My only experience of PKK comes from watching a series of you tube videos made by an American who dumped his 70 year old mother there after living her entire life in the US. First thing you notice she does not or cannot drive. There are no taxis so she basically became house bound. He bought her a three wheel electric trike which on Thai roads is a disaster waiting to happen. He rented a cheap, totally inappropriate house, but it was next door to his American friend so I assume the you tuber thought his friend would look after his mother. You can see on the videos she goes to the same two restaurants everyday. After almost one year they have discovered that living in the boonies as a 70 year old with limited mobility is not practical. There is also a back packer video that shows them arriving in PKK and can not understand why their grab app is not working. They are trying to get to a resort 15 kays out of town and are stuffed.

90 days reminder email
stratocaster replied to Cuchulainn's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
This has been my case 3 or 4 times. I just ignore the reminder and submit for the correct 90 day period. My 90 day was due 23 August. As I was unsure of travel plans I submitted online last week which was pending. Yesterday got email from immigration "application rejected due to departing Thailand 21 August". As departure is obviously tied to reporting now, perhaps entry will be. -
I have weak legs also and crossed Vientiane this morning. Bus from BKK stopped at border before bus station. Extremely quiet. Enter Thai immigration at 0800 and I had to fill in Laos voa for 1700 baht but was still in the taxi to Vientiane at 0835. Big difference since last trip Kip is preferred over Baht.

Pleasant surprise at Savannakhet
stratocaster replied to kidneyw's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
As I mentioned in a previous post I think Sav will start an appointment system. Going on holiday to Vientiane today so will make a point to walk past the Embassy as the hotel is nearby, to see what the queues are like at collection time -
Electric Vehicles in Thailand
stratocaster replied to Bandersnatch's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
Can anyone here give a definitive answer regarding the legality of electric vehicles in Thailand. Years ago my friend bought a golf buggy for his daughter to use as transport for the 6 kilo ride to school. Even with his company's legal department help he could not get it registered. She just continued to use it for the next 5 years with no problem. There is a guy with an electric vespa styled motorbike that he has been unable to register. He just uses it again with no problem. Now a youtuber has bought a semi enclosed electric three wheeler for his mother. He claims it is impossible to register and was assured that no license is required. A Thai neighbor is driving an electric DT motors city car. This is similar in styling to a Smart car. It appears fully road legal and completely enclosed with AC. She assures me that registration nor license is required. Looking on DT website it claims neither plates or license is required. -
It must be creating a bit of controversy as there was a 15 minute segment on Thai news yesterday. The roller does not look too badly damaged hence only the 1.3 million baht estimate. A poultice of bondo and a quick blow over with a rattle can and the job's a good un. But the pickup. Holly molly. Would be a write off in any other country. This is the problem when you crash into the equivalent of a brick outhouse.

I am curious to know what means of transport the posters have used since moving to Thailand? Did your petrol head bubble burst? I now run a 2003 4.7 liter Grand Cherokee and 1990 560 SEC Mercedes Benz. There ain't no substitute for cubic inches. Never mind the cost feel the torque. And no, I will not be buying an EV.

Guesthouse by the ocean
stratocaster replied to 7euner's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
I have a former work colleague who after retiring with 30 years working in Thailand did exactly this. Ocean front guesthouse on an island. He considers it a hobby business. He claims for three months he makes good money, for three months he breaks even, for three months he makes a loss. He is Thai by the way. -
Thai Airways welcomes 2 new A350 models for modern travel
stratocaster replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
The latest in thing for some airlines now is to retrofit the exterior livery as used on their 70's and 80's aircraft. I thought this would be a good move for Thai airways as the exterior would then match the interior. On a more serious note I was watching Heathrow departures yesterday and it is amazing the amount of former white elephants, also known as A380's that are back in service. Felt like every third plane was one. There was an article that stated that Thai A380's are to remain grounded for the foreseeable future. I have just re watched a cine film I made in 1983 onboard a Thai flight and was surprised to see a full bottle, yes bottle, of Singha on the tray. Last flight taken I got a half empty plastic glass, they did not even give me the remains of the can. -
An old school headlight. 2 bulbs one for high beam one for low beam and a static reflector. Modern high end headlight. A number of daytime running lights that require up to a 50 volt transformer. One main bulb that runs at 6 volts due to heat so requires a step down transformer. To alter from high to low beam two 12 volt motors are required to move the reflector, but with the added benefit of self leveling. To manage heat generated at least one 12 volt fan is required. All of this requires a chip controlled logic board with more computing power than the Apollo moon landing. this is one example of why a shortage of chips is critical in car production. And why some OEM headlight assembles cost upwards of 3,000 US each.

Will be interesting to see the next financial report to find out what they put down on paper as the cost. -
A friend of a friend has just applied to change his VE to a first non o for the purpose of retirement. He fulfilled all the required documents according to immigration and was told all in order. Sorry don't know which office. Checking his passport he discovered nothing new has been stamped inside . There is a date stamp on the bottom of his receipt dated 21 days from application, with written in Thai underneath, Please return to office on the above date. I would have suspected that immigration had just forgotten to enter the non 0 details except for the notation on the receipt. Coincidentally I came across a recent visa agent video in which he states that a non o (not extension) in Jomtien now requires a second visit after 21/28 days to recheck the documents.

Not exactly new as both aircraft are almost 4 years old and are from a batch of cancellations. One plane is ex Hainan airways but never carried out commercial flights. Cost per plane is estimated at 110,175,000 US. -
Reminds me of the American V/logger in Thailand who brought is 70 year old mother to retire here. Last month the video was titled " mum lives like a millionairess on small pension". Next video was "mum has road accident and needs hip replacement". Next video was "thanks to all the people who used the gofundme to pay for her 15,000 US operation.

Fifty-seven swimmers fall sick and get diarrhea

This is why my niece had to stop exporting to Europe with the loss of 42 jobs. https://www.itv.com/news/2023-05-26/worrying-levels-of-e-coli-in-uks-shellfish-as-sewage-spills-into-sea -
There was a bill proposed in Parliament to require all retailers to continue to accept cash for products and services. It failed at the first petition stage. So, yes at present they are under no obligation to accept cash.

Comparing rents is impossible unless the comparisons are like for like. For an example, an identical property with no off road parking is around 300 pounds a month cheaper than a property with a 2 car off road parking in London. A completely unscientific take on property rents using 5 in a scale 1 to 10 for area, which is the biggest factor in any kind of property, renting or buying. My home town 15.6% unemployment rate and 25,000 average salary, shows an average rental of 574 pounds for a studio and 1200 pounds for a 2 bedroom semi. London, close to Heathrow with an unemployment rate of 4.5% and an average salary of 35,000 shows an average rent of a studio at 1200 pounds and 2700 pounds for a 2 bedroom semi. As you can see leveling up has been a massive success. Cheap rents but no work, expensive rents buts lots of work. The average mortgage holder in the UK is now paying 46% of their income in mortgage repayments a 15 year high.

Latest breaking news from the Daily Fail. (The paper that keeps racism alive and well in the UK) Those bloody EU foreigners are at it again. They have just announced that in the near future, UK citizens will be subjected to requiring a visa to visit the EU. To add injury to insult they will treat us as common criminals requiring a photograph and fingerprints. Who do they think they are, treating gods gift to mankind as ruffians and scallywags. Calling us a third country nation is just not cricket. (We are world leaders at that as well). They need to realise that the last time we were restricted to visiting a country we gathered a task force and gave them a damn good thrashing. We at the Daily Fail say stop buying Johnny Foreigners EU goods so that their economy collapses and they come cap in hand to join the Empire Of The UK to access our wonderful trade deals. Continued on pages 2,3,4,5,6,7,8. On another page but well hidden from readers. Hundreds of Brits expelled from Sweden, Portugal, Spain, France and Germany in the last week. Unfortunately space limits restrict reporting on their fate.
