  1. The Great San Franciso of 1906 and the Tokyo earthquake of 1923 both measured 7.9. The Japanese earthquake of 2011 measured an incredible 9.0 but it occurred relatively deep in the ocean so the major effect was the devastating tsunami.
  2. Earthquake measured at 4.9, which isn't that big. It felt a lot bigger though. The corridor wall in my building
  3. White Lotus finally ramps up in episode 5. The main complaint about the White Lotus in general is that it tends to be really slow in the beginning episodes as all the pieces are being put into place and the backstories of the ensemble cast are slowly revealed. But the first two seasons really packed a punch at the end and I'm expecting the same thing from this season. As an aside, even those who don't like it might want to take a look at episode 5. Sam Rockwell makes a special guest appearance and goes into a long monologue about his fixation with Asian women that leads to some pretty sordid actiivties with the ladyboys, which just goes to show what Thailand can do to you. Walter Goggins expression as he listens is priceless.
  4. Not in Japan or Korea it isn't
  5. It was your ex-wife, Bob. Didn’t you recognise her?
  6. Under the Bridge. About the killing of a 14 year old girl of Indian heritage by a group of her peers in a small town in Victoria canada. It takes about 3 episodes to really get going but ends up incredibly painful to watch. The sheer brutality and despair is overwhelming.
  7. what speeds were you getting?
  8. That's fine for you. Other people travel around, they stay in hotels. Many digital nomads rely on WiFI. If you're a peripatetic, I don't see how you can avoid using public WiFi.
  9. How safe do you think your phone is then when you're walking around town, inputting your bank information, or whatever. There's no ideal solution, especially when you're traveling.
  10. It's okay if you use a VPN and only go to HTTPS sites.
  11. Can't afford therapy, is that it? You need to get a hobby.
  12. And don't forget he also has 14 kids to raise
  13. Yes this has been going on for some time. When I asked the bank manager he said it was due to new money laundering rules. Fortunately, they'll take a copy of your passport from your phone.
  14. It does seem to be very popular though. Fully booked for most of March
  15. Yeah, of course I've done that. There isn't much information on longer-term hotels and google reviews aren't so reliable so I was hoping someday here would have some personal experience they could share. I know some of the forum members have stayed for long periods in hotels in Pattaya. But thanks anyway.
  16. Skype is free. I make maybe 4 or 5 calls to the US a year, just to my bank and brokerage. It's hardly worth it to pay a monthly fee and set up dual sims. I might as well just use WiFi calling. Skype was very convenient for that purpose, however, which is why many of us are looking for a similar alternative.
  17. None of those work for callling 1800 numbers in the US
  18. I know that the Nortin VIP authenticator can be installed on your laptop, which at one time was the only one Fidelity allowed you to use. The others -- Microsoft, Google, etc. -- seem to be focused on the phones. When I talked to Fidelity they said they recommended putting it on the phone. I have heard horror stories though about people who have lost their phone and gotten locked out of all their accounts. Maybe I'm too old for tech of this nature.
  19. I've avoided the Fidelity app because I don't want important stuff on my phone but Fidelity really pushes you in that direction. My main worry is that Google Voice might someday go the way of Skype. If that happened, I guess I would have to bite the bullet and install an authenticator, which I've avoided doing because if you lose your phone your lose access to your accounts. At least that's the way it seems to me.
  20. With your Fidelity account, how do you deal with the 2FA?
  21. I haven't tried making voice calls though I have received them. I have friends who live abroad and they've used Google voice for years with no problem. I, on the other hand had one of my gmail accounts locked out of Google voice permanently for trying to open a GV account from abroad. I had to set up a new Gmail account for the transfer. That worked.
  22. Yes, it's fully functional.
  23. I watched The Apprentice, which is about Donald Trump's relationship with his mentor, Roy Cohn, during the early days of his business career. It was better than I expected. An interesting tidbit about Cohn was that he was a homosexual who blackmailed policiticans and government officials who were also homosexual in order to get favors from them (much like J, Edgar Hoover). He ended up dying of AIDs. There's one funny scene where Trump needs help from Cohn and shows up uninvited at a party that Cohn is throwing at his house, which turns into a gay orgy.
