Cigna Global is usually best bet for expat policy over age 80, could consider either their Silver Plan and Close Care Plans. You should get through a broker, very important as they will help with claims afterwards and Cigna especially can be time consuming to deal with (nothing sinister - just ditsy/inefficient admin staff) . Also - extremely important - they can help get the necessary certifications for re-entry which can otherwise be hard to obtain from most insurers. Note that the new re-entry rules are very new and it is not yet clear what type of documentation will be required/accepted but this should become more apparent in the coming month or two.

Cigna Silver Plan, even with a large deductible (excess), will cost most than 200K  a year. You can see different rates under different deductible  and copay scenarios online here:

    https://www.cignaglobal.com/quote/pages/quote/PersonalInformationLiteV4.html?new=true

Warning: do nto enter your true email and phone number or you will be hounded by agents.

Close Care premiums should be less bu you can't get quotes online, ask broker.

Other alternative is to get a travel policy for the time interval you will be stamped back in for on return. (Same as the date on your current permission to stay or on your re-entry permit). While this will work for re-entry requirements, it may come to pass that insurance will be required for annual extensions of stay at which point travel policy is not a feasible approach.

For broker, I recommend AA Insurance  www.aainsure.net

Offices in Pattaya and Hua Hin or can do it all online

As always Sheryl a very helpful and informative reply.  Much appreciated.

  2. it now appears that in order  enter Thailand I will require General Medical coverage of a minimum amount of US$50000 which also includes Covid-19.

I was planning on going to visit my family in 2022 but in the absence of medical coverage I  would not be able to return to my wife and home in Thailand.   In the past any hospital treatment I have required has always been self-financed.

i now have to find Insurance if I want to execute my visit but so far I am unable to find any company that would insure me at my age.

Currently I have no underlying medical conditions and would expect to pay in the regionof THB 200K annually.

Does any one have knowledge of a plan that would accept me?

  3. Early in October I tranferred money frommy UKaccount to the Bangkok Bank.  I chose option 11 (I think thats the one)  'Money required forLong term stay in Thailand'   When it arrived it had come as an inter bank transfer.   I wrote to Wisewho said 'not ourproblem take it upwith the Bangkok Bank'.   As you might expect(or not) Bangkok Banksaid they could not help.

So I sent another transfer today but before sending it I called Wise and said it had to come as an Internaional transfer.  After about 20 minutes explaining what I required, I was told 'okay ,got it, I will make sure this happens.

Just checked my Bangkok Bank account and the money is there AS A SMART TRANSFER!!!!  Luckey for  me I keep 800,000THB in the account all year.

    So it's goodbye Wise.

  4. I have found an Insurance policy ( NotTGIA)that is available to the age range 1-99 years at a reasonable cost that  meets the $1,00,000, however there is a condition that the first 14days is a 'wait time'

I am sure the individual Embassies/Immigraation officials would nt accept such a policy, but would it be acceptable if I commenced the policy 14 days  before the arrival date in Thailand.    My thinking is that as the first 14 days are not covered, it doesn't matter where I am and so long as it is effective on my arrival, it should be accepted.  Any thoughts?

We have not seen any 50,000 USD packages created within Thailand yet. For now all of the 100,000 USD policies meet the reduced requirements.

If new policies are available we will add them to the comparison here:

    https://asq.in.th/thailand-covid-insurance

Is there an age limit on the various policys?

  6. One of the requirements is to obtain the Thailand Pass is Insurance of 'not les than $50,000.   Is that for general medical cover plus Covid or just Covid.

As  separate item I note that the ASQ/SHA packages are for 1 night and then the next is 7 days,  It maybe that your flight arrives after 6 p.m and 1 night will not be sufficient. Has any one seen 2 night packages?

  7. This helpful contribution by @Treetops may be of nterest. Also don'tforgetUKwillbe 7 hrs behind Thailand on 31 Oct 21.

'Airlines will check Timatic, the IATA system which defines what is required based on info from each countries aviation authorities.  For Thailand this says it's from the time the test result was issued, no mention of the time the sample was taken:

I recently got a real surprise from Singapore Airlines.  I booked a one way to Los Angeles from Bangkok and thought “3 days from departure Anti-gen or PCR test”  will meet the US CDC requirements for entry?  I was wrong because buried deep in SIA’s website is this:  Transit Passengers at Changi Airport must have a negative PCR test within 48 hours before departure.  Singapore requires a PCR test just to transit.

Double and Triple check the requirements for Entry and now Transit.  The two could be different.

Found this in Etihads Travel Requirements:

'You will need to take a PCR test 48 hours before departure if Abu Dhabi is your final destination. There may be additional testing requirements depending upon your destination. You can check this by searching for your final destination and selecting the ‘Flying to’ tab'.

Currently, as we all know, UK does NOT require a PCR test, just a Lateral Flow Test before or on day 2 after arrival.  However, given that the UK could well be heading for 'Plan B' that could change.

To be safe I will have a test 48Hrs prior to departure

Unless it simply isn't possible, for example weekends can sometimes interfere, my opinion is that it is best to be on the safe side and take 72 hrs from time the swab was taken before scheduled flight time. And even allow for a small delay in the flight in that calculation.

Thank you.  I am'all at sea' on this matter.    My flight is on 27 November LHR ETD 1450.   8 hour break in Abu Dhabi (Business  Lounge).  ETD Abu Dhabi 0835.

My confusion is - Does the 72 hrs before boarding have to take account of the Abu Dhabi - BKK leg?

  10. I take it that OP' Swissie' is from that very scenic country.    If I am correct I can understand why he has such an insular and fairy tale perspective on life inthe 21st century,

When was the last time Switzerland fired a shot in anger?  Ah yes, legend has it that it was on 13 November 1307 and that fella the Swiss patriot William Tell, who shot an Apple off his sons head.

  11. my apologies for continuing this matter but I am told that I have been viewing the statement  'Foreigners and Thai residents in Thailand cannot purchase insurance'  incorrectly.

The subject matter concerned the statement contained at the bottom of the opening page of the web page 'covid19.tgia.org'  which reads ' (Foreigners and Thai residents in Thailand cannot purchase insurance)'   I took this to mean that having visited my home country and was returning to my home in Thailand,  I was unable purchase insurance through this site.

However, I am now told that the statement is only applicable to anyone living in Thailand who wishes to buy Covid Insurance.   The purchase of this insurance is meant for persons wishing to re-enter Thailand from overseas.

If this interpretation is correct, I will not have problem.

Completely irrelevant if its red or green until they recognize the AZ jab taken here.

Not quite correct.    if Thailand moves to the Green List and in the absence of recognition of AZ Thailand all that is required is 10 days quarantine in your own home.  No great hardship and not irrelevant in my thinking personally.   Plus I am confident that come January 2022 WHO will have approved the vaccine made by Siam Bioscience following the September 2021 submisssion to WHO for approval.
