POLL: Do you think Brexit is a success or failure?
Mac Mickmanus replied to Scott's topic in World News
The polls are going exactly how I thought they would go and confirms my suspicions that the huge majority of posters who think that Brexit is a failure have never even been to the UK , or at best, just go there for a minimal amount of time for a short holiday to keep their pension payments at UK levels and not the Thai living rates . They don't live in the UK and just get their opinion from anti Brexit news outlets who post biased reports . Their main concern is the Pound/Baht exchange rate and I expect they would be in favour of Brexit if the Pound went back to to the 1998 exchange rate , 70 odd Baht instead of 40 -
Why is the UK struggling more than other countries?

The GFA requires an open border . The E.U requires a closed border . It cannot be both an open border and a closed border . The current temporary border agreement has moved the border into the sea and that border issue needs to be resolved . -

The Irish Good Friday agreement was signed BEFORE the UK left the E.U. The GFA was signed in 1998 and everyone was happy with the agreement then Brexit came a long and the E.U requires Ireland to have a hard border between its E.U territory and non E.U territory and that hard border was back to where the Irish/Northern Irish borer used to be . The GFA and E.U rules contradict each other , one requires a hard border and the other requires a soft border -
POLL: Do you think Brexit is a success or failure?

Although its not actually a renegotiation of temporary agreements , it is actually just a five year review of a permeant agreement . The first review of the U.K -E.U trade agreement will take place in 2025 and first annual fishing quota negations begin in 2026 . Shows how desperate remainers are when they hope it will lead to the UK joining the E.U and regard them as renegotiations, when they are just reviews Important upcoming dates relating to EU Exit, including the introduction of checks and controls, and the Assembly’s democratic consent vote on the Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland. Dates Actions 31 December 2023 UK to introduce its new regime for border import controls. 31 December 2023 Under the Retained EU Law Bill, the majority of retained EU law would expire, unless preserved. 31 December 2024 By this date, the first vote will take place in the Northern Ireland Assembly on the continued application of Articles 5-10 of the Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland, as outlined in the democratic consent mechanism. Why is the UK struggling more than other countries?
Mac Mickmanus replied to Scott's topic in World News
The hard Irish border moved into the sea (between U.K and Ireland) to keep the GFA and the E.U hard border policy they erected a new hard border out in the sea and this is unacceptable to Northern Irish as it cuts them off from the rest of the U.K. The E.U does require closed borders , or perhaps hard border would be the better way to describe the borders in order to enforce E.U regulation . The GFA and E.U hard border rules contradict each other and there needs to a be a compromise somewhere from one/both of the sides -

So the Good Friday agreement can co exist with all the E.U regulations ? The Good Friday agreement agrees to an open border and E.U rules require a closed border , which is where the conflict between the three parties is . -
POLL: Do you think Brexit is a success or failure?

It was a reference to the favoured "Sunny uplands" quote and added to the current winter conditions in the UK , I just thought that I'd get the "Sunny uplands" catch phrase in first. Rather poetic, I thought , combining the current UK weather conditions and the economic predictions of Brexit -
POLL: Do you think Brexit is a success or failure?

Brexit itself was a success as the UK left the E.U and that was leavers aims . How the U.K fares post Brexit is a separate issue to the success of Brexit itself as the economy wasn't the main issue for leaving the E.U. Its winter time now and and it wont be long before the forecasted sunny weather is upon the green green grass of home -
Chiang Mai losing its appeal—how to manage? [long post/discussion]
Mac Mickmanus replied to ThLT's topic in Chiang Mai
I think of myself as a "Pattaya" , but if I am being honest with myself I am more like a "Chiang Mai"..........................then I see a reflection of myself in a shop window and I see a "Hua Hin " ???? -
Why is the UK struggling more than other countries?

That is a separate issue that needs sorting out as the UK/Ireland agreement conflicts with the E.U rules and to solve that issue there will need to be some compromise somewhere and either the UK/Ireland agreement needs to be changed or the E.U rules need to be changed as they conflict with one another and that's not an example of Kwilcos claims . Its up to the E.U whether they insist on a hard Irish border or whether they are willing to comprise on the issue -

I am making a valid point , I have noticed that the people living in the UK (in this thread) are quite happy and content with Brexit and the results of it and its those who live abroad who aren't happy with Brexit . For the sake of validating peoples opinion from personal experiences , I wondered how long they have spent in the UK post Brexit -

More like : Brexit is done and dusted and we are out the E.U and now lets get on with it and move on and there's no point looking back and analysing what would have happened had we'd stayed in . We left and lets get on with it and if leaving had a detrimental effect on the UK, then so be it
