  1. “I have a contract from the Patong Municipality allowing me to build my restaurants here.

I expect the contract is in her head only consisting of a few words and money exchanged with govt officials to get them to look the other way.

I don't know the law in Thailand, but in the UK a contract doesn't necessarily always have to be written on paper for it to be legally binding.

  2. I have a contract from the Patong Municipality allowing me to build my restaurants here

The person who had signed that contract should be arrested, and it should be established how much money was involved for giving that contract.

Exactly. And the army (dictators) should sort that issue out first. Rather than literally going in and ripping their lively hood out from under them. They may be illegal, but corruption has always been the way in Thailand. These people have no rights to benifits. If they do have any form of contract. They should at least have the right to some compensation from whoever issued the contract.

Things such as is happening now could cause much more unrest. Are we heading for a total military state?

For the chap that said they are squatters, that they are not. Squatters have rights.

  3. Thai soapies make me sick when I watch them. The lack of any real/believable story line or the fact that, as mentioned, they all follow the same ridiculous story line makes me wonder if they have infact followed the same formula the American soapie writters have for many years.

Best thing to do when the misisus is watching is tune out!

I usually sit and read, when the girl starts screaming and crying I join in. It usually prompts her to channel hop, for a while at least.

  4. Nothing said about the bus drivers who smoke whilst driving. I see them everyday and have never heard any passenger complaints.

My gf complained on a bus in Bang-Na. She got really dirty looks from conductor, driver (smoking) and passangers.

I find it difficult to complain as I was a smoker.

  5. No surprises , they love posting to face book, they dont care about the content.

I suppose I am quite lucky, my g/f and her friends are into taking photos of their food. When food comes out in a restaurant or sometimes at home out comes the phone, photo and post on fb. Even her friends in the UK do it.

  6. The problem with the area along Charoen Nakhon Road is that its just not easily accessible like most of the other shopping centres are.

Well Smut... I'd argue that there are no easily accessible shopping malls in Bkk via automobile. There is however very likely the chance that a MRT or BTS link will suddenly and quite mysteriously pop up with direct access to the newly proposed waste of space mega project.

Thats fair, although most of the city center ones are readily accessible via either BTS or MRT, especially those along Sukhumvit, and although slow in the traffic it is not difficult to find your way into the others. I find Charoen Rd annoying, having to do U turns etc and u turns being blocked when traffic is heavy etc. I went down to the River Condo a couple of times and getting in and out of there is sometimes a nightmare, especially if you want to go right out of the exit across the traffic.

Speaking of shopping centers, i really cannot get my head around Central Embassy, i just find the whole location/concept difficult to fathom. Difficult to exit, no BTS link. From Ploenchit you have to start running across roads, probably to far for most of the target clientele to walk from Chidlom etc.

Hardly a "long" walk from BTS Ploenchit to Central Embassy. The walkways from that BTS station extend very well.

The traffic flow is always variable, as with all major cities. But the parking is always difficult in the Bangkok malls. Wonder if they will allow plenty of parking space in the design?

I meant it was a fair walk from Chidlom BTS for the types of people who Central is aimed at, especially when they have Central Chidlom store connected to Chidlom bts.

Ploenchit BTS is close but its a big traffic junction, with no sky bridge into the site, meaning the well to do will a) have to use the bts to start with B) have to navigate a busy junction to get there on foot. Both of which i see as potential trouble spots for them.

I would not be surprised to see the centre re-branded in the coming years.

And ever tried getting on BTS after 4.30 in the afternoon.

  7. ts two towers, set to open in 2017, will reach 40- and 70-stories high on 80,000 square meters of land on Charoen Nakhon Road. It will consist of two large malls, a convention hall and a condominium. It could possibly disrupt the Earths orbit around the sun.

Where do they get this dribble? And the towers sky high all over the world do not affect the Orbit of the earth?

What planet are these fools on?

The Planet that revolves around Thailand of course.

Is the project for Central to build the Mall of all malls still going ahead at Bang-Na?

  8. U.S. child support is one of those debts that one can never escape. Child support and student loans are debts that cannot be discharged in bankruptcy. The amount of child support is made on formula that uses (1) percentage of custody (2) gross monthly income. So if you make alot of money, your payments will be more than someone who is broke, and yes the monthly child support can be more than what is actually needed.

What bothers me about the system is that it is the state who is getting a cut of it. Local district attorneys have programs to recover child support. The district attorney's office for the county then gets a cut of whatever is recovered. And compound interest is added to what isn't paid. So while you argue that there's some deadbeat dad out there, keep in mind that what is really going on is that the government is making osure it gets its money.

Yes that is how it works in the UK.

It is the biggest violation to the rights of what they call absent parents.

The CSA was formed purely to add to the government coffers. It was never about children. I was caught up in it. Never paid into it (never assessed) never allowed my children to suffer. As was the intention of their mother and the government. I joined an orgination fighting the CAS, you wouldn't believe the horror stories. More than 40 so called absent parents committed suicide in the first few years.

If anyone is really interested, try googling CSA UK.

  10. destroying it means harming nature in two ways: first you kill the animal just for a small part of it, secondly destroying the part the animal was killed for means a second kill. It should still be used in some way!! education for children, education against killing animals, something like that, even if it is only for the respect of the anaimal that was killed for it. just destroying makes only sense on paper!!

In many ways I agree with you, it seems such a shame that all those wonderful creatures died for nothing.

They could always be mounted on a block and any future poachers captured could be impaled on them.

  11. Is it actually possible to buy a house with two names one being non-Thai (me)?

It doesn't matter about the house. The house can be in you or your G/F's name. What matters is the Canute (Land Deed) and no it can't be in your name. But you can have a 30 year lease put on the land which makes it less sellable.

Registering a 30 year lease against a Chanotte doesn't make it any less saleable as long as the lease holder agrees to the sale.

Or disagrees and the land owner just forges his signature to cancel the lease and promptly sells it on to the bank. As was said - where there's a will there's a way.

    And that does happen

  12. OH NO! Tea money just went from 200 to 300 baht?

More than that now. Tuesday 24 Jun.

Speed trap with camera's deployed sneakily some distance up the road and a large checkpoint and pay station (desk set up) on R21 - Saraburi- Lomsak Road. Fines were starting at 400 THB.

A bit off topic. We were driving up to Udon Thani a few years back, cop on the side of the road waved us to stop, scammed me of 300bt. Then told my gf not to speed for 5km. Yep at 5km speed trap, a bit further they we're waiting.

  13. 2 bikes, 5 people. Way to go Thailand.

Now what is the lesson learned here? What are you going to do so something like this never happens again?

    Exactly.

What is the lesson to be learned?...the lesson is to learn to read properly, there were 3 bikes involved. Way to go KunMatt.

Two boys aged 15 were killed and two further 15 year olds and a 32 year old were injured as two motorbikes collided head-on in a road crash close to the Elephant Farm in East Pattaya on Monday Evening?
