Hilarious, if you took money out of the local bank obviously you had nothing to hide, as your transaction was in full view of the authorities. But you didn't wonder why the dealer wanted cash? In France the largest legal cash transaction between any business and a resident is 1000 Euros, and it might be so elsewhere in EU, for good reasons.

You are kidding, UBS charges about CHF 25, for a similar amount and I get a much better exchange rate than if had changed to cash. Now maybe all this is easy for me, as I am a good customer and income tax exempt here in Thailand. So motivation for any dodgy business here is totally zero.

I transfer more than that every month, but not in cash. This story clearly illustrates the risk of travelling with large sums. Even in my backpacking years I was buying travellers cheques. There is absolutely no need t risk take such risk. I once forgot/lost my wallet in the taxi on arrival. I had some cash, maybe 500 Swiss Francs and a credit card in one of my bags, UBS sent me a new cash card, which arrived 3 days later at the office in HCMC, zero stress, zero loss. Plain stupid to carry large sums IMHO.

Which documents need translations & notarisation? None of those needed for the pensioner visa as far as I am concerned. And it would be difficult to spend more than a couple of hours to apply and 90 minutes to get the visa. Also I wonder where you guys get all these figures from? And all the theories you develop are likely to be flawed simply because most of the unapproved applications will end up being approved in due course.

Well, if they wind down they will still have hundreds possibly thousand of people left to do yearly reporting and 5 years extensions, these would then be fully under the the control of OIs who are extremely creative in making our lives difficult. Right now, for people residing in Thailand, LTR visas are issued by Thai Immigration's Sathorn office, but they operate under the control of young and bright BOI employees. "just give it a go and see" is precisely what I did. I was matching their requirement but I was expecting them to come back asking for embassy/foreign affairs certifications which they didn't. They could see my documentation was consistent and went ahead. So blaming them for being picky and/or rigid would be evidently unfair. My only fear is that the whole thing fails due to lack of suitable candidates and that the limited number of survivors be handed back, for subsequent processing, to Immigration who would then harass us unashamedly.

Makes me feel better as 56/3.14 gives us a diameter of 18mm. I am ok now.
