When was the last time foam has been used for a large commercial aircraft? Foam reduces the coefficient of friction. It is no different than water on a road surface. The goal is to maximize the braking so that the aircraft will stop. Creating a slick surface does the opposite. I offer the following opinion from Boeing from 2022, that notes that the practice has not been recommended since 1987; The procedure of foaming runways was previously done extensively in the military environment and occasionally for commercial aircraft. However, the newer types of foam are not suitable for use in this operation and this procedure currently is not widely used. The FAA, in 1987, withdrew Advisory Circular 150/500-4 dated 12/21/66 and titled Foaming of Runways and has no plans to recommend this procedure in the future Boeing Fire Department Attn: J.R. Hudgins, Assistant Chief – Training & Safety

Nothing annoys me more than ignorant speculation. No it is not SOP to foam a runway. Do not rely on movie dramas for information. Again with the foam. Where have you been for the past 30 years? Fire following a crash occurs because of fuel leaks. If the aircraft has low fuel or has emptied its tanks or used up fuel, the fire hazard is reduced. If the aircraft came down as quickly as it did, it is because the pilots believed that they had to descend quickly. It is most likely that the pilots learned of the landing gear malfunction too late or did not respond appropriately with a go around and their checklists. The tarmac length was more than adequate to handle a B737-800. Basic specs require 1600m. The runway length at the airport is 2800m. There was no need to divert, assuming that the pilots were even aware of the malfunction or had done their checklists. Pilot error occurs in the Korean aviation industry. Until the investigation is complete no one knows what happened.

There is a double standard playing out. Musk and his smarmy sidekick Vivek bemoan the US educational system and yet, they are opposed to properly funding education and wish to abolish the Department of Education. Neither of the two has made significant contributions to education in the USA. The Gates and Clinton Foundations have. The Walton and Koch foundations have. In fact they have done more for bimedical and production engineering R&D than Musk and Vivek have. I give Trump credit for being honest. I disagree with him, but on this, he's not running away or pretending he does not exploit the visas. The tech industry loves these visas because they can hold the visa over the heads of the workers and pay them less than US nationals. Indians will accept living 5 in a room with only a fan. They will accept working longer hours. Their productivity may be no better than US nationals, but they will accept the abuse if they can get a green card and be able to bring 20 family members over.

Israeli military loosened rules of engagement at start of Gaza war
Patong2021 replied to simple1's topic in The War in Israel
The RAF strategy forced the Luftwaffe to turn to defensive measures, away from their savage and ruthless bombing of civilian targets in England. You are applying your 2024 western sensitivities to a barbaric conflict of almost a century ago. The English strategy of dropping leaflets over German cities did not work very well did it? What's next, the death camps were holiday camps for errant ne'er do wells? -

Israeli military loosened rules of engagement at start of Gaza war

No ,he did not question the morality of England's area bombing. Sir Winston posed a rhetorical question when he was said to have remarked; "Are we beasts? Are we taking this too far? This was in June 1943 after viewing the films of the aftermath of the air campaign on the German industrial heartland of the Ruhr. England had long refrained from area bombing, but was forced into it by the barbarism of the Luftwaffe targeting of England. and before that Europe. The PM was haunted by Europe's failure to intervene in Austria and Czechoslavakia as Germany expanded and became more aggressive. He had understood that those failures enabled the Polish invasion and set the stage for Germany to keep going. It is very similar to how the west has managed the aggressive Iranian state, with European appeasement front and center. The tolerance of sanction breakers such as Turkey, India and even the Europeans themselves is similar to the nations like Sweden and Switzerland who enabled the nazis. He was no fool and had understood from the early days that contingency plans had to be made to prepare against the. Reich's brutality. Multiple historians have highlighted these plans particularly the response that was needed if the Germans used poison gas. He also stated that "Hitler and his Nazi gang have sown the wind; let them reap the whirlwind." This was after the Germans had targeted civilians and wiped out non military targets such as Warsaw and other Polish cities. Speech of 30 December 1941, from Charles Eade, ed., The Unrelenting Struggle: War Speeches by the Right Hon. Winston S. Churchill (London: Cassell, 1942), see pp. 343-345. And on and on it went. Yes, the Israeli response has been intense and yes it upsets western sensitivities. However, the Israeli response is mild and restrained compared to how the arabs, farsis and Turks wage their wars. Iraq used poison gas on Iran. Syria used chemical weapons on its own people and dropped barrel bombs on civilian areas. Hezbollah aided and abetted the mass murder of Syrians . Iran terrorizes populations with torture, sexual violence and public executions. Turkey has carpet bombed Kurds in Syria. Hezbollah hid its artillery in Lebanese residential areas. Hamas did similar. Hospitals and schools became defacto military bases. You wish to apply western values to a culture that is not western. Israel understands the Arab mentality. You must crush and destroy the enemy and then offer peace. This is how it was done with Egypt and Jordan. The Arabs see compassion and restraint as weakness. They respect the masculine male. Don't think for a minute that any Arab nation or its leadership has respect for the Palestinians. They are the regions perpetual crybabies who have rebuffed multiple offers of a cessation of hostilities. If they were serious now, the Gaza war could have ended long ago. Instead the Hamas leadership, safe in their luxury villas of Qatar keep the war going. Hamas has death squads goiing around now executing dissenters. The videos have been leaking and are all over IG. They are dressed up in UN supplied HazMat suits and making a display of their killings. Not a word of protest from anyone in the west. It is no different than what we are seeing now that Assad is gone with the torture chambers of Syria. No one is asking how and why Hezbollah, Russia and Iran supported such evil. -
Reform UK Surpasses Conservative Party Membership in Landmark Shift
Patong2021 replied to Social Media's topic in World News
The Conservative party will adapt, or it will perish. I expect it will adapt and it will be within the next year as its new leader puts her stamp on policy. Once this is done, Reform will fade. People migrated to Reform because they had nowhere else to go. -
Israeli military loosened rules of engagement at start of Gaza war
Patong2021 replied to simple1's topic in The War in Israel
This is a historical inaccuracy made from the perspective of current political sensitivities. The "civilians" were actively involved in the war effort. They were willing participants in a military regime. Children as young as 10 were carrying weapons. Others were manning AA guns, and working in logistics. Females of all ages were employed as searchlight operators, of radio operators, drivers, logistics clerks. There were no non combatant civilians in the Third Reich. Hamas shares that similarity. The difference though is that the Third Reich did not use their families as shields and did not intentionally sacrifice their own children for publicity opportunities. -

Common sense and based upon what happened in Canada. Learn from the social disaster north of the border. Canadian business lobby made the same claims as Musk. they were disproven. And the Canadian busienss lobby still is making the same claim. All those "students" were going to improve Canadian academic quality, and improve productivity. Instead they gamed the immigration system claiming refugee status, and collecting benefits. Those who worked were exploited by the hospitality sector. Go into a Tim Horton's today and you need to speak Urdu if you want service. Almost all of the big truck crash tragedies are because of Punjabi drivers imported by Punjabi controlled trucking firms who hired unqualified drivers. They were all supposed to be educated people. Now it turns out, Canada has become a center for organized crime with Punjabi crime syndicates running wild. That's the reality of Musk's promise.

On the US nationals, particularly the taxpayers. An influx of low paid workers will screw up the US economy long term. Theyu won't pay taxes sufficient to cover the social services they will receive. They will compete for low cost housing with locals. they will jam the local healthcare networks resulting in delays of access to locals. They will jam the roads etc.
-
Musk is looking after Musk's best interest. To understand the damage that Musk will cause if he is allowed to do what he wants on this issue, look at Canada. Nearly 5 million temporary Canadians most of whom are from India. They have disrupted housing, healthcare and social services taking up places while giving little back in taxes. They have imported theirown political disputes and created havoc on the roads. All because some business interests want cheap labour. If the US has a shortage of qualified people, train US students. Pay them living wages. Offer them training. That's what Trump promised. Now it is time to deliver.

Civilians? Seriously? Your claim would mean that there are no Hamas military personnel in that number. Who do you think has been firing missiles and rockets at Israel? The civilans you claim are the same people who are responsible for Hamas military logistics, ordinance support and supply, operating command and control centers, and Hamas military transport. Hamas has a network of supply that relies on the use of boys aged 10-16. They carry the munitions and other ordinance used.Often the munitions explode and they are injured. Their deaths are registered as civilian deaths. Your 45,000 number requires that one ignore the tens of thousands of military deaths and the tens of thousands of support personnel deaths. Others who have died were Hamas family members who were used as. human shields and who were intended to die as part of the Hamas strategy.

Ever drive some of them? The Suzuki Samurai was a classic 1980's nightmare. The early Japanese models were tiny and underpowered and had rust and corrosion issues. The Japanese sorted that all out in the 1980's and 1990's . They did it through innovation and their own engineering. The Chinese stealth fighter we see today is based upon industrial espionage and general theft of proprietary information. I hope the US let the Chinese also steal some inherent intentional defects or signature deficiencies.

Three Palestinian babies freeze to death in Gaza as winter sets in
Patong2021 replied to webfact's topic in World News
No supporting evidence, no corroborating documentation. Only the claim of "Gaza Health Authority" spokesperson. In a place where women pump out babies like chickens lay eggs, there are going to be infant deaths. People are often born with serious defects, a problem exacerbated when 40%+ of the population is the product of inbreeding when cousins marry each other. -
Actions have consequences. What is your alternative? Think it through. MPox, Ebola are just some of the infectious diseases which have entered the USA and Europe. How would you control and prevent the diseases from spreading? WHO is the only entity which sends people to keep the diseases from spreading. And before you say travel restrictions, consider the practicality of enforcement. Near impossible. UK has thousands of nationals who visit high risk regions and who return. Thousands more visit places like Thailand and are exposed to people who are infected. That is how much of the covid infection came to the UK.

Deterioration of Dining Quality and Experience

Thank you for the observations and comments. Ogen has moved up the road, into a new and much fancier location. It also slightly rebranded as Mediterranean Food. I found the food at the old place a bit too salty, but otherwise interesting. Haven't tried the new location. I received food poisoning from a Thai curry at a midscale restaurant that I frequented for 2 years straight without problem. Once or twice, fish was off, but otherwise, reliable midlevel Thai restaurant. Starbucks has consistency. It's bakery items are produced to exacting quality standards. Despite comments to the contrary, the baked goods do not rely on chemicals and additives. I purchased a piece of apple pie the other day. It was mostly apples and it was good. It was not a palm oil palm oil crust. The croissants are made with butter. The blueberry muffin has real blueberries. There are several "French" and "Japanese" style bakeries in the 2 shopping malls here. The products look good, but the quality is generic western grocery chain. I have tried 3 different European bakeries, one is French and the either 2 German. Quality is decent, but it is a hastle to have to make a special trip to the bakery , especially since I can't consume a loaf in a day or two like a normal family does. I go to the Europeans because I don't want sugary bread, and like a good rye or whole grain. I will be back to eating more salads and fruit at home again.
