  1. I think the issue of IRA/401k accounts came up during a Q&A session after a presentation to one of the foreign chambers of commerce a while back. An officer from the RD stated that IRAs and 401ks are considered by the RD to be self-directed pensions and that withdrawals would be considered assessable income subject to the rules relating to timing and remittance. I don't recall that the subject of Roth IRAs was addressed. I could see that one interpretation might be that the portion of a withdrawal that consisted of after-tax contributions might not be assessable income, but the portion that was investment gains might be. This then brings up the issue of how to determine each portion.
  2. KTB is majority-owned by the Ministry of Finance, so really a state enterprise despite being listed on the SET. I guess it would make some sense for a state enterprise to work with the DLT to provide this.
  3. I am not suggesting that your post was an attack on Haitians.
  4. His post isn't necessarily racist, but the attacks on Haitians is part of a long history of such. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/sep/14/racist-history-trump-pet-eating-immigrant
  5. I think you are correct. An accountholder cannot be forced to complete these forms. The bank may close the account if one doesn't, but they are not required to do so by either the CRS or FATCA protocols. You will notice that the advice from the bank states that they may close your account, not that they will close your account. But at the end of the day, it is up to the bank to decide policy on this. I think that for the accountholders who do not provide the information and sign the forms, the banks are supposed to aggregate the balances and transaction information from these accounts and report the aggregates without any detail regarding the accountholders. I think these accounts are labeled "recalcitrant accounts". The banks are not penalized if they are unable to obtain all information from all accountholders. This is my understanding, but I did not work in the banking industry. Perhaps someone with closer knowledge can further clarify.
  6. I haven't been able to find any credible source that states that Haitians in Haiti eat dogs or cats as part of their typical diet. I am not inclined to travel to Port-au-Prince to try to determine if this is the case or not. Instead, I would be pleased to consider any credible source that states that dogs or cats are a part of Haitians' typical diet. I can't find any. I am not accusing you of being racist.
  7. What racist slur?
  8. I can't find any credible source that states that Haitians typically eat dogs or cats in Haiti. Can you? I think this is just another racist trope.
  9. Trump did not make a distinction between legal and illegal migrants when he falsely accused legal Haitian migrants in Springfield OH of eating people's pet dogs and cats.
  10. Some hospitality occupations may be eligible for H1B, but I doubt housekeeping helpers would qualify. Here's an article that discusses the hospitality industry and the applicability of the H1B: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/visas-hospitality-industry-eaganimmigration-hkw9c Doesn't seem that housekeepers would qualify.
  11. H1B isn't for hotel clerks, waiters and cleaning staff: https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/immigration/h1b
  12. SBC is an insurance broker, not an insurance company, so SBC does not itself pay any claims. Claims would be paid by the insurance company they place their clients' risks with. Do some research on which insurance company or companies SBC works with and then check them out on Trustpilot.
  13. What's the name of the insurance company that SBC places the coverage with?
  14. I had the first hyaluronic acid injection in my knee about nine years ago and a second one about 18 months after the first, both at Bumrungrad with Dr. Panya. Since the second injection, my knee has remained in much better shape than it was prior to the first, although perhaps not as good as the first year after each injection. Back then the cost was somewhere in the 20,000+ baht range. My FiL received an injection in his knee at Soon Padpattana Clinic and had he not been insured, the could would have been about 7,000 baht.
  15. It is almost always better to use an independent insurance broker who works with several different insurers. Informal intermediaries such as travel agents will very often add their own mark-up which is often a multiple of whatever the regular commission paid to a broker would be. Another sector that does this routinely is the removals business.
  16. Is it possible to get "cheaper" medical insurance in Thailand compared to what you already have with Cigna Global? That depends upon what you mean by "cheaper". Cheaper can mean lower purchase price and it can also mean lower quality. Can you get a policy with a lower premium? Probably. Will it provide coverage that is as broad or broader than your Cigna policy with similar limits? Probably not. Thai policies will likely not transfer as much risk away from you as your Cigna policy. You will retain more risk via lower limits, broader exclusions and more unfavorable underwriting approaches. Then there is the issue of claims-paying attitude of Thai insurers and fewer consumer and regulatory protections here. In my opinion, taking into consideration of the total cost of risk and not just premium spend, Thai insurance policies are on balance more expensive than some offshore products offered by large multinational insurers.
  17. While they last hundreds of years in a landfill before they degrade, the manufacturer seems to think they need to be replaced after three when stored in a kitchen cabinet. What could possibly be at work here?
  18. The party's name in German was Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei or National Socialist German Workers' Party in English. Not much democratic about it.
  19. I just completed this quiz. My Score 100/100 My Time 79 seconds
  20. I made the mistake of forgetting to bring a mask when I was in a crowded area of a government hospital last month. I came down with Covid and was sick for almost a week, but not severely. Mrs. Shrdlu then promptly caught it from me. Her bout was more severe and she spent a couple of nights in hospital. It is still around and it is no hoax.
  21. I just received my renewal debit card from Chase. Chase sent it via the US Postal Service. It probably cost about five dollars or less in postage and took about ten days to get here. It looks like it costs about $165 to shave off five or so days delivery time. But the USPS's hands aren't completely clean. They killed off international surface mail in 2007. Used to be good for sending books from the US to Thailand inexpensively.
  22. The DLT office in Prakhanong/Bangchak accepts walk-ins at certain times of day. I obtained an IDP (1949 version for use in the US) there in May this year without an appointment.
  23. Yes, and that’s true of life in Thailand as well.
