  1. "all costs born by the user." This is the part I think is most important. Whatever is implemented I think the user should foot the bill.
  2. https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/falls "Adults older than 60 years of age suffer the greatest number of fatal falls." "Age is one of the key risk factors for falls. Older people have the highest risk of death or serious injury arising from a fall and the risk increases with age." Another thing about aging, you are never too old to learn. Other factors may however impede learning.
  3. Yes, intuitively obvious to the most casual observer, doesn't need to be said. No mention that he fell backwards. Usually a person has a protective response although obviously if he fell over backwards he may have been unable to break his fall or protect himself from harm. Even still, such an injury to a conscious young person is rare.
  4. Among other superstitions, Catholics in my childhood neighborhood in the USA believed that if you buried a statue of Saint Joseph upside down in the yard of a house you were trying sell, you would get saintly assistance to sell your home. Pretty sure the Vatican did not promote this belief. Point being other religions in other societies also have superstition that attaches itself to religion. Not a function of Thailand being a primitive society in my opinion. Irrational thinking and wishful thinking are part of human nature, witness the prevalence of casinos in nations with compulsory education that should be sufficient to teach us we are very unlikely to win against the house.
  5. Wow, sad. Seems crazy that a 31 year old would hit his head so violently from a slip and fall. Not doubting the report, just surprised.
  6. I googled "tourist arrested in Pattaya" and got the following results. You might also consider people who become belligerent when they disagree with a discussion group post; do they become more belligerent in in-person disagreements?
  7. I think all nations export these types, no one country (or two) has a monopoly on yobs.
  8. What is that shirt? I don't recognize it, one of the Manchester football teams?
  9. I agree that Omron are good quality instruments. Another consideration with respect to paying a little more is that you will probably not need to replace the Omron BP monitor in your lifetime so the difference in price with others will be a one time thing.
  10. IMHO best advice is don't get sloppy drunk in Thailand. I don't know if this guy was very drunk or not, but many of these stories start with this premise. If you are noticeably drunk bad guys are more likely to think they can cheat you and you won't notice. Also, it seems that drunks are more likely to erroneously think they have been cheated and cause a ruckus.
  11. Any minute now. Gonna happen.
  12. In the movies and on true crime shows they always say Venezuela has no extradition treaty with USA. Warmer than Russia.
  13. ??? You mean he doesn't speak your language? Or he can't understand any language?
  14. Actually, no. As clearly stated I am talking about people with whom I am acquainted.
  15. Fascinating, but as I said I was speaking of people of my acquaintance, not saying anything about the typical American tourist.
  16. The cry of the cheapskate "It's not the money. It's the principal of the thing."
  17. I know a lot of Americans who think of themselves as well-traveled. A lot of them stay in American chain motels in the cities they visit and go on guided tours to see the sights. So they have experienced Hiltons around the world and carefully curated tour experiences; often shopping oriented. They do kind of isolate themselves from experiencing the places they visit.
  18. "I cannot in good conscience get my 4th convid vaccine knowing what's going on in Ukraine." Huh?
  19. "However when he came to Thailand he could not find the promised land" ... as so many before him.
  20. ศ is the Thai character called Sala, translates to "pavilion". I think it is like a gazebo, but not sure there is a common word in use in English. Like a shaded structure, open to the air, in a park, garden or yard.
  21. Also remember the immortal words of Redd Foxx "You got to wash your a$$".
