  1. I had good experience with this shop. Its on the superhighway East side of the road just south of Don Chan intersection. (Near Boonthavorn tile mega shop) Choon Silp ร้าน ชุนศิลป์ https://maps.app.goo.gl/dcYoaRawu1RriVS36 They sell Carryboy brand. I bought roof rails for my Isuzu pickup. The guys installed it nicely. I noticed they were doing much more complicated custom vans and trucks in the workshop, so they should have the tools and skills to do whatever you need at a reasonable price. They also have a huge stock of random spare parts from years of building trucks and vans. So, if the standard mounting hardware that comes with a branded kit doesn't quite fit your vehicle, they will find screws / mounting plates / whatever to make it fit.
  2. the video is from Vietnam. the plastic chairs there are even smaller and lighter than the ones in Thailand. If they used anything heavier or more dangerous as weapons, the video would probably have a whole different converstion of comments.
  3. I thought of that one too. I have never welded before, so welding with only sunglasses is not in the list of things I have actually refused to do. All the other things I listed are my real experience where an onlooker might suggest or try to influence me to do it their (dangrous) way because it's faster / cheaper.
  4. The only things I refuse to do the "local thai way" are usually related to safety. For example, using an angle grinder or rotary hammer without safety glasses, electrical (the list of avoidable hazards is too long to write here), riding motorbike or driving the wrong direction on a divided highway in the presence of oncoming traffic. I think too many people here believe in luck more than risk management.
  5. which type.of car? I have seen a few places near Promenada, but never went inside. From the road, i can see many spare body parts of isuzu and toyota pickups.
  6. good idea to mention about the plug in breakers -- My Schneider SquareD CU has a label in it that says to NOT pry the tabs of the plug-in devices apart to make it easier to plug in. The purpose is to have a super tight connection with minimum resistance (less heat) However, people often pry the tabs apart with a flat screwdriver to make the plug in breaker easier to push into the socket. Loose connection = more heat. combine that with possible poor quality surface finish, moisture ingress, oxidation, ... downward spiral.
  7. perhaps forgot to include the header file that has the class definition and constructor for LiquidCrystal_I2C. or you include the header file in your code, but the file is not found (either you don't have the file or the include path in your project / compiler settings doesn't list the directory that has the desired header file)
  8. let's say you checked out of your hotel (or left the house / condo) for a day out and about in the heat before going to the airport for an evening flight. What better way to get clean and recharged before going to the airport?
  9. I close the toilet lid when I'm finished because directly above the toilet is the shelf that has the shower stuff -- shampoo, soap, ... I don't want it to fall in the toilet by accident.
  10. https://www.bangkokcable.com/en/products/copper-cables-1 Choose what you want from Bangkok Cable website and walk in to your local electrical supplier and show them the datasheet. BCC has detailed PDFs in English for all the cable types. Sounds like you might bw interested in VAF-G cable. It comes with brown , blue, green colors. If any part of your wiring is exposed where mice and rats can get in and bite the wires, you should consider individual conductors in conduit.
  11. The public openings and outreach events have been open and closed following covid risk, but the jogging path and restaurant have been open the whole time. Last year, NARIT public outreach team organized some stargazing events "offsite" to organize community stargazing events at various locations around chiang mai with some basic equipment to demonstrate. The events that I remember included offsite locations to the East (sankhampaeng) and south (chomthong). I doubt you will see stars near the city as well as way up NorthWest chiang mai like Chiang Dao, Huay Nam Dang, Wiang Heng .. but that is a tradeoff for convenience of transportation. The best view of the Milky Way I have ever seen in my life was at Mon Jong in December 2018 (Chiang Mai / Tak border area). It was a half day hike up to camp. Looking west, there was no light pollution as far as I could see . Another place where I was able to see the milky way from my car was the road between Fang and Mae Suai (chiang rai) ... also in December. Top of the mountain ... no lights and good quality road.
  12. Yes, friends can enter the airport and wait at the arrivals door. I just flew CNX - BKK on Nov 1 and then back to CNX on nov 5. Showed my thai-issued vaccine certificate at the check in counter both ways. Filled the the CM-CHANA online form on my phone while i was waiting for my bag. no one checked it as I walked out the door.
  13. Many modern electronic devices inherently operate on a specific DC voltage which is converted from a range of AC voltages and frequencies specified on the power charger "brick". most modern computer and personal elecronic devices include a charger that can accept a wide range which includes both US and Thai AC standards. Devices that typically are not compatible are devices which include a motor or heater (blender, vacuum cleaner, hair dryer).
  14. If you're interested in cycling, now is a good time to visit CM. cooler temperaures and clean air not yet drowned by smoke.
  15. Thanks @Crossyfor the rec. Found VCT 4 x 2.5mm at local shops for 38฿/m and 70 ฿/m depending on brand . After chatting with the guy at the air conditioning supply shop (chiang mai cooling), I decided I want 5 conductors instead of 4 just in case I need 1 more wire in the future for a different A/C unit or whatever. My preferred electrical shop (saha faifa) didn't have 5 x 2.5 VCT, so I got 5 x 2.5 CVV cable whose construction looks and feels much better than the VCT with only slight reduction in flexibility for 70 ฿/m. For what it's worth, the big-box retailer where I bought the A/C system quoted me 600 ฿ / m for the complete set of copper tubes, wiring, and trunking. 15m run would be 9000฿. I bought all of the supplies myself from local suppliers in CM for 5000฿. Cost me a bit of time, but worthwhile experience
  16. today this website is torturing me with ads so I cant read all the previous posts. that said, I have 3 pizza recommendations. 1. Lapin at khuang singh intersection. best cheese. 2. two sisters pizza at khampang din near loi lroh / night bazaar. best sauce and salad. 3. molto buono at nimman soi 10-ish. best value pizza and pasta good wine at the partner shop. but the wine is not good value. just good enough to drink at mafia extortionate import prices
  17. bought a new 12000 BTU / 3.5Kw aircon for new installation. Walked through with a local installer to confirm routing between the indoor unit and outdoor unit. approximately 12m long with 3 bends. Looking for recommendation of the correct cable to use that will be routed along with the refrigerant tubes. Manufacturers documentation indicates that 4 x 2.5 mm sq conductors is suitable. But it doesnt specify whether it should be solid / stranded or jacketed in a particular material. Do people use NM / VKF / Romex cable for this purpose? Or something else specific for routing alongside refrigerant tubing? If I don't buy the "correct" cable, I have a feeling the installer will run 4 THW wires and use lots of tape. Installation is 80km outside Chiang Mai, and local electrical shops out there often don't have much inventory. I am in Chiang Mai city and familiar with many local suppliers, so I should be able to find it at one of the bigger electrical supply shops. Just need a more specific part name / number. Not too sensitive to cost on this one. The routing will make this installation difficult to fix later, so i prefer to buy "the best" once and not have to fix it later. Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated.
  18. I usually see pickup trucks and vans overturned .. not small passenger cars. A lot of the pickups are modified to carry bigger / heavier loads than intended by the manufacturer, and then things go off balance.
  19. Excellent news! Thanks for the links. Does anyone know if they will give this Pfizer vaccine to people (me) who have already had sinovac + astra zeneca? I'm a US citizen if that makes any difference. I've seen cocktail recipes from the private hospital selling Moderna that says Moderna is ok 3 months after a sinovac + Astra combo ... but who knows when / if it will actually arrive and be available.
  20. exactly. Convenient for the farms that are all downhill from the mountain. Not so convenient for the residential village that has insufficient stormwater drainage. Thinking optimistically, the UNESCO recognition could bring some infrastructure improvements to the village surrounding the cave to support the increased tourists / traffic and reduce negative impact of waste that will otherwise be disposed / burned locally.
  21. I enjoy reading about everyone's situations and definitions of "privacy". I am of the opinion that you will be challenged to find any place that perfectly suits your needs every day - so perhaps split your time between 2 places. I live in a decent apartment in Chiang Mai city on weekdays, and often weekends at GF's hometown house about 80 km North. Both have their benefits and annoyances. In the city apartment, no one cares when i come and go or where I am going, etc. But, I can see across the courtyard into other people's windows. Nothing much exciting. Can't hear the sounds of nature though. Nor see the stars because the reflections of city lights off the night sky clouds (mostly the giant LED screens outside Maya shopping mall spoil it). When I go to the village, all the sounds of nature, dark skies with stars, rain and morning fog from Chiang Dao mountain. Beautiful place. Until you add the barking dogs, angle grinder cutting metal, people burning things, nosey neighbors, usual village stuff. Never had a problem with security / theft in either place. Despite the village having far lower population density than the city, I feel that i have more privacy in the city apartment because people have social barriers that don't exist in the village where "everyone knows everyone"
  22. Interesting that you mention your backup power supply allows you to use wifi. from which internet service provider? The reason I ask is because where I am now North of Chiang Mai, power drops out without surprise in heavy rain or wind same as elswehere in Thailand ... but AIS mobile internet still works. The nearest tower is 200m away from me. How do AIS / True keep their towers online when the mains supply is so inconsistent. I don't see any diesel generator or large battery storage enclosures near the tower.
  23. does "died" mean the battery doesn't hold a charge? or something else?
  24. nice find! The radio telescope is a few km away. easy enough to find on google maps bu searching "national radio telescope". Also near by is a goat farm where they produce delicious fresh milk and have it for sale late morning to early afternoon.
