i am constantly dismayed at the lack of knowledge amongst Thais of what's happening in the world, or even in Thailand. We farangs can't do anything about the outcome of the elections except to urge any Thais we know who want a return to democracy to quickly faniliarise themselves with the issues and make their vote count.

"constantly dismayed at the lack of knowledge among Thais of what's happening in the world"

Get out of your village and only then will you see that its clearly not the case. The GF is middle class , highly paid and educated as are her friends here in Bangkok and I can assure you she knows whats going on.

Now if your thai "friends" are farmers then it totally understandable.

If you do ever need to replace the battery or a broken screen of a Xiaomi phone, there's a shop called mahaphone in the Chinatown area.

I and the wife have had Xiaomi phones for a few years now but I'm gonna move back to Samsung when this one needs updating. I find pictures in low light are not very good with Xiaomi phones and I want a waterproof phone

There is a new xiaomi repair center in fortune town. Taking mine there next week for a cracked screen and damaged charge port.

i don't drink and never went to bars before Thailand, but that is where the girls are so just drink soda water. I got to see some real expat train wrecks around Hua Hin. I too wonder how they function with doing any thing. Remembering to do 90 day reporting? Medical? Banking?

Are you kidding? google functioning alcoholic. I was able to do it at the highest level and had a successful public speaking/marketing company.

The best plan would be to relocate with your wife and child back to the UK. Better education and healthcare for your daughter and sufficient distance from her family.

This! get back to first world for your kids future and force you wife from her family (harsh but effective). Tell her she can go back to Thailand twice a year to be with family. I have friends who make this work and are really blossoming as a family units

5 years ago I did a 'beauty contest' of places we wanted our retirement condo my wife and I looked at CM, Hua Hin, Bangkok, Hat Yai (she is from the south), Pattaya and Jomtiem. Affordability, quality of life, close to transport hubs and ease of getting around without a car or motorbike were the key drivers. 2 weeks in CM did our heads in, red-eyes, constant cough and dirty phlegm were dead giveaways and sadly because there were many things we loved about CM - air quality meant it was off the list. In the end we chose Jomtiem and have never been happier.  Prices are cheap here as well and 10 baht buses a huge bonus.  Surprised more digital-nomads haven't set up shop here either. As a cynic one can almost believe the 'government' would happily let the Thaksin heartland choke to death, rather than make inroads into the problem. If you can move I would move before it seriously starts to affect the health of yourself and your loved ones.

Jomtien is a great choice. Its underrated as a family expat destination.

According to two eye witnesses there were flames and smoke coming from the plane in this recent crash.......does not sound similar to the previous crash.....and I still wouldn't fly on one until we know what happened.

witnesses are notoriously unreliable when describing what they think they saw. A jet "backfiring" and in flames is reported in just about every eye witness account in just about every crash investigation which of course is completely wrong most of the time
