Hotel Recommendation for US Embassy in Bangkok
NoDisplayName replied to racyrick's topic in US & Canada Topics and Events
While you're at it, have a look at the subway map. No need to find a hotel within walking distance of the embassy. Find a suitable place somewhere near a subway or train station (or pier!), and book an appointment slot outside of heavy commuter times. -
Residency Certificate at US embassy
NoDisplayName replied to jaywalker2's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
It's not always free. CW charges 200 baht last time I received one there, *IF* they'll issue you one. At that time DLT wanted two copies, one for car and one for moto. Other provinces? Some may be free, others charge 500 baht. As for CW, you need to have a 90-day report on file first, so no license for tourists, nor buying a used car. The retired folks coming in on visa exempt and converting to non-O are looking at about six months before they can get their "free" residency certificate. I'd much prefer a "free" certificate, but I might be willing to pay $50 to get it now. The advantage to that is that I can use that embassy paper to open bank and brokerage accounts. -
Residency Certificate at US embassy

That is news! Embassy is no longer issuing notarized affidavits stating address to be used for drivers licenses or buying/selling cars. It's for our own good, they say! https://th.usembassy.gov/wp-content/uploads/sites/90/factsheet-cessation-of-residency-affidavits.pdf -
Ask your landlord if the apartment is registered on the Sec.38 app. If so, he can do your TM30 in a couple minutes, or can give you the login information to do it yourself. If not, and you think you'll need a TM30 for extensions, you may be able to register the apartment as possessor uploading the rental contract and your passport.

JetStar, one of the most hated airlines in the world – survey
NoDisplayName replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
I've flown scores of flights on JetStar throughout Asia. Cheap flights, usually on time, no unreasonable delays, no problem carrying oversize luggage (complete bicycles). I got exactly what I paid for - a modestly comfortable seat taking me from point A to point B, and no extras I didn't want to pay extra for. No complaints. Oh, wait! A computer-generated summary of irate Karen tweets changes everything! Never again! -
CD Collection For Sale or For Use As Loan Guarantee
NoDisplayName replied to maisodni's topic in Bangkok
Can we hear more about the "payment for the PIN code for a High Value ATM card" that you're holding? Sounds like a really interesting story behind this. -
CD Collection For Sale or For Use As Loan Guarantee
NoDisplayName replied to maisodni's topic in Bangkok
Am I to assume your great uncle, who happens to be a Nigerian prince, is prepared to send you the PIN code, as soon as you send 25K baht, refundable of course, for express mail and customs duties?- 52 replies

Well, here's where it gets interesting. Let's say Billy Bob hits a curb at speed and flies over his handlebars, smacking his noggin on a light pole and cracking his skull. Let's say he survives, barely, but needs multiple major surgeries, extensive time on a ventilator in ICU, and perhaps years of physical therapy. Billy Bob was a wee bit tipsy, he didn't wear a helmet, and he had no insurance. Heck, while we're at it, his license was suspended two years ago, but the police always looked the other way. Somebody has to pay for all this. There's the ambulance and police, paid for with tax bahts, but this takes away from deserving victims. The hospital and the doctors and the medicines and the surgeries and the therapy? It either comes out of the pockets of law-abiding insurance holders through higher premiums (if insurance come into this at all), or increased taxes, or the lost opportunities to use collected taxes for the public good. There's potential psychological trauma caused to others, or damage to other property to consider as well. So in a civilized society rights are not absolute. They come with responsibilities as well. If we're gonna let Billy Bob ride without a helmet, I'm fine with that, but no public services or insurance payout when he crashes. He's on his own. No helmet? Send the street sweepers to push him into the gutter.

What you will do if it will happens to you??
NoDisplayName replied to Cuadrado's topic in Rent or Buy a Condo
Ah. Sorry, my reading comprehension failed. Had to re-read the original post. You live here now (long term visa?) and have a Thai bank account which you used to transfer 2500 baht to some guy on the Facebooks? Or maybe deposited cash into some guy's account either at a teller or ATM? -

I'm guessing you sent cash via Western Union to a dude on Facebook? Nothing you can do. Next time book with an established booking site like Booking.com or Agoda where you have some recourse, and use a credit card. And whatever you do, don't make agreements with the renter outside of the booking site. -
That's down to education and training. I haven't driven without a seat-belt since high school (age of 8-tracks), or ridden a bicycle without a helmet the past half million kilometers. I can't imagine driving the wrong way down the side of a major highway to save a few seconds by avoiding the U-turn. I feel nauseous just thinking about it.

Where should/will an agent register me?
NoDisplayName replied to trax33's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
The IO will tell the foreigner he needed to maintain correct funds in the account for the full year, so no extension. He will need to start all over requesting a new non-O visa, OR pay an agent to pay an IO to look the other way again. -
the ideal dual 3-prong socket for a kitchen
NoDisplayName replied to mahjongguy's topic in The Electrical Forum
I picked these up at DoHome. Available in black or white, individual bits you mix&match. HunnyBunny wanted receptacles on the wall above the stovetop. One standard socket for the stovetop (white) and one specialty socket for the air fryer (black) that accepts the Chinese three prong plug with angled blades. Both have an on-off rocker switch above the socket. -
Easy fix. When you return, remove the wood plate, which is too small for the numbers. What to do with the holes already drilled? Replace with a thin stone plate that looks nice against the stone column, makes the numbers legible from the road, and is the correct size for the numbers. Drill it to use the holes you already have prepared. If you're worried about the Thai lady, next time it comes up, casually mention that you're not happy that YOU made a poor design. Can't fault the workers for following your orders. You'll try something else when you return.

You must have purchased a specialized bit for an industrial drill. Or rather, the clerk sold you a specialized bit but couldn't admit the misteak. Standard drill bits (metal, wood, concrete) are available at Global House, DoHome, Home Pro, Mr. DIY...............and of course local hardware shops.

Was the pickup driver intoxicated? It wasn't mentioned in the news article, so i suspect that was just sympathy filler in the gofundme script. The reporter wouldn't print that without seeing a police report. I suspect they made up some other bits to make the motorcyclist appear more deserving, like the part about ending the call before the accident. Most likely he was still talking when he hit the pickup.

Wise or swift
NoDisplayName replied to Harveyboy's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
Depends. How large is the transfer, and what is the forex rate at the receiving bank? Set up a spreadsheet and calculate the total cost using both for various amounts. You can get the actual forex rate from xe.com, and compare that to the right now rates from wise and your Thai bank website. -
That could be fun. See how long you can keep them on the line. Be interested, ask many questions. Be dense. Don't understand. Ask for clarification. Misunderstand. Be confused. Be polite but dumb as a rock. When they start to get exasperated and want to end the call, casually mention that you lost your job and your credit cards have been cancelled due to non-payment, but it wasn't your fault, so you could really really really use a loan or credit line.
-
It wasn't? All his family claimed was That doesn't tell us what happened, or which lane the motorbike was in. Nothing there to assign fault. And this is a one-sided report from the family. If the police report gave any indication of the pickup driver being at fault, surely that would have been included in the article. All I get out of this is: 1. out for a drink with the lads 2. on his motorbike in the early hours 3. no helmet 4. on the phone I wouldn't want to assume, but............

I recently saw a fellow intent on texting and fall off a curb into the street. Hopefully the government will get around to installing glass barriers to prevent this happening again. Someone might get hurt. When they complete that, I hope they get around to installing glass barriers on all the beaches. Someone might fall and get wet.
