Senate Republicans recently blocked a bipartisan border security agreement. The proposed legislation aimed to enhance border security by increasing the number of Border Patrol agents, immigration judges, and asylum officers, as well as implementing new technology to detect and stop fentanyl trafficking. It also included provisions to expedite work authorization for eligible individuals and to provide legal counsel for unaccompanied children arriving at the border. Despite these measures, Republicans, influenced by former President Donald Trump, opposed the agreement, preferring to campaign on the issue rather than pass the bill.
