwing a hand grenade in his commanding general's office because the general forced Sae Daeng to take dancing lessons. (that's Thainess)
As for Prawit? A man with a watch knows what time it is, a man with two is never sure.
"future street protests, which now look more likely." dream on. after 5 years of military rule we didnt here a peep from the Thais and you think they will rise up now and force another 5 year Coup????

if u notice in a country that year after year its getting more complicated and more of a hassle to met all the latest requirements to stay then why not look to at another country where this is not happening.
most countries welcome retirees staying in their country.
The 5 reasons that people leave Thailand.
1, money
2, money
3, money
4, money
5.health..broken heart
Whats changed ? put your 800k or 65k in and your sweet. Or are you somehow being targeted by thais? in which case you should look at your own behavior. The rest of us live in peace without any more drama than anywhere else.

You keep citing cheap as the reason.....its not the cost in Thailand that is making people move, its the feeling and treatment towards foreigners that is making people move.
I know a lot of people and not a single one moved because of being unloved, seriously what sort of idiot would do that? You think they are going to Cambodia for free hugs? Leaving because one is running out of money or health issues makes total sense.

Who cares, the temples and the women are still here. There are a handful here that have been babbling on about it for years like they actually have some rights in this country. If the Thais dont care why would a farang lose a minutes sleep over it.

We're not presuming anything. We just believe that a trial -with proper defense- is in order before sentencing someone.
He may be guilty as sin. But let's wait until the trial before hanging the guy. It wouldn't be the first time someone in Thailand has been grassed up to clear a case expeditiously, or to cover for someone with more money or connections.
Why would there be a trial if he confessed?

Big, big changes coming to this amazing country it's incredible. I'm not allowed to say everything, but I'll just say this.
Relaxed bridge rules for British retirees from Pattaya chief immigration officer. And this is just the beginning. Let's make Thailand great again!

I still know a few people in those positions because of my old job I’ve only been retired for 5 years and apparently it sounds like he really did step on his you know what pretty hard, in fact he not only stepped on it but he jumped up and down on it multiple times. In other words it sounds pretty bad for him and it could be worse than just a “transfer” pending an investigation, but even this information is not 100% confirmed.
What is confirmed is that he was in fact relieved of duty for cause and yes it would be against the rules here to discuss the details for sure based on what I was told by my very reliable source on the phone an hour ago. Getting relieved for cause basically means that you got yourself in some hot water and that is at the minimum confirmed that he was relieved which is basically like getting fired except in the government getting fired means transferred somewhere else until they figure out what to do with you. It’s not that much different in the United States Government I’ve seen very similar things happen with US government employees before I retired as far as getting relieved or recalled and transferred somewhere else until they could pull their security clearance. It was like that in the United States Military as well sometimes depending on how serious of trouble the person was in.
So that means that at the minimum it’s confirmed that his “transfer” has absolutely nothing to do with his job performance or immigration meaning that it’s highly unlikely that any new immigration policies will ever change anytime soon or ever regardless of who replaces him. And honestly I’m glad because I like the current immigration rules just fine the way they are, I have a great system prepared now and I would not want the rules to change.
Oh and by the way there maybe A LOT MORE to it then what the current rumors circulating around are saying, let’s just say some pretty damn serious accusations against a particular “person” who’s name shall not be mentioned because of the rules about what you’re allowed to say about certain people. I have not mentioned any names and the information is reliable it might not be totally true what I was told but he was most definitely transferred because he got in trouble that information is at least definitive. So yeah it’s definitely way beyond political. Man if only I could discuss the details of what I was told by a reliable source it would surprise a lot of people, I’m not surprised by anything anymore because I’ve pretty much seen it all.
Ha ha another friend of a friend of a friend in a high profile career with a hotline that knows what happened. To funny!!!

Highly unlikely! No matter the country, laws are rarely eliminated once they are instated. The best to hope for, in my opinion, is that the more insane ones will simply be swept under the rug and ignored.
were the laws ever instated or was it a proposal ?

I did the same thing. I noted in another post it doesn't mention BJ by name. Pretty awful translation, but it seems to be saying 3,889,800 went missing, right? Like you, Idk how BJ would be involved in this scheme or what oversight he would have in it. But this is what my gf said it's about and she said two people were arrested. An official statement is expected on Tuesday. Like I said, idk if it's true or not.
Probably Tuesday will run into Thursday and slide right past the weekend and through Songkran into May, which will have to wait until some other things are squared away, then after the ballot recount and second voting the statement may be lost in an aircraft hangar. They may rip it up and rewrite it a few times so maybe a few more weeks, then after protests calm down and a few more military coups we may know the real story within several years.
There is no mention of the man at all. Its idiotic to push it unless there is proof

Yeah. The whole thing is unfortunate for the retirees here. My heart goes out to the ones that had to pack up and sell and go home or elsewhere and start a new life at an old age because some sudden knee-jerk policy change. But I do find it hard to blame the foreign embassies for not taking on a ton of more work and manpower to satisfy Thai Immigration demands. And despite the guys hanging around gloating that they have no problem with satisfying the new requirements- it was a nightmare and life disaster for many.
embassies not providing stat decs are breaking the law, All citizens have the right to a stat decs at least the usa and oz. If I choose to declare my alliance to the almighty chicken god , as long as I paid 50 bucks and got it witnessed then I would be sweet, its nobodies business but mine. Im guessing just maybe there will be some back flipping in the next few months.. just a guess

This is interesting
"The Thai Immigration Facebook page also appeared to have been taken down on Saturday." Why? Could be a small window of hope there. I wouldn't be doing a runner for at least another month and see how it all washes up

My Thai gf alerted me of this news this afternoon when it was first reported. She isn't good at writing English and uses Google translate...but I'll quote her message here- "Yes, some news has come out that he swore with buying a car to immigration police. Cheating 70 million."
I don't know where that news came from or what exactly it means, nor am I saying it is true or accurate. Maybe signing a deal for a fleet of vehicles priced 70M over the actual cost to pocket the money? Maybe producing a false purchase as part of a huge scam? Maybe it is just nonsense. Strange she quoted a number though. 2.2 million USD. Anyway, this whole thing seems shady and I'm curious to find out if this comes to light. Cloak and dagger anyway you spin it.
That info just muddies the waters and makes it harder to stay on track. stuff like that should not be posted without a link. Surely she must have read it somewhere so where is the link?

Places to Live in Pattaya
in Real Estate, Housing, House and Land Ownership
Posted
Since Thai Visa websites inception the wizards have been saying that real estate is going down which is total nonsense you only need to glance at Bangkok to see prices are more expensive than the west. Pattaya is a lot cheaper of course but just make sure you buy in the area you want and not just hunt down the cheapest price.
or just rent, us landlords love you ????
