Yes, for motorbikes it can be more difficult, but for cars I presume most foreigners drive relatively new cars with first class insurance. First class insurance or not is not relevant though, because the insurance cover required is 3rd party, and I do hope everybody has that on their cars.
Many older cars & pick-ups only have the government 'compulsory' insurance which from my understanding only covers limited medical costs and no mechanical damage even to the third party. (and more important no bail bond !!!) I might be wrong with that thinking ??? but when I had an old old jeep I know I paid an extra premium for 3rd party, on top of the compulsory premium.
Motorbikes yes, you're right, cars afaik have 3rd party compulsory. But I'm not 100% sure about that. Would have to check that on the car insurance papers.

You don't need a Thai partner.
Simply call your insurance, they will sort it out for you. And since they don't like to pay you can be sure they won't unless you are to blame according to the law.
That's good advice Steven, but it does assume that you have first class insurance. And that's usually not available for a motor bike or older car/vehicle.
My last accident was a small bump into a m/bike that swerved in front of me. I wanted to offer a small payment for the light damage, but no ... the 2 young ladies wanted 'injury' and 'upset' money. I just called the insurance company, and wasted a couple of hours making a police report with the insurance assessor, and the ladies ended up with almost nothing to cover the damage to the rear number plate/mud guard. But I lost my no claims discount the next year's premium. Sigh sigh.

and as we all know it's the Farangs fault so I am actually a bit on edge driving the pickup thesedays..
Why do people keep writing this kind of nonsense? The person responsible for an accident is the one that will have to take the blame, whereever he/she is from.
Disagree,
When the speeding yahoo hit me from behind because he was going to fast, the cop tried very hard to get me to pay for his considerable damage to a brand new CBR and even assigned blame to me. Maybe you have a Thai partner to argue for your rights, but not all of us do.
I think Caucasian foreigners aka " farang" in Thailand are discriminated against at pretty much every opportunity and are more likely to be blamed unfairly in accidents.

Sadly I don't find this very surprising. Now that it's high season there are so many people in the water and there are no designated swimming areas. So the speed boats and jet skis just cruise about where lots of people are swimming. Madness.
Yes, agree with you and they should separate the two.
At the Northern end of the beach though is a buoyline, separating the reef there from the rest of the beach, indicating an area safe to swim/snorkel/dive. I have not seen any speedboatds/longtails in that area, only an occasional jetski when the renter has not had this pointed out. But even that does not happen too often.

No spare bulbs, but with the Thais loving their lights in all colours nearly any shop will sell X-mas lights and decorations.

Dont be mad because you cant afford a car.
Why would I be mad? Since I have a car, 2 motorbikes and one sidecar I apparently can afford a car.
-
Then you will be in the wrong when you get hit and die. That's your choice if you want to block traffic. Suffer the consequences. You are supose to wait untill you are very close to it, then accelerate fast, wait untill a car in the right lane turns as well or WAIT on the side of the road untill its clear.
Maybe it is time for you to learn something about driving rules and habits here, because on both counts you are wrong.

I go up the by pass road many times and rarely does any one pass me, I travel between 100 kph and 120 kph conditions and traffic permitting, yes there are a few that do more than this but in my experience not that many!!
bypass road is a few km long, I am talking real highways and expressways where drivers think they can use right lane cause their at 120kmh. Thai law is clear, keep left except at moment of overtaking
When I drive to Bangkok I normally drive at 120 km/h, and very rarely get overtaken. For sure not by the buses that people always claim drive a lot faster.

Frankly I'd rather have them than an alcoholic teaching kids.
What about a teacher who does his job without being doped or pissed
So a teacher can't drink a beer or 2 at night?
-
Claims suppression of freedom - check
Claims drug tests are fallible - check
Claims its ok for teacher to smoke dope - check
Predictable and transparent - check.
Fail.
Why would it not be ok to smoke a little dope after work? No difference at all with a beer or 2 IMO.

OK, assuming you're right and the meaning wasn't twisted (after all Kazza backed you up and and it probably had nothing to do with the animosity she often directs at me), do you think your conclusion, based on that one throwaway line, that I don't understand the people here, is reasonable?
It suggests that you're an expert on all things Thai as well as having a thorough knowledge of my state of mind and intelligence, and it was off the topic about bad driving.
I'd let you know what it tells me about you, but LIK would have his finger hovering over the button.
That's why I said 'if you really think'.
But I think we're getting OT here.

It's a real pity dirt poor locals have to spend money buying a motorbike before they spend their meager funds on food or decent accommodation for their families.
If you really think accommodation or food is in Thailand more important than a motorbike I'm afraid you don't understand much about it's people.
By partially quoting my post and leaving out the important part about prefering to see a bus service, you twisted the meaning.
You don't understand much about forum etiquite.
My apologies, I should have used 'snip' before and after the quote.
The meaning of your quote nor the intention has been changed by this though.

One day if you drive next to my car you'll be part of the group of people i hear screaming because im driving 2cm away from them when they block me.. Best part of my day. 3 Thais on motorbike blocking my way unknowingly then screaming for their lives thinking im a bad thai driver who doesn't know his distances. My hope is that by spooking them to death, they'll eventually learn something and gtfo the middle of the road.
That probably won't happen, but sooner or later you'll hit one of them.

True Sports HD was all in English for the world cup and still is. That is one of the benefits of True Sports HD.....
Not according to this article: http://www.thaivisa...._1#entry3693124
Hmmm, I thought it was in English at that point but in fairness i didn't have it then.
Anyhow it's in English now on the HD channels but not on the SD channels.
It is in English on all channels, except for the pre and post match blabla.

Please explain why i am wrong if you can
easy, I was a 16 yo biker and saturday/sunday pump attendant more than 3 decades ago
when electric pump stops, meter stops, empty rest of the fuel in the hose in my bike (or a 5 liter can), next car please. starts at zero, everyone happy, including my bike
2 stroke oil we had to buy tho
anyway filling up 60-70 liters, who cares, as long as I get the quality I need
Since I have never seen a personal bike or empty canister standing next to the punp that is not what's happening. So I really think Peter is right this time.

It is accepted everywhere in Thailand that businesses put tables&chairs, clothing racks or whatever on the road/pavement in front of their businesses. Don't think this is backed by a written rule of law, but in any legal system custom is also a source of law.
Maybe a rule should be made and enforced that they are only allowed to encroach on the road/pavement for maximally a certain distance from the premises. Oh well, I am dreaming, everybody knows expecting something like this to be really enforced would be unrealistic.
I used to be a frequent visitor to the soi this thread is about in 2005, it looks a lot more congested now indeed.
If it were just pots and plants, even tables, it should be no problem to sort out. But now they have been building permanent structures on the road. So I'm with PoorSucker: you build on the road, in this case even other person's property, not a public road, so yes, you stand a chance of losing your investment. Adam knew it was illegal, accept the consequences.

Huh. That's quite hefty. Have to rethink True. I used to have True some 4 years ago and if I recall correctly there was not too many adds displayed at least on movie channels. The price was half of that. Maybe things have changed.
Anyway I would like to see the boys driving like crazy on a round track.
You should talk with Mel.
No new Astro subscriptions at the moment, they're having some problems with the cards.

Why would there be any updates? The guy was snorkeling and died because his heart stopped working.

is that so? Is crime rate in Rawai higher, and if so is the cause the lack of a police station?
