I’ve heard from someone that there is now zero nightlife in Vientiane whatsoever. Is this true?

Figure out the number 1 place you want to work and show up there. It may take a couple of visits. Convince the boss you should work there. The easiest way is to make them like you and that’s easier than it sounds. Ask them for a very small favor, like a drink of water. They will rationalize that they did you the favor because they like you. Then confirmation bias will take over and they will have a “good feeling” about you without knowing why. But you have to literally show up, Thai people are intimidated by the idea of responding to emails in English. Showing up in person will also let them see that you are Thai.

Agent wanted to open bank account
Everyman replied to Justanotherone's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
You should be able to do it yourself at Bangkok Bank and without buying the insurance policy. You might need a bunch of documents. Otherwise you could get a 3 month NON-O outside Thailand. -
It is no longer possible to open a Thai bank account on a visa waiver stamp except (maybe) at Bangkok Bank. I have tried at more than 40 branches in 5 provinces. Krungsri, SCB, Krung Thai and Kasikorn have all told me very consistently that it was possible on a waiver stamp or tourist visa but no longer is. Now you need a “one year visa.”. You are wasting your time telling them that you need a bank account to get a one year visa. Might as well speak to them in Swahili. An agent will undoubtedly use Bangkok Bank and it may not change the requirements, just that they will speak to the branch staff on your behalf which is probably unnecessary. Anyway the short version is try different Bangkok Bank branches until you get one that is cooperative.

Two years ago I bought an AIS Net Marathon SIM. 1790 baht for 100 GB per month, for a year. That works out to be about 150 baht per month. After a year, I was offered the option to renew for the same price. This I did. I was hoping that as the third year approached, I would be offered the same deal. Alas I was not, and that package has sadly now expired. Is there a way I can get it back, absent buying a new Net Marathon SIM? If that is impossible, then is there an equivalent monthly package? I looked at the packages available on the AIS app and they were all <deleted> except a “special” offering. That is 100GB for 30 days for 300 baht, but that is double the price I was paying so obviously that isn’t as good. It’s not important to me whether it’s 5G or 4G since I was getting about 70 Mbps with 4G and that is plenty fast enough for my purposes. I use about 50GB per month so that’s the bare minimum. I’m using an iPhone 12 if that will make a difference to any suggestions. Thanks

Over the counter ATM withdrawal
Everyman replied to gargamon's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
USAA ATM fee reimbursement is down to $10 a month, so if you are making more than one withdrawal then you are going to pay some of the fee for the second withdrawal. -
I know you don’t want to hear this but you should buy a new phone. The non Apple batteries are <deleted> and an Apple battery is going to cost at least 4000 baht. For that you could buy an iphone 8 in decent condition. But if I were you I would get a better phone than that. If you like the small form factor the new 2022 SE is about 15,000 baht.

It never gets as far as showing them documents or having long conversations in Thai. They ask to see my passport, find my tourist visa and tell me no. Every single time, at 40 different branches. I think there needs to be a sticky thread or something telling people that is no longer possible to open an account on a tourist visa unless it is Bangkok Bank, and it may not even be possible there either. I don’t know.

Investing in Multimedia or Bitcoin?
Everyman replied to JeffersLos's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
How do you invest in Youtube videos? Are you talking about handing over money to a content creator? Really sounds like a scam. If you want to invest in Youtube videos then buy Youtube stock on the NASDAQ -
Investing in Multimedia or Bitcoin?
Everyman replied to JeffersLos's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
Your “group?” Group of what? I haven’t heard anyone use the term “multimedia” since the 90’s. Choose Option C. Take your money and run. -
I took this ferry in 2019. Is it running again?

I already have an account with Bangkok Bank that I opened many years ago, I am in need of a second bank account with another bank. Currently I am on a tourist visa. I have tried to open an account with 30 (yes thirty) different branches in Chonburi, Bangkok and Phuket and been told very consistently that they do not open bank accounts for people on tourist visas and that a “one year visa” is required. The representative at Krungsri in central festival in Pattaya told me it is illegal to open accounts for tourists. I would like to know if someone out there has been able to open a Thai bank account at bank that is not Bangkok Bank, on a tourist visa, recently (in the year 2022, not ten years ago) and where that branch is so I can go there and open an account. Thank you.

Thai Credit Cards
Everyman replied to pontious's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
Years ago i tried and failed to get a credit card from Bangkok Bank. This is when i had a NON-B and work permit. I gave up. In the end, depending on what country you are from “originally,” it’s best to maintain some address there (however artificially) along with a credit score, cards, accounts, etc. Plenty of banks offer cards without foreign transaction fees with attractive “cash back” offers. It can be important to maintain a good credit score too, so many things in the west depend on it that shouldn’t. -
Anyone know what time the earliest bus from Pattaya goes to suvarnabhumi? Where does it leave from? Thanks

The USD to THB rate has dropped because currency traders think the US Federal Reserve is done raising interest rates. It isn’t. As far as English teachers “thinking they are smarter than currency markets,” it’s not about who is smart, or who is a trader and who is a teacher. What matters is who is right.
