  1. Everyone knows that Thai buses and vans are death traps, but they keep coming. Thais are just now writing news about this. That's preposterous in and of itself. Several letters were written to the Thai editorial press of the two major English newspapers detailing the unsafe conditions of vans from Mo-Chit to Thammasat University in 2008. Not a thing was ever done. Then there were the accidents with the 16 year old driving and there was some brief skirmishing around. Then, as usual, it was dropped as is the Thai custom. Now, again, the academic speaks out as if no one ever knew or was aware of unsafe buses, vans, and trucks, not to speak of motorcycle havoc and Tuk Tuk mayhem in Thailand. Thailand is a moving death trap.

Ok the manufacture of these vehicles is crap.

But when it comes down to the nitty gritty it is still mostly down to driver error.

Isn't toughened glass standard procedure. There should be a special little hammer positioned next to the window for breaking the glass in an emergency. In fact I have seen on a lot of buses the empty holder where these hammers should be. Guess they got nicked.

  2. It is a fine line. If I saw a parent disciplining their child in a reasonable fashion, I would keep my mouth closed. If I saw a child being severely beaten nearly to the point of torture, I would of course step in to stop it. Purely a judgement call

Hmm very dangerous talk. I did notice the Bleater liked your post though?

  3. Personally i am not bothered at all by the ban, however have to say its rather silly only because those who want to drink-will drink and tourists are not here to pray.

Perhaps a wise choice would be to allow certain tourists zone to remain open or grant special license for tourist place to remain open

I think you will find that hotels can still serve alcohol residents.

  4. Many complaining about this may remember Price Harry of the UK Parading around at a Uni party in Nazi regalia.

I presume he knew what he was doing!

totally agreed on that , unacceptable from Prince Harry ...

    You mean THE Prince Harry?

    SURELY NOT !

Hes one of us ... well educated ( in a 'collage' no less 555) and sensitive to others feelings like all us TV posters. To suggest he saw anything possibly humorous in Hitlers strange posturing , instead of sobbing daily into his handkerchief as The Wiesenthal Centre mandates ( while conveniently ignoring the continuing persecution of minorities by todays Israeli-Jews), would be a travesty indeed....

I do hope none of the 'outraged' here have never fancy dressed as Attila the Hun or Napolean or a cowboy .... all represent genocide for some ethnic group or other after all..

Whoever said that Prince Harry was an intelligent, culturally sensitive bloke?

He must be. His father was a Captain in the Guards?

  6. A dean of a collage in any country does not know who Hitler is or what he did or why this maybe a problem?

A dean of a collage in any country sees Hitler in a student mural and does nothing?

Collage students don't know what the problem is?

Students are doing a Nazi salute in front of all the people attending the graduation?

I try to make my friends understand Thailand but they all think I am exaggerating.

Maybe this mural should be at the airport so when the next group of Euro bankers come into town they will feel really welcome.

Has the IMF seen this yet? Good luck with that! smile.png

I was out shopping with the G/F some time ago, she wanted a dvd for later. I bought a copy of Schindler's List. She was couldn't believe it, when I told her it was a true story.

  7. So much for emergency lighting and basic fire safety.

I doubt the police will want to work in that station any longer as the ghosts from the incinerated victims will be there forever asking why they were left to die horrible painful grisly deaths...........................

So much for emergency lighting and basic fire safety.

Welcome to Thailand stick around and you will see many things different than your home country.

I doubt the police will want to work in that station any longer as the ghosts from the incinerated victims will be there forever asking why they were left to die horrible painful grisly deaths...........

I see you are starting to learn a few things already. Yes the Thais are superstitious.

asking why they were left to die horrible painful grisly deaths.

Maybe there was no way to help them.

Why people are so eager to assume the worst is beyond me. Mind you I am eager to assume the worst of the present government. So far they have not disappointed me.

  8. Bangkok “must see” are Grand Palace and Wat Po with Emerald Buddha. Try a dinner by the riwer either in Chinatown area or, if you are more hi-so, the buffet at Orientel Hotel – or book/take one of the old wood dinner cruise boats with traditional thai dance. Also a canal tour or floating market may be typical BKK. Of course shopping and perhaps a dinner at the top of 300m high Bayoke Tower, with an aotstanding over the city.

There is a temple famous for tigers near the Riwer Kwai bridge (not far from BKK), read more:

    http://tigertemple.org/tigertemple_new/page_article.php?article_ID=153&id=67

You will need to book admission in advance.

Ayuttaya, about 1½ hours north of BKK, is the old capital from 13th to 17th century. Ruins, but impressive and worth a visit, if you are interested in history. You can rent bikes for touring on your own in the huge historical area. Many small guesthouses available, if you wish to stay the night over.

Chiang Mai up north, the old capital of the Lana Kingdom, has hundreds (think about one thousand) of temples. You can get get there by the night sleeper train, quite comfortable if you book a 1st class compartment for two. Costs around 3000 baht. Alternative is to fly – perhabs taking the train up and fly down to Samui, v.v. North of Chian May you will find jungle, trekking and elephants.

Seems you know about relaxed Samui and the nightlife for young perople in Chanweng. You may wish to visit Koh Nangyouan, right north of Koh Tao, for snorkling. There are several day tours, incl. snorling gear, some with comfortable boats and a good lunch buffet. If you are a bit more into “paradise” you may take the old ferry from Maenam Beach to the north-eastern tip of Koh Phangan, a beach called Thong Nai Pan Yai. Fairly cheap bungalows and nothing to do, but enjoy...

Just a few recommandation, enjoy your trip thumbsup.gif

I would agree totally with khunPer.

When you leave Samui a train from Surat Thani, is a very good option you can take a leisurely journey up to Bangkok via Chumphon, Bang Saphan, Prachuap Khiri Khan. Hua Hin Phetchaburi then on into Bangkok. If the weather is favourable, which I think it should be. Very enjoyable.

  9. CMK those are bad numbers and if this trend continues for the rest of the year losses will be huge.

They only sold 796,304 tons.in the first quarter?!

I didn't say they were good but they are accurate. Moodys are not chumps. But numbers are numbers. I like numbers. I don't like the useless exaggerations like "mountains of rotting rice." On a positive note Russia and China are buying and the baht is going down which will help sales.

    Of rotting rice.lol

  10. ... and once again I say, never move to Thailand, or you will die.

When I first moved here I saw this guy get his chest blown open by an exploding gas container. He was bleeding out right there in front of my office. I jumped into lifeguard mode and simultaneously tried to instruct his friend on first aid while also arranging for a ride in a neighbor's truck... I swear on my life, the friend looked me in the eye and waved me off while literally a dozen other people just stood there and did absolutely nothing. No ambulance was called. Nothing was done to stop the bleeding. I eventually organized the truck and a makeshift stretcher just to see the guy check out right there in front of me.

I dont know if it's Buddhism, or a general lack of faith in infrastructure or what. But from that day I knew for sure, gawd forbid I ever find myself bleeding on the street with nothing but Thais around me.

Footnote: I didn't get a single acknowledgement for at least trying to do something .. but at least I now know for certain how I react in an emergency.

The police do the same. Countless times I've seen people laid in the road dying, arms and legs bent backwards with blood spewing and the police stood there directing traffic around them. blink.png

Better than over them. lol Sorry RIP the dead.
