One of the attractive features of Bangkok years ago was the way old communal neighborhoods and more modern developments coexisted side by side. This was in large part due to the fact that the older traditional neighborhoods were situated on land owned by the crown and allowed to persist by the grace of the former king. Of course developers were eager to get their hands on this land and when the king passed, the commoners were kicked out and all these new exorbinant condominiums that could only be afforded by the rich arose. Property prices in the CBD rose astonomically, fueled by investment from foreign sources, particularly China. Most of the poorer and middle class Thais have been forced to the distant suburbs. Thus we can imagine what the effect will be if the government also opens up land ownership to foreign investment.

Private Sector: Extending Foreign Leasehold Ownership A Better Option
jaywalker2 replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Rich Chinese. -
I don't disagree that the foreign land ownership laws need reform. On the other hand, completely opening the market will undoubtedly lead to the kind of stratospheric property prices that you see in the west. Rather than basing land ownership on investment amount, maybe the government should consider allowing it for farangs established in the kingdom -- with wives and children, for example.

Would you mind saying what hotel?

I worry that brokerages in particular will start demanding two-step verification with a phone number. If you're living outside your home country, it might be impossible to comply if your brokerage (or bank) doesn't allow or limits foreign accounts. Although Google Voice will give you a U.S. number, you have to be in the U.S. to sign up for it. I tried signing up from Thailand and got banned from the service!

Google did turn on two-step verification automatically at one point and although I turned it off, I get constant reminders for security checks that urge me to turn it back on. I would prefer not to have my account tied to my phone so if an OTP is necessary I would rather have it sent via email but not everybody gives you that choice. On the other hand, I haven't been able to set up an instagram account. I've tried 3 email addresses and in each case got a message that it was already in use. Also, Instagram demands that you sign up using a phone number, which facebook then sells to advertisers. So I've given up on using it.

I had a friend who was having vision problems and went to a famous private hospital in Bangkok (which I won't name but began with the letter B). They told him he needed immediate cataract surgery and pressed him to make an appointment for that afternoon. Naturally, he was reluctant and instead went to the Eye Hospital for a second opinion. They told him he just had dry eyes and prescribed eye drops, which fixed the problem.

Prawit Urged To Stop Giving Aid To ‘Two-Faced’ MPs

I thought providing "tangible support" could get your party dissolved and the giver suspended from politics for 10 years. -
Ex-Police Chief: Srisuwan Merely Taught A Lesson
jaywalker2 replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
He's just a pathetic idiot who runs a coffee shop and is constantly trying to draw attention to himself. He used to file complaints against the government but gave that up when they threatened him so he clearly doesn't have any real ethics. The mystery is why the media gives him so much free publicity. -
USA Passport Renewal Service Available in Pattaya
jaywalker2 replied to Jingthing's topic in Pattaya
You misunderstood the post. He's not talking about an embassy service. He's talking about a private company service (Key Visa) that will handle the passport renewal for Americans. The American Embassy implemented during Covid a new requirement that all passport renewals be done by mail. I can see why many elderly Americans would not want to deal with that hassle themselves. -
Do you know WHY tyres are Black ?
jaywalker2 replied to Social Media's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
I knew a guy who launched a start-up in Thailand aimed at making colored bicycle tires. The only way he could do it was to put a thin colored skin over the black tire. He was never able to work the kinks out and the company went belly up. -
Interestingly, the Amsterdam mayor is talking about banning tourists from cannabis cafes on the grounds that they (the cafes) are causing social problems. It should be noted that although the possession of small quanities of marijuana is legal in Amsterdam, the commercial growing of marijuana is not. Thus, the cafes ironically have to get their weed from illegal sources.

Can your US bank send an OTP to your Thai number?
jaywalker2 replied to brizz's topic in US & Canada Topics and Events
I have an account with Citibank New York. For a long time, they wouldn't send OTP's but recently that's changed though it's still hit or miss. Sometimes they'll send it and sometimes I have to call for a code. I can't seem to get a coherent explanation for the reason. They also told me that I couldn't get a debit card if I lived outside of the country but only an ATM card. But that changed when I got my last card. The problem with these banks is one department doesn't know what the others are doing. Oh, I also have what is called a global executive account. -

Crisis Of Confidence In Constitutional Court Looms: Academic
jaywalker2 replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
What's dumb is how every time an issue comes before the court, the media acts like the decision is actually in doubt. Did anybody ever think a court handpicked by Prayut would vote against him, no matter how absurd the ruling. -
Only if they're weightlifting. There used to be (haven't seen him lately) a farang in Lumpini who always jogged with his shirt off. Bald head, bulging stomach, hairy body...Not the type of thing you should be subjecting other people to. On another note, is it all right for a woman to display a cameltoe in public?
